Nikon D7100 Hands-On Review

Nikon D7100 Hands On ReviewThe Nikon D7100 is the younger sibling of the famous Nikon D7000, a star product which was launched in late 2010. On paper, the Nikon D7100 is much more of an upgrade than its numbering scheme may lead you to believe. First of all, the sensor goes to 24 Megapixel (from 16), the auto-focus (AF) system now samples 51 points, and the video recording mode can shoot up to 1080 at 60 FPS (interlaced) or 30FPS progressive (from 1080/24p previously on the D7000). In addition to that, Nikon as managed to make the body a little lighter – what’s not to like? Finally, a much talked about aspect of the Nikon D7100 is the lack of low-pass filter in the sensor – I’ll tell you more about it since it this generates quite a buzz in the forums. (more…)

Canon EOS Rebel T5i Hands-On Review (EOS 700D)

Canon EOS Rebel T5i Hands On Review (EOS 700D)The arrival of the Canon EOS T5i on the DSLR scene didn’t make much waves, and for good reason: this update of the T4i (650D) is so close to its predecessor that you have to dig into the software to find a difference: the EOS T5i can preview the Creative Filters in real-time, which is one of the most underwhelming (although welcome) feature addition to this camera. Yes, since the Txi line of product has usually been a sweet spot for entry-level DSLRs, I thought that it would be worthwhile to take a closer look to see if there is more than meet the eye… (more…)

Canon EOS 6D Hands-On Review

Canon EOS 6D Hands On ReviewSince I’m at Imaging Week in Seoul/Korea this week, I thought that I would spend some hands-on time with the Canon EOS 6D that was announced recently. I use a Canon 50D on a daily basis, so it’s nice to see how far Canon has gone since I bought the 50D back in the days. The Canon EOS 6D is quite different: it’s a full-frame DSLR, which makes it a much more affordable full-frame option when compared to its EOS 5D Mark III cousin. At the same time, it integrates elements from the Canon EOS 60D when it comes to the controls and overall layout, so this makes it a DSLR worthy of attention. (more…)

Pentax K-30 DSLR adds 15 new color options, gets both matte and gloss finishes

Pentax K30 DSLR adds 15 new finishes, gets both matte and gloss

You might recall the weather-sealed delights of Pentax’s K-30, but if you don’t, perhaps a new palette of colors will leave a more permanent impression. The 16.3-megapixel DSLR can now be picked up in 15 new finishes, split between gloss and matte, and includes Bordeaux (that’ll be deep red), White, Orange, Yellow, Green, Silver and Blue colors. However, it’s still not the most customization options Pentax has offered. The K-30 has a long way to go if it wants to best the 100 variants of its mirrorless sibling, the Q10. Each one retails for $800, but to get the full catalog, you’ll have to pass the digital doors of Pentax’s online store.

Tascam unveils DR-60D audio recorder for DSLRs

Tascam has announced its new audio recorder aimed for on-set videographers and filmmakers who utilize DSLRs for video recording. The DR-60D is being touted as a recorder designed specifically for video workers, removing the need to use larger recorders that are meant for music recording. There’s no word yet on release date or pricing, but we have a run down of the recorder’s specifications after the jump.

The DR-60D is a relatively compact device that runs off of four AA batteries and supports SD and SDHC cards, offering 96kHz / 24-bit audio recording and USB file transfer from the 4-track solid-state system to a computer. Audio can be recorded in both BWF and WAV formats using either Auto Rec or Dual Rec mode, depending on the project. The unit is designed to fit beneath a DSLR unit, but can also be implemented into a recording rig.

The DR-60D boasts two quarter-inch XLR Locking Combo Mic/Line inputs (+48V Phantom Power), a standard 3.5mm stereo mic line-in port, camera in/out, line out, and headphone out. There’s a self-timer, file divide, up to CH3-4 monitor selector, +24dBu input, low cut filter, peak limiter, input delay, and MS decode, among other features, all tailored to the needs of both amateurs and pros.

As for manual control, the body itself was designed to avoid introducing unnecessary noise from handling into the audio; this includes the use of its soft buttons and its dials. Tascam hails its user interface system as being easy to use, with intuitive controls and multiple recording modes, including an automatic mode and its popular Safety Track mode.

Sony A99 Bundle Announced, Comes With Free Flash Unit And Vertical GripWe’re sure that many professional or enthusiast photographers out there would love to get their hands on a full frame DSLR camera, such as the Sony A99. While the A99 might be somewhat affordable by itself, getting additional accessories such as an external flash unit and a vertical camera grip with additional batteries might be a luxury some cannot afford. Well the good news is that if you were looking for a full frame DSLR, perhaps Sony’s A99 might be it as Sony US has launched a deal for the A99.

Basically for the price of the A99 (body only), Sony US is giving away a free vertical camera grip and an external flash unit with a total value of $930. As for the camera itself, in case you haven’t been following the prices lately, the Sony A99 will cost you $2,799.99. Granted it’s a hefty price tag, but if you were planning on making the transition into full frame and want to get all the trimmings, this deal might be it. At the moment online retailer Samys is offering the bundle deal, while Amazon’s page has yet to be updated to reflect the new deal. So, any takers?

Cameras With WiFi Connectivity Could Be Hacked And Turned Into Spy CamsOne of the newer features that camera manufacturers have started to introduce to many of their cameras is built-in WiFi. What this means is that it allows photographers to transfer photos from the camera to another device, like a tablet, smartphone or computer, wirelessly, eliminating the need for additional cables. While it sounds like a convenient feature, it has been discovered at the hacker confere, Shmoocon 2013, that this WiFi feature might not be as safe as you think. (more…)

Alleged Canon EOS 7D MK II Test Camera Specs Revealed

Alleged Canon EOS 7D MK II Test Camera Specs RevealedThe Canon EOS 7D MK II is expected to be announced sometime in the future, when exactly remains unknown. However for those looking forward to hearing more about the successor to the EOS 7D, the folks at Northlight have managed to get their hands on what seems like alleged specifications of said camera. Keep in mind that these are alleged specs and might not necessarily be the real thing, so approaching it with a hint of skepticism will probably go a long way preventing yourself from being disappointed.

So what are we looking at here? Well if the specs are right, the EOS 7D MK II will feature a 21MP APS-C sensor, an ISO range from 100-25,000, 10fps shooting, Full HD video capture with manual control, a single CF card slot, 19 AF points, phase detection for liveview and AF tracking, a 100% viewfinder, a 3.2” LCD display, GPS and WiFi connectivity and an alloy body with better weather sealing compared to the EOS 7D. These are somewhat believable specs but like we said, we cannot confirm them at the moment. However for those looking forward to the EOS 7D MK II, what do you guys think?
