Dish announces Hopper with Sling HD DVR, offers offline recordings on iPad

Dish Network has announced the arrival of its second generation HD Whole-home DVR, the Hopper with Sling. With the DVR, subscribers have access to some new features, as well as improvements on existing features, making for an all-around better experience. In addition, the Hopper with Sling will be accompanied by the Transfers app, allowing subscribers to watch recorded content offline via an iPad.

The Hopper with Sling allows users to watch both live and recorded TV via mobile devices and PCs with an Internet connection via Sling at no additional charge, likewise with the DISH Anywhere app, or offline on an iPad with the Transfers app. The DVR brings a bit of Smart TV functionality to subscribers’ TVs with multi-player game apps, as well as what it calls “flinging” media content to smartphones and tablets.

The Transfers app features parental blocks for those with children, and allows subscribers to schedule transfers of entire TV show seasons or single episodes. The transfer process is seamless, and doesn’t require any extra devices on top of the iPad and DVR. The app will be released in the Apple App Store once the Hopper with Sling DVR is released. For now, no information on pricing or availability has been given.

Dish Network’s President and CEO Joseph P. Clayton offered this statement. “Last year, Hopper delivered the DISH TV experience to multiple rooms. This year, we top that and deliver it anywhere. With Hopper, the value equation for pay TV becomes radically different. Customers pay only once for their content and can access it anywhere they choose, in the home, or on the go.”

Dish’s Newest Hopper DVR Has Sling Built In and Can Wirelessly Transfer TV Shows to Your iPad

Dish CEO Dresses Up, Raps and Disses the Networks

Dish CEO Joseph Clayton, a kooky bossman who once brought out a scared kangaroo in the middle of a press conference filled with nerds, nearly topped his stunt last year by dressing up and busting into a full blown rap (a hip hop hippity hop…) and then went on to make fun of the networks who have been battling Dish because of its Auto Hop feature. This guy is the best. More »

Dish Explorer for iPad steers Hopper DVRs, tells TV watchers what’s trending

Dish Explorer for iPad steers Hopper DVRs, goes beyond the TV guide

Dish was quick to take advantage of its Sling Media integration with remote live TV, but it hasn’t put as much of an emphasis on what happens when we’re still sitting comfortably in our living rooms. It’s filling that hole with the launch of its Explorer app for the iPad. Viewers with a Hopper DVR can control their set-top box directly from the tablet, as you’d expect, but they’ll also get a companion to whatever they’re watching, whether it’s live or recorded. Explorer catches the buzz around a show on Facebook and Twitter, including rankings if you’d like to see what shows are the hottest; it also builds in Thuuz sports stats and ratings to identify what’s likely to be the big game for the day, even as it’s happening. The app doesn’t officially reach the App Store until Monday, and there’s no word of an Android port, but we’ll be sure to share our first-hand experiences as soon as possible.

DirecTV Genie whole-home DVR review

DirecTV Genie wholehome DVR review

We’re very happy that 2012 ended up being the year of whole-home DVRs. We reviewed Dish Network’s Hopper earlier this year and now we’ve spent some quality time with DirecTV’s Genie — can’t say we expected the cute names. Capable of serving up to eight rooms in your house (but only four at once), the Genie system works with a variety of setups, including being built into some newer Samsung TVs. Only available as part of DirecTV service, the Genie can be had for free by some new DirecTV customers who are willing to sign a term agreement and select the right package, and available to existing customers as an upgrade for $300 depending on the circumstances. If DirecTV didn’t already have you at five tuners, 1TB and up to eight rooms, then click through for a full rundown on the latest the original direct satellite broadcast TV provider has to offer.

Rogers Anyplace TV Home Edition lets Canadians steer DVRs, watch live TV from iOS

Rogers Anyplace TV Home Edition lets Canadians steer live TV, DVRs from iOS gear

Mobile apps that blend DVR control and live TV are thriving in the US and elsewhere, so you can imagine the frustration Canadians have felt going without an official option from local telecom giants. A new version of Rogers’ Anyplace TV Home Edition app for iOS redresses that problem, if not quite in a radically different way than its US peers. iPad, iPhone and iPod touch owners can now manage DVR recordings on their NextBox hubs, and iPad owners can watch live TV from the same app — but only from 25 cleared channels, and only when they’re at home on a Rogers internet connection. It’s not quite a liberation from the TV status quo, then, and Android users will have to wait for their own fix sometime during the last few weeks of 2012. Still, it’s hard to object to a free bonus for an existing subscription.

Humax’s take on an IP-connected TV box for Comcast passes through the FCC

Humax's take on an IPconnected TV box for Comcast passes through the FCC

Comcast isn’t opening up its set-top boxes (UI and all) in the way we’d like, but it has established a reference spec (RDK) for potential hardware partners to build their own versions of its next generation setup. As reported by Light Reading, Cisco, Humax, Pace, Technicolor and others are working on hardware for a new multiroom setup based on a central gateway (or maybe a Cablevision-style network DVR) that streams video to IP-connected extenders called the XI3. Now Humax’s Xfinity-branded XI3-H has been revealed in an FCC filing spotted by Wireless Goodness. It sports a coax in/out connection for MoCA and TV, HDMI in and out, Ethernet and a USB port for a WiFi adapter. There’s also an SD card slot interestingly, which could potentially be used as local DVR storage for quick pause and rewind without pulling from the main server.

Dish Network’s Hopper gets an off-air digital TV tuner, software update packing new features

Dish Network's Hopper gets an off-air digital TV tuner, software update packing new features

If recording satellite television using one of Dish Network’s Hopper systems left you longing for something a little more terrestrial, there’s good news: the firm just unveiled an off-air digital tuner that’s compatible with its marsupial-themed hardware. For those eager to record broadcasts picked up with an antenna, the OTA dongle is already available for $30 from Dish’s online store. A freshly released software update not only adds support for the hardware, but also brings a raft of new features to the Hopper. With the update, users can now pair Bluetooth audio devices with the DVR, gaze at album art on SiriusXM channels and recover deleted recordings from a recycle bin that saves nixed footage for 48 hours. The box’s “Prime Time Anytime” feature now supports standard definition local channels, and a new “What’s Hot” section clues users into what other folks are watching locally and nationwide. For nitty gritty details, screenshots and impressions of the OTA module, tap the source links below.

Dish Network Wins Against TV Studios Trying to Ban AutoHop

Like many people, I have a serious love-hate relationship with movie and television studios. I love a lot of the content they produce, but they never cease to irritate me when it comes to their heavy-handed approach to trying to block viewers from accessing content the way we want to access it. I think one of the best DVR features I’ve heard of in a long time is Dish Networks’ AutoHop technology.

dish hopper dvr1

This technology allows Dish Network users with compatible DVRs to record prime-time programming on major networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox and automatically skip all the commercials. The users can watch recorded content the day after the original broadcasts without having to sit through any advertisements or having to fast-forward.

As you can imagine that feature made the networks very angry, and Fox sued Dish Network for copyright infringement among other things. Thankfully, Dish Network and TV fans around the country have won this battle for now, with the judge presiding over the case ruling in Dish Networks favor. The judge found no copyright infringement for customers using the feature and ruled that the PrimeTime Anytime feature doesn’t infringe on the studio’s exclusive reproduction rights under federal copyright laws.
