All new Kindle Paperwhite announced, brings e-reading to the next level

kindle-paperwhiteE-book readers, also known as e-Readers in certain quarters, are not exactly the fastest moving tablet-like device in the market at the moment, and neither has it been that way for a long time. In fact, the iPad and a plethora of Android-powered tablets are dominating the market at the moment, and e-book readers occupy just a small percentage of the share. This has not fazed Amazon though, as they have just announced the sixth generation Kindle Paperwhite reader, where it will boast of new display technology with a higher contrast, next generation built-in light, a faster processor, in addition to all-new reading features such as Kindle Page Flip, Goodreads, Kindle FreeTime, Smart Lookup, and Vocabulary Builder among others.

Granted, a dedicated e-book reader like the Kindle Paperwhite is definitely not going to come with the kind of processing muscle that your regular iPad or Android-powered tablet would, but it does perform as a wonderful substitute if you love reading books on the move, and do not want to get weighed down by the many pages. Some other folks love their books to remain in pristine condition all the time, and dog ears are anathema. Well, the new Kindle Paperwhite solves all those issues by delivering an uncompromised reading experience. Being different from tablets, it is a snap to read in bright sunlight, and neither will your eyes tire out in the dark. Boasting of a chassis that weighs a mere 7.3 ounces, it is light enough for you to read with just a single hand, and comes with an amazing 8 weeks of battery life, now how about that?

It is said that the new processor is 25% faster than its predecessor, allowing your books to open faster, while pages turn in a more fluid manner. There is also integration with Goodreads, where it will combine the world’s largest e-reading community alongside the world’s largest community of book lovers. This means you have a pool of more than 20 million other readers to check out what they are reading, to be able to share highlights with one another and rate the books that you have already completed. The asking price for the new Kindle Paperwhite? A mere $119 onwards a pop.

Gain Rewards with Amazon Coins

Yesterday (February 5, 2013) Amazon announced a new loyalty program launching in May. Amazon Coins will enable app purchases with credits/points/’coins’. Makes sense. Afterall, most of us are sucked into some points program – be it credit card miles, grocery store points or what not. But take a look at more of the details of Amazon Coins and see if you think it will be enough to gain loyalty of buyers and programmers.

Amazon Coins will reward millions of coins (what appear to be about $.01 each) to Kindle Fire users. Why Kindle Fire? To promote development and purchases of appstore apps. Amazon made no announcement as to how the “tens of millions of coins” will be rewarded. At a minimum it appears they will be available for straight purchase. But I can’t help but think that Amazon will give some away to help promote interest in apps. Perhaps with digital content purchases? Anyway, Coins will serve as a virtual currency to purchase apps. The objective appears to get app developers focused on adding Fire-compatible content to the app store and pushing them to promote their own apps. Theoretically, if a user has coins stored up they would be more willing to try out something new – giving programmers their incentive. To be eligible, an app must be on their store by April 25. The developer’s announcement details more of the what/who/how from their end. As an avid Amazon customer and Kindle Fire owner I can attest that Fire apps lag far behind their Android brethren  So perhaps this may prompt more interest from the dev community. And as a Fire owner I appreciate the possibility of some free credits coming my way for sticking with their tablet in a world of more advanced units. Only time will tell. So stay tuned to hear how Amazon Coins pans out.

Kindle? Check. Sun? Check

I love taking the Kindle on vacation. Load up your books and boom. You are lost in a world of nonfiction…or fiction if you choose. Kindle battery life is unbelievable too. Yet any bookworm away from home may tend to run low on power. Sure if you only read 30 minutes a day you will get a month. But if you plan on not peeling your eyes away while basking in the vacation sun then you better be prepared.

From the “that make sense” file is the SolarFocus cover for Kindle. Pop your Kindle 4 (latest edition…the one without the keyboard or touchscreen) into the leather case where it is held securely. Built into the cover is a solar panel. So yes, as you sit at the pool your Kindle can recharge. It will take you 3 sunny days to fully recharge. But with the low battery usage of the Kindle I find it hard to believe anyone could run out of juice. Included inside the case is a self-housed LED light for nighttime reading. And it is charged via the solar panel too, preserving your Kindle battery for its own functions. This Solar Lighted Cover can be yours for $69.95 on Amazon.com or £49.90 on Amazon.co.uk and be to you just in time for your winter getaway to the sun.

New Approach to eReading

What prevents most people from getting an e-reader? Seriously, if you read, there are few reasons not to get one – aside from the price perhaps. With most competitive devices going for over $100 a person may rethink before going electronic. Yet a German company took a different approach and looks to shake up the e-reader industry in doing so.

txtr previously launched an online book download service in many countries like the UK and Germany. Via a smartphone app users buy and read a competitive selection at competitive prices. txtr is now embarking on the hardware business, keeping it simple and giving the veterans competition. The txtr beagle will launch at an estimated $13. Yes, you read that correctly. Why so inexpensive? That’s what happens when you go back to basics. Based on information on their beta website, txtr appears to have removed intricate electronics and functions and focus on – to use their slogan – read only. Really their approach seems fairly logical. The device holds just 5 books at a time. Books are acquired via Bluetooth on smartphones or via their existing Android app. It claims to be the smallest (about 6 cu in) and lightest (about 4.5 oz) 5” or 6” e-reader. Design is meant for easy resting in the hand and easy stashing in the bag.  No chargers required for this gadget either as two AAA batteries reportedly give “a year of reading” or 12-15 books depending on your appetite. A smart move in my mind. The beagle will come in 5 colors too. No launch date exists now, but if you want to learn more sign up on their site for information as soon as the download service and the beagle launch in the US. Watch out e-reading industry, this dog looks to make waves.

Gadget Gear for a Cause

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You see a number of fundraisers and campaigns in full swing. Incipio – makers of mobile device accessories – created their own method to raise funds and awareness thanks to our gadgets. Via “Case for a Cure” Incipio donates 20% of each pink accessory sold on their website to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®. With such a worthwhile cause we thought it only appropriate to highlight a couple of the pink products.

Not all of us have gone to backlit reading devices. I love my Kindle 2. But the lack of backlight means the bedside lamp gets a workout if I read at night. But Incipio’s Xenon offers a silicone case that, unlike some I have used, does not feel sticky or tacky. It actually has a polished feel, like the Kindle itself. Built into the case are two xenon reading lights with 3 brightness settings. And if reading during the day simply lock them in on the back of the case. Another great part about the Xenon is the price, just $15.99.

Another product worth considering for the cause is the Stowaway. I’m sure we have all done the “stash a card or room key in the phone case” trick. Smartly enough, Incipio actually put a credit card holder in the back of this iPhone case (4 or 4S). And the great part is it doubles as a stand when viewing in landscape mode.  With a hard exterior and silicone core you know your phone will be safe too. You can pick up a Stowaway for $34.99.

Both items are available in other colors too. But showing your awareness and giving to a cause certainly justifies going pink.

Kobo Arc comes in three storage options

The world of tablets is not really that complicated if you were to break it down in terms of the operating system – there is either Android or iOS, where the BlackBerry PlayBook is negligible, although the release of Microsoft’s Surface tablets later this year might just change the tablet landscape somewhat. It is either an iPad or an Android-powered tablet, where the latter certainly has plenty of options for you to choose from. One of the players would be Kobo, and their latest Kobo Arc 7” tablet certainly looks as though it is shaping up to be an affordable and fun device to carry around.

For starters, this 7” tablet will run on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Not exactly the newest version, but at least it is not that backward, either. Available later this November, you will be able to choose from 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities. Kobo decided to approach the Arc’s design by taking a new and innovative outlook, intending to change the traditional tablet experience from searching within apps to an immersive content platform coupled with its unique interface known as Tapestries. You can now have more choice than ever before in exploring, saving and experiencing the music, movies, eBooks, and webpages that you love.

Wayne White, General Manager of Devices, Kobo, said, “We designed the Kobo Arc to let people focus on the music, eBooks, movies, website and applications they love rather than on the hardware they hold in their hand – though that is amazingly designed as well. We’ve accomplished this by offering consumers more – more storage, more customization, more choice – all in the powerful, attractive and vivid Android 4.0 Kobo Arc.”

Hardware specifications of the Kobo Arc include a 1.5GHz OMAP 4470 dual-core processor, up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge, boasting a 7″ high-definition display with 178 degree viewing angles, 215 pixels/inch and 1280 x 800 resolution with 16-million colors, tipping the scales at 364 grams. Its form factor is also easy to hold in the palm of your hand, where it features front-facing stereo speakers with SRS TruMedia sound, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, a built-in microphone, and 802.11 WiFi connectivity, not to mention Google Play support.

You will be able to pick up the Kobo Arc in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities at while retailing for $199.99, $249.99 and $299.99, respectively. Pre-orders can be placed from this fall onwards, where you can pick it up from stores later this November.

Meet Kindle Paperwhite

In addition to announcing the family of Kindle Fire HD last week, Amazon also announced the arrival of the Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite 3G, the latest Kindle e-reader. The Kindle, and its competition that followed, have revolutionized how many of us read. I admit, when presented with my first Kindle I balked. But in the course of business travel or downtime at the beach I saw the light. Despite the onslaught of tablets with pretty color and backlight, an e-reader will continue to be a necessity for some of us. Which is why the Paperwhite units are big news.

Contrast, reading in the dark and references are what Amazon brings to the table this time. The Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite 3G add 62% more pixels and increases contrast 25%. Meaning whiter whites and blacker blacks – more true to the paper reading experience.  These newbies also have a built in front light for night time reading – a negative on the previous Kindle versions that I heard from many owners. You can control the level of brightness too. Some of the more fun additions to the unit include an X-ray feature that points you to additional mentions of characters or ideas in your book so you can explore more. And, Kindle Paperwhite will also help you track your reading via Time to Read. The concept is that your Kindle will know the pace of your reading and inform you how long it will take to finish the chapter or book. Perfect for those of us that lose sleep by not setting the book down.

One of the best benefits is the price. Staying competitive, the Kindle Paperwhite starts at $119 and begins shipping the week of October 8th with the 3G version, listed at $179, shipping the following week. Other features of previous generation units continue including memory for over 1,100 books, 2 month battery life (at 30 minutes a day) and easily adjustable fonts. So for you die hard Kindle users get ready, and if have thought about an e-reader user, these are units are a good place to start.
