Atari E.T. Landfill Dig Is Finally Happening This Month

So what is the real story with the fate of millions of unsold E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and Pac-Man video games made for the Atari 2600? They were a big time flop and legend says that tons of unsold copies were dumped into a New Mexico landfill never to be seen again. But no one seems to know if this is fact or just urban legend.

Fuel Entertainment has been trying to get permission to dig up the games for several months, and they finally have a green light. Fuel has acquired the exclusive rights to excavate the landfill, and they took the opportunity to Xbox Entertainment Studios. So now Microsoft is including the dig in a documentary series. This may finally solve an age-old nerd mystery.

They will excavate the burial site on April 26, 2014, and the public is invited to attend. Director Zak Penn will be recording the dig, and people involved with the creation of the E.T. game will even be there. Maybe they can ask them why it sucked so bad. Will they find a massive pit full of games? If they do, how many will they sell as souvenirs? Stay tuned.

E.T. LEGO Set Brings Back the 80s

I think one of the coolest things LEGO has ever done was to launch the LEGO Cuusoo website. This is the place where you can go to vote on DIY LEGO builds that could eventually become kits you can actually go to the store and purchase. Last time we talked about this was when the Goonies LEGO set turned up on the website.

This time out it’s another 80s childhood favorite of mine with an E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial LEGO kit complete with flying bicycle and little brown alien.

The guy behind the LEGO kit says it would have about 575 pieces, including the medical van, Elliott’s house, hooded scientists, Gertie, Michael, and a pack of Reese’s Pieces. There’s even E.T.’s Speak and Spell and Elliott’s bicycle, complete with a basket for E.T. to take flight in.

The kit is up on the Cuusso site right now if you’d like to vote for it. If it happens to make it through to the next round, we might be able to buy one down at the local Walmart someday.

Atari’s E.T. Landfill to Be Exhumed

You’ve heard the stories about Atari suffering such poor sales with the E.T. game for the Atari 2600 that they were forced to dump millions of copies into a landfill somewhere. Is it true? There seems to be some debate over this. Is it an urban myth, or not? Now a documentary film crew wants to settle it once and for all.

ET

They’ve been given permission by the Alamogordo, New Mexico city council to excavate the landfill believed to be E.T.’s final resting place. No one seems to know for sure if this tale is even accurate, however, both The New York Times and the local paper The Alamogordo Daily ran stories about Atari dumping back in 1983 when it allegedly happened. The article in The New York Times claims that 14 truckloads of games went in along with other Atari hardware. Ars Technica says that number varies anywhere from nine to twenty depending on the source.

The crew will excavate the site within the next six months. Then we will find out how many E.T. cartridges are in there, if any, and what other treasures they dumped.

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Celebrates its 30th, Makes Millions Feel Really Old

If you grew up in the 80s, you saw E.T. at least a few times – it was practically required of any child of the era. Depending on how old you were, you may have even had some of the tie-in toys, including the bike with the plastic alien sitting in the milk carton up front. Now, E.T. is celebrating its 30th anniversary (if you can believe it) and will be coming to Blu-ray for the first time on October 9th.

et 30th anniversary blu ray

The special edition Blu-ray will include the complete 1982 theatrical movie and is a combo pack with the Blu-ray, DVD, digital copy, and Ultraviolet copy of the film. The movie has been digitally remastered for Blu-ray and supports 7.1-surround sound. Special features of the movie will include The E.T. Journals with never before seen behind-the-scenes footage.

Other extra features will include a cast reunion and interviews with Steven Spielberg. One of the things I’ve always wanted to see are the scenes that were cut from the film with Harrison Ford. I’ll certainly be buying the movie so I can watch with my kids, as this is one of my favorite movies of all time. You can pre-order the disc set over at Amazon now for just $17.96(USD) – that’s nearly half off the $34.98 list price.

ET The ExtraTerrestrial Bluray release date set for October 9th

Universal has finally revealed a release date for Steven Spielberg’s classic E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial on Blu-ray, which will hit shelves October 9th. In line with the box art and trailer we saw previously this Anniversary Edition Combo pack will include Ultraviolet, a DVD and Digital Copy of the flick, as well as a slew of extras including a new interview with Spielberg, behind the scenes journals, and deleted scenes from the 2002 release of the film. Curiously there’s no mention of the Spaceship Limited Edition copy that Blu-ray.com notes recently popped up on Amazon, check out a video of the case for that $139.98 package after the break as well as a standard Blu-ray movie trailer and press release. Those willing to settle for a more conventional form of packaging can pre-order on Amazon for $23.99.
