SimCity Continues To Experience Server Issues; Maxis Comments On Situation

This week was supposed to be a big one for PC gamers as EA’s long-awaited SimCity released, with many members of the media praising the game as it currently stands at an 82 out of 100 on Metacritic. That praise turned into many PC gamers going out and buying the game, which seems like something EA wasn’t exactly expecting as since it’s release, the game has been met with nothing but negativity to both gamers and the media.

The issue EA is having with SimCity is due to the game’s always-on DRM that requires players to always be connected to the Internet when they have the itch to manage their virtual city. It seems way more copies were sold than EA originally anticipated, which is resulting in the company’s servers not working as they would hope they would. (more…)

Dead Space 3 Poor Sales Leads To Dead Space 4 Cancellation [Rumor] [UPDATED]

Dead Space 3 Poor Sales Leads To Dead Space 4 Cancellation [Rumor] [UPDATED]

EA’s Dead Space 3 was just released a few weeks ago to the delight of horror-game fans as the new title removed the strange multiplayer modes found in Dead Space 2, replacing it with a co-op mode. As of this writing, the game is currently rated between 75 – 80 on Metacritic, which means it should be considered a good game. Unfortunately, EA is reportedly killing the franchise today.

According to a source familiar with Dead Space 4 speaking to VideoGamer.com, the development for the game was stopped by EA due to poor sales of Dead Space 3. The game was already in pre-production at Visceral Games and Visceral Montreal, the latter was reportedly closed due to a company restructuring.

At this point, this is purely hearsay as no official word has come from EA announcing either the retirement of the Dead Space series or the shuttering of Visceral Montreal. Considering Dead Space 3 teased a sequel in its post-game credits sequence, we’d find it hard to believe the company would go through the trouble of teasing fans in order to cancel its follow-up game weeks after its release.

[Update: EA has responded to today’s rumor with the following statement: “While we have not announced sales for Dead Space 3, we are proud of the game and the franchise remains an important IP to EA.”]

The Sims 3 University Life expansion pack now available

If you’re a fan of EA’s game The Sims 3, a new expansion pack for the game has launched this week. The expansion pack is called The Sims 3 University Life and is available to download for Windows and Mac gamers now. If you buy the Origin download version of the upgrade pack you’ll get some exclusive items, but it is available as a physical retail game as well.

The expansion pack allows players to go to college and build new skills, engage in activities, and experiment with objects specific to their major in college. The expansion pack brings new venues, a campus quad, a lecture hall, and new housing options including dorms, fraternities, sororities, and apartments. Players will be able to join one of three social groups at college including jocks, rebels, and nerds.

EA says that building influence with the social groups can lead to advantages in the game such as earning dream jobs. The update brings a new smartphone to game characters allowing users to guide and track their influence among the social groups. Users can use that virtual smartphone to blog, take photos, text, and video stream.

Going to virtual college also allows players of The Sims to get ahead after graduation. Players who complete one of the six majors at the University will gain an additional trait slot, advanced entry to their chosen careers, and will perform better at work. The expansion pack also allows players to attend protests, parties, play juice pong, toss a Frisbee, and more. Buying the download version also gets players the School Spirit Pack that includes a Campus Cruiser vehicle, special hairstyle, and two new face paints. The expansion pack is available right now for $39.99.

Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC Highlighted In New Trailer

EA announced it was delivering two additional pieces of DLC to Mass Effect 3, the first of which would be a free DLC for the game’s multiplayer mode. Mass Effect 3: Reckoning released last week, and tomorrow, Mass Effect 3: Citadel will be released as “one final, sentimental journey with Commander Shepard and their squad.”

To help promote the all-new single-player campaign, EA released a trailer for the Citadel DLC, which takes place sometime in the middle of the original campaign which follows events all the way until the final mission.  Shepard will also be able to interact with team members from previous Mass Effect games, one of which is Mass Effect fan-favorite, Urdnot Wrex.

Mass Effect 3 was released nearly a year ago and it’s impressive how much BioWare is still dedicated to the game by releasing this kind of downloadable content. We have yet to play through Citadel, but it seems like it’s shaping up to be a love letter from BioWare to its fans as it’ll bring a number of previous Mass Effect characters together for a set of final missions.

Activision is pulling away from licensed games

Activision has announced that they will be moving away from the licensed games, meaning there will be fewer games from the James Bond, Transformers, Men in Black, and Spider-Man series. Rumor has it that James Bond will be seeing its end really soon. Activision is following the same move that Electronics Arts made back in 2008. EA Games president, Frank Gibeau, said at the time that “the days of licensed-based, 75-rated games copies are dead like the dinosaur.”

Activision is pulling away from licensed games

Along with its move to back away from licensed games, Activision will also be laying off 30 people from its company. That’s about 0.5% of the company, and those that are being let go will be offered “outplacement counseling services” to help them find a new job. Activision made it clear though that the cuts will barely affect Treyarch. The company says that there will be “minimal reduction in staff to better align our development talent against the needs of DLC development.”

Like EA Games, Activision feels that the licensed-games industry isn’t bringing in enough revenue to make the projects worth it. Due to the high-costs of making the movie-based games, and the decreasing demand for them, the games started becoming more trouble than they were worth. Activision will still be releasing a few licensed-based games this year, including games based on The Walking Dead, Deadpool, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I can see why companies are beginning to stray way from licensed games. The licensed games as of late aren’t as amazing as games from the older generation (does anyone remember Goldeneye 007?). Even 007 Legends, which was highly anticipated, turned out to be a let down, which is why the James Bond series might be the first of the licensed games to get the axe.

Gears of War creator promises future with “true horror games”

Those who are fans of true horror games may like where this is going. It has been said that more “true” horror games will come when we finally make the move from disc to digital. The comments come by way of Cliff Bleszinski, who many will recognize from not only being a creative director with Epic Games, but also one of the people behind the Gears of War franchise. The interesting part here, the comment from Bleszinski came at the end of some rather normal Dead Space 3 talk.

DS3_5-580x326

Basically, he has stated that when “we’re fully digital we’ll see more true horror games coming back.” The lead in to this comment deals with the current set-up and how the true horror games not ideal in the high-priced disc based market that we are seeing today. Bleszinski has said the true horror games come in better where they are played for a few days and then traded in, something that he believes EA is well aware of. Aside from giving some hope for true horror fans as we move forward, there was also some interesting comments on the topic of Dead Space 3.

He has said that while the game is “still quite a bit of fun,” he was still having a hard time getting his head wrapped around the weapon crafting and upgrading system. Noting that he could have used a bit more hand holding when it came to generating and crafting circuits. And in what seems like an effort to be fair, he went on to say that “overall game pacing is something that’s really hard to get right.” Other comments included how parts feel like Lost Planet and that there are a lack of memorable locations.

Putting the game play specifics aside, he went on to say that “this franchise feels like it’s starting as a solo experience, a solitary and confined horror game, and now it’s evolving into much more than that.” Bleszinski has said that you can either fight this or embrace it. You can likely guess where he is going — with the embracing. This brings us back to the topic of true horror games coming back as we move to digital, something we hope to see happening as we move forward.

SimCity hosting another closed beta on February 16

EA and Maxis are gearing up for another closed beta for their upcoming SimCity reboot. The companies hosted the first closed beta late last month, and now they’re going for a second round. The beta will begin at 9 am ET on Saturday, February 16 and will run until 9 am ET on Sunday, February 17. Sign-ups for this second beta close on February 11, so be sure to get your name in ASAP.

Screen-Shot-2012-10-04-at-2.51.35-PM-580x3181

This second beta will feature an “enhanced version” of the one-hour slice of gameplay that was previously featured in the first beta, although we’re not sure what “enhanced” features we’ll be seeing this time around. However, you can bet that gamers will be seeing a bit more this time around, as opposed to what they saw last month.

Furthermore, Maxis also unveiled a new trailer showing off the Limited Edition version of SimCity, and if you pre-order it, you’ll get the Heroes and Villains expansion pack for free. The expansion pack, which is only compatible with the Limited Edition version of the game, allows you to add organized crime and superheroes to your city, so who knows, maybe you’ll create the next Gotham City?

SimCity will officially be released for Windows in North America on March 5 and in Europe on March 7. A Mac version will also be coming to stores as well, but it won’t hit shelves until the spring. Cross-platform play will be supported with the game, so you’ll be able to play against your friends using different platforms.

EA’s Origin gaming distribution service arrives on Mac

Macs weren’t very well known for being gaming machines just a few years ago, but things have changed drastically. More and more developers are bringing their games to OS X, and Valve’s Steam gaming service has been available for Mac for quite some time now. This time around, EA’s own Origin service is ready for Mac gamers.

ea-origin

Origin for Mac was initially announced way back in August 2011, and just went into alpha testing last month, but the platform is finally releasing to the public in all its glory. Origin is almost identical to Valve’s Steam service, in which it allows gamers to buy and download games and demos, as well as chat with friends.

And, just like Steam’s own cross-platform abilities, select EA titles will also be available to play across both Mac and Windows machines, meaning that gamers using both Windows and Mac can purchase a game once and download it for both systems. The game obviously has to be compatible with both platforms, but if so, gamers can play the game on a Windows machine and continue where they left off on a Mac.

EA doesn’t say exactly how many titles in Origin are compatible with Mac, but they mention popular games like Dragon Age 2, Batman: Arkham City, LEGO Harry Potter, and The Sims 3. EA also recommends that gamers be running OS X 10.6.8 or newer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better in order to get a maximum experience with the service.

Dead Space 3 now available, DLC coming in March

The time has come, folks. The latest installment in the Dead Space series has arrived. Dead Space 3 is now available for purchase at retail stores in North America, as well as on EA’s Origin gaming service. Plus, Electronic Arts announced that DLC is coming for the game next month for $10 to prove that there’s even more to come after the initial release.

DS3_5-580x326

The new game sports a ton of new features, including an innovative drop-in/drop-out feature, as well as an all-new weapon crafting system. The game takes players on a “thrilling ride through the terrors that lie hidden in deep space and the unforgiving ice planet of Tau Volantis.” It sounds like fun, but we hope you’re ready for the challenge that lies ahead.

The DLC pack, called Awakened, will be available in March. There’s no specific date set yet, but you’ll be able to pick it up for $10 through various channels. In the DLC, players will experience the series’ “darkest chapters as the Necromorph battles become even more gruesome and terrifying than ever before.”

The action-horror sequel looks like it’s quite the thrill from what we’re seeing. Vice president and general manager of Visceral Games Steve Papoutsis says that “gamers will experience some of the most disturbing content they have ever seen in a Dead Space game — they are going to love it.” We’d say that’s a pretty good assumption, Steve.

Origin for Mac enters open Alpha, testers gifted with free copy of Bookworm

Origin for Mac enters open Alpha, testers gifted with free copy of Bookworm

Is your MacBook Pro pulling double duty as a gaming machine? EA wants your attention — it’s launching the Mac Alpha of Origin, its digital distribution service. EA is hoping to have the service ready by March, when it will release SimCity for PC and Mac, successively. For now, though, the client is limited — barring testers from visiting the Origin store, and instead inviting them to launch Bookworm from the client, a puzzle game that’s free for users who install the Alpha. The company promises a more complete catalog of EA and partner games when the client officially launches, but didn’t drop any specific titles. The service still has some catching up to do, compared to its closest competitor — but better late than never, right?
