Medal of Honor Warfighter multiple player beta launches in early October

If you’re a fan of PC shooters or the Medal of Honor franchise, you probably already heard of the coming entry for the franchise called Warfighter. EA has announced that it will offer player’s entry to the open multiple player beta world of Warfighter in early October. The multiple player shooter allows players to choose from some of the most elite soldiers in the world.

Available fighting units hail from 10 different nations and gamers can choose from 12 different Tier 1 units, including the British SAS, German KSK, Russians Spetznaz Alpha Group, Korean UDT, and the U.S. Navy Seal. The game is powered by the Frostbite 2 game engine. EA says that Medal of Honor Warfighter is the only shooter that lets players choose from the best fighting units available in the world, then battle it out in a multiple player environment.

Gamers who participate in the beta will also be able to unlock a music video from Linkin Park called Castle of Glass. EA promises to release the video five days after the beta launches. However, gamers will be of the unlock video earlier if the beta download reaches 3 million units.

The music video will feature a mix of live-action footage edited with game play recordings taken from Warfighter. Gamers who participate in the beta will also get 60 minutes of Double XP when the full game launches. EA says that Warfighter was written by actual US Tier 1 Operators while they were deployed overseas, and the game will be the most authentic military shooter of the year.

Vizio All-in-One review (24-inch): a TV maker tries its hand at desktops

Vizio AllinOne review 24inch a TV maker tries its hand at desktops

We see lots of computers announced every year: many of them are forgettable, and we don’t even have the manpower here at Engadget to review them all. You might wonder, then, why we’ve been a little fixated on Vizio’s. Well, for starters, up until a few months ago the company didn’t even make PCs, and now it’s selling five. Secondly, they actually look pretty good, especially for an outfit that’s best known for its value-priced TVs.

We’ve already had a chance to take its 14-inch Thin + Light laptop for a spin, and came to the conclusion that although it had a flaky trackpad and poor battery life, it represented a good start for a company that hadn’t previously made a computer. Now we’re taking a look at one of the company’s all-in-one desktops — the 24-inch version, to be exact. At $800 and up, it, too, is attractively priced, with an eye-catching metal design, external subwoofer and a crapware-free Windows install. But is it as good as it looks? Let’s find out.

Madden NFL 13 Sold over 1.6 Million Copies Its First Week

EA has offered up some impressive statistics from the first week of availability for its new Madden NFL 13 video game. I think we all expected this video game to do very well – after all, it’s the most popular sports franchise in all of video gamedom.

madden 13

According to EA, sell through for the game was up 8% year-over-year on HD platforms with more than 1.65 million units sold in its first week. EA says that this is the best ever start for the franchise on this console generation. The first week following the launch saw more than 24 million online games played equating to 47,000 NFL regular seasons.

It looks like a lot gamers spent their Labor Day playing Madden with over 3000 games per minute started on average on Labor Day alone. EA also notes that there are more than 1.4 million fans connected online during the week and there were more than 702,000 unique visitors to the enhanced Madden Ultimate Team mode.

Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will not ship with single-player mode

As some of you gamers are probably aware by now, games like StarCraft and StarCraft 2 are extremely competitive and there have been events centered around them, along with television channels dedicated to seeing gamers compete live. This is why it did not come as a surprise to learn that according to EA, Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will be launched with “co-operative and competitive” skirmishes which will be served as the game’s core. However it also seems that this will come at the expense of single player mode. This is kind of a bummer for gamers who might not be so proficient at RTS games but want to play through the story instead, but EA did state that a story mode could be added later but did not mention as to how they will go about doing that. In any case as some of you guys have recalled, Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will be going free-to-play and is expected to be released in 2013.

Command & Conquer Goes Free-to-Play

EA has announced something exciting that fans of the Command & Conquer franchise are sure to be happy about. The announcement came at Gamescom in Germany this week. It turns out that the previously announced Command & Conquer: Generals 2 has been transformed into a free-to-play video game, and will run on the Frostbite 2 engine, which powers the graphics in Battlefield 3.

Of course as is the case with most free-to-play games, you can bet that if you want to advance, you’ll need to spend some money. Buying upgrades is how these free-to-play titles make their money. The game will allow players to play an all-out war and take control of multiple factions, compete for resources, and build up bases of operation.

Players will be able to command massive batteries of tanks, soldiers, and aircraft during battle. The game promises to offer fully destructible environments, highly detailed units, dynamic physics, and exciting visual effects. The free game will be offered for PC only sometime in 2013, and you can register for the Beta here.

Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will be going the free-to-play route

Back in December of 2011, EA officially announced Command & Conquer: Generals 2 that will be seeing a release in 2013. The upcoming game will be powered by DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine and the good news (or bad news depending on how you look at it) is that EA has announced that the game will be adopting the free-to-play model. EA Sports shows off FIFA Soccer 13 and Madden NFL 13 for Wii U

I’ll admit I’m not very interested in the thought of the Nintendo Wii U. I blame the original Wii for that because I actually waited in line to buy one of those consoles only to find it very boring after a few months of use when the novelty of motion controls wore off. The Wii now sits unused in the entertainment center while the PS3 and Xbox 360 get hours of use each month (ok each day).

I’m also not a big fan of sports games. I prefer to play video games based on things I can’t do in real life, like run from the cops or frag noobs. EA Sports has shown off FIFA Soccer 13 and Madden NFL 13 for the Wii U and the games look very interesting. As you can see in the image here, EA is showing off how exactly the games will work with that fancy LCD equipped controller the Wii U boasts.

The portion of the game on the Wii U controller reminds me a lot of the coach’s clipboard while you watch the actual soccer action on the screen. While there’s no image for Madden 13, I will assume that the LCD screen on the controller will be used in much the same way. I can definitely see fans of sports video games opting for Madden 13 on the Wii U to get that secondary LCD screen.

EA Sports says that on FIFA 13, the player can use the GamePad touchscreen in the ball on set pieces in penalty kicks. In Madden 13, the touchscreen allows players to streamline play calling, make pre-snap adjustments, and manage team personnel. Would these touchscreen features make you more likely to buy sports games on the Wii U rather than another game console?

EA announces The Sims 3 Seasons expansion pack

One of the most popular video game franchises that EA owns is The Sims. The Sims is a game franchise that lets the player control virtual people as they conduct their virtual lives. The goal is to meet all of your game characters needs while amassing lots of virtual stuff. EA has announced a new expansion pack for The Sims 3 this week called The Sims 3 Seasons.

You probably gathered from the name of the expansion pack exactly what it’s going to bring to the latest video game in the franchise. The expansion pack is set to land in time for the holiday shopping season with a launch date sometime in November. The expansion will be available for both PC and Mac versions of the game and brings with it all sorts of seasonal settings and activities for players to enjoy.

EA says that for the first time in The Sims franchise, players will be able to take their Sims on swim the ocean, and explore previously unavailable parts of the virtual world. Players will also be able to venture into wintry areas of the map. The expansion pack will cover all the seasons and will have all sorts of things such as seasonal festivals and activities.

One interesting part is that the Sims will be able to build skills while doing activities such as scoring a goal during a soccer shootout or catching air on the half pipe during some winter snowboarding. Other activities that the expansion pack will bring to the game include things like jumping off a diving board, setting off fireworks on the Fourth of July, carving jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween, and all sorts of other activities. The expansion pack also adds new food items, fashions, and decor items to enhance each season. The expansion pack is up for pre-order right now, and players who pre-order will get a limited-edition Ice Lounge community lot that is available in all seasons.

Star Wars: The Old Republic adds free-to-play option

Looks as though our rumors from last week were true, EA has decided add a free-to-play option for its popular MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. This fall, they will add an option that will not require a $14.99 monthly fee. Starting August, they will cut the price by $14.95 which will also come with a free month of subscription.

Crysis 3 interactive singleplayer demo video released

After having its screenshots of the game leaked earlier this week, we’ve now got more Crysis 3 for you gamers out there. EA and Crytek have just released an almost 19-minute long demo video showing off what the single player component of Crysis 3 is going to be like. Users choose whether they want to see the action carried out in stealth mode or armor mode. So for those of you who prefer to go in guns blazing can play the game differently to those who’d rather sneak around and avoid attention. As usual, the graphics are nothing short of impressive even though the video is made from pre-alpha footage of the game. We’ve embedded the video/demo above for your convenience. Check it out and let us know what you think.
