EA pulling Rock Band for iOS from iTunes App Store at the end of the month

Back in May, gamers loading up EA’s Rock Band for iOS were greeted with a statement saying that the game would “expire” by the end of the month. EA later claimed that the message was sent in error, but little did we know that it was only prediction of things to come. We’re not sure if the message was generated in anticipation of this or if this is merely coincidence, but EA has now officially announced that Rock Band for iOS will no longer be available for purchase on the 31st of July, along with downloads of purchased songs. However the game and all of the songs attached to the game will still be able to play locally.

What this means is that if you delete Rock Band for iOS on your phone, don’t expect to be able to get it back by redownloading it, unless of course you back it up to iCloud. According to a statement released on their website, EA claims that this is due to the licensing agreement with Harmonix which is ending, and by the looks of it, there are no plans to renew it either. More information along with some FAQs can be found at EA’s website.

Dead Space 3 will have co-op mode

Dead Space 3We all know that Dead Space has been very well-received due to its spine-tingling fear factor but apparently for the same reason it’s not doing well enough with most of the mainstream gaming audience – at least according to what EA discovered with its research. It seems that people have been asking for a way to play the game with friends because it was too scary and it looks like EA is going to deliver with Dead Space 3. EA claims that Dead Space 3 is “no less scary” and “true to its roots” – so you can expect it to be just as terrifying as the previous two games, but now you have the option of playing it with a friend to share some of the tension.

EA hopes that Dead Space 3 will turn the Dead Space franchise into one of its biggest sellers – by making the upcoming game more accessible to a wider audience, I guess it will help it reach the goal. What do you think of co-op in Dead Space 3? Will it make you more likely to check out the game if you haven’t played the previous two before?

EA says next-gen consoles will be released “probably starting next year”

I am not quite sure why there even needs to be a division between the worlds of PC and console gaming – can’t both of them co-exist together in peace? After all, it is not to say that the emergence of the PC as a gaming platform has shifted all developers’ attention to that particular machine that consoles are neglected. I would say that PC and consoles complement each other instead of being competitive, but that is another story for a different day. What about Electronic Arts (EA for short), one of the biggest publishers of video games, has to say about the situation? According to EA CEO John Riccitiello, he “A major catalyst going forward, and the most important catalyst going forward is visibility on next-generation console, because that NPD data – that minus 10-25% that you’ve been seeing – that can and should be reversed out and some point, probably starting next year.”

To put it in plain English, Riccitiello has hopes that NPD will be tracking physical next-generation console sales in the US from next year onwards. If that is the case, then only the Wii U would be in the equation at this point in time, since there has been nothing but just anticipation of a new Microsoft and Sony console announcement next year, although nothing has been leaked or confirmed in concrete to date.

Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances hits 1 million players

Tiberium AlliancesDespite being released only a couple of months ago, it looks like EA’s latest outing with the Command & Conquer franchise is proving to be a hit. The company announced that Tiberium Alliances has reached over one million users, and to celebrate the milestone, it is giving away a free starter pack to anybody who wants to play the game. The Free to Play model has no doubt influenced a lot of people to check out the game, but it also shows that the Command & Conquer brand name is still pretty valuable.

For those of you not in the know, Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances is a browser-based strategy game that puts players in control of managing resources, constructing buildings and units and waging war against each other in a post-apocalyptic battlefield. I have yet to give this game a shot, but those of you who are interested, be sure to enter: HMKV-VWGN-8GEH-6BTZ on the game’s official website to redeem some free Tiberium, Power, Credits and Crystals.

Peter Moore to replace John Riccitiello as EA CEO?

Are you in the mood for a whopper of a rumor? Let’s hope, because we’ve got one here for you: anonymous sources tell Game Front that Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello is about to be let go, and that current EA Sports boss Peter Moore will step in to take his place. It goes without saying that you should probably take this with a grain of salt (or five), but if this is true, it could mean huge things for Electronic Arts, which has been experiencing some stock price woes recently.

According to Game Front’s sources, Riccitiello was asked to step down from his position at Electronic Arts after the earnings call that took place on June 30. Apparently, the departure of Riccitiello and subsequent promotion of Moore is “not set in stone” yet, as EA’s board of directors still needs to vote on the change. However, tensions are rising at the Electronic Arts offices as the company’s stock price continues to fall.

John Riccitiello has overseen EA since his return to the company in 2007. It was under him that EA-published games began requiring online passes, and he was in charge when the EA Store was relaunched as Origin last year. Riccitiello is no stranger to controversy, as Electronic Arts was named The Consumerist’s Worst Company in America earlier this year.

The rumor comes just a day after Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter stated that Riccitiello had expressed concerns over being fired from the company. Pachter later followed-up by saying that though he was quoted accurately, he was merely kidding around. Perhaps he wasn’t so far off the mark after all?

SimCity Social kicks off on Facebook

Fans of social games on Facebook have a new game to choose from with EA announcing that SimCity Social has officially launched on the social network. SimCity Social is a collaboration between Maxis and PlayFish that is published by EA. The companies promise SimCity Social will have the hallmark features that fans of SimCity have loved for decades.

Those well-known and loved features of SimCity are also combined with social interaction with social city building. EA says that there are no linear paths to follow in the game. The cities evolve as a direct result of player driven choices allowing creative freedom. Players act as mayor of the virtual cities and deal with unforeseen issues like fires, crime, and pollution.

Social interactions do involve visiting a friend’s city, but there is more to the game than that. Players can choose to build friendly relationships with other cities or developed a rivalry using the dynamic friend and foe system. The game offers several options to grow cities and players are forced to react to unexpected events that change the destiny of the city and relationships between other cities. The game is available to play right now.

EA to be a 100%-digital company

EA logoAs the imminent death of physical media draws closer each day, companies are starting to realize this and make the necessary changes to their media distribution. Games publisher, EA has recently announced that EA will soon be a 100%-digital company. According to EA’s president, Frank Gibeau, the digital market is the fastest growing area for the company (it is currently making the company $1.2 billion in revenues annually).

We’ve heard rumors of the next generation PlayStation and Xbox being disc-free consoles, and nowadays a lot of gamers are already downloading games on their computers instead of buying them from traditional retailers – so a digital-only EA seems plausible. It’s only going to be a question of when it’s going to happen. I for one am in favor of eschewing traditional media for digital downloads (do we really need more boxes to clutter up our shelves?) and look forward to a digital-only future. What do you think?

Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut Lands

If you’re an Xbox 360 gamer that has a copy of Mass Effect 3, there’s new download content now available. The free download of Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut went live today and weighs in at a hefty 1.85 GB in size.

me 3 end

The content is the expanded ending for ME3 with additional scenes and an extended epilogue. That extended epilogue reveals the impact of Shepard’s choices on the future of the galaxy. That’s all EA and BioWare says about the content, and you’ll have to play it for yourself to find out how it ends.

I still can’t believe all the ruckus the ending of this video game caused. It’s not as if Shepard hasn’t come back from the dead before.
