Original Xbox Launch Collection Hits eBay

If you can believe it, it’s been over 11 years since the original Xbox game console launched. It’s difficult to imagine a time when Microsoft didn’t have one of the top gaming consoles on the market, but prior to 2001, it was all Sony, Sega and Nintendo. Now, if you’ve got a whole lot of cash kicking around, you can own a piece of gaming  history, with this amazing collection of goodies from the original Xbox launch in November 2001.

Having been employed at Microsoft from 1997 to 2006 as part of the Xbox launch team, Howard Philips (who also worked at Nintendo during its heyday) has decided to sell off his Xbox launch collection over on eBay.

The collection includes one of the translucent green Xbox Launch Team consoles and a pair of matching green controllers. Just 60 of these were ever made, so they’re very rare. In addition, there’s an awesome, possibly one-of-a-kind sculpture of the original “X” prototype console, made out of machined and polished metal with a light-up Xbox logo. It measures about 18″x18″x18″ and weighs in at a whopping 25 pounds – which, when you think about it – doesn’t sound much heavier than the production Xbox console.

There’s also some cool internal Microsoft collectibles in the auction, including a commemorative launch plaque, and the first ever official Xbox Certification Submission Disc – the orinal master disc of NHL Hitz – the very first Xbox game to go into certification, back in July 2001.

If you’re lucky (or rich) enough to purchase this collection, you’ll also get a full set of Xbox collectors cards from E3 2001, an original, unused Xbox Live Subscription card from the launch of the service, an original Xbox trade show badge, baseball cap and windbreaker, as well as a bunch of other Xbox stickers, buttons, pens and a notebook from the launch in 2001.

So what’s the price for all of this console history? Well, the starting bid for the auction is set at $5000(USD), and so far there aren’t any bids. The auction ends at 12:39pm PST on January 2, 2013, so there’s not much time left either.

If you’ve got a love for gaming, and really deep pockets, you can check out the entire auction here.

How Many Gifts Are You Selling on eBay?

Every year, without fail, we all receive some bad gifts. Sure, you may’ve scored that phone, e-reader or laptop that you were lusting after, but there will be shockers, too: a hand-knitted sweater from your grandma, novelty socks, or, perhaps if you’re incredibly unlucky, an $80 Walmart tablet. And with gifts that bad, there’s only thing for it: eBay. More »

PayPal launches prepaid PayPal My Cash Card

One of the more annoying things about PayPal and getting money into your account has always been the need to transfer money from your bank account. Bank account transfers have been the primary method of getting money into a PayPal account since the service launched. PayPal announced that it has now launched its first fully branded cash loading card.

paypal-card

The cards are called the PayPal My Cash Card and allow users to load their PayPal account using cash rather than having to mess with bank transfers. The cards will be sold at pharmacies and discount stores around the country including CVS, Rite Aid, Fred’s, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and others are coming soon. The cards will be available in 30,000 locations across the United States.

PayPal plans to double that reach by 2013 to 60,000 retailers. To activate the card, the buyer would purchase the dollar amount they want to load with a card available in fixed amounts such as $20, $50, $100, and higher. Cards are available all the way up to $500 in value.

The user would purchase the card, pay the dollar amount at the retail location, and then go to PayPal and enter a pin number provided on the back of the card to access the money immediately in their PayPal account. Users can create a PayPal account during this process. PayPal charges $3.95 activation fee and users can load up to $500 per day to a maximum of $4000 per month. No credit check is required for the cards but users do have to provide a name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number to verify identity.

Steve Ballmer-autographed Microsoft Surface tablet goes up for auction

A signed product by the CEO of the company or its designer isn’t for everyone – after all they are usually priced way higher than the original, but at the same time we guess its price point can be justified by collectors who are looking to get their hands on a one-of-a-kind item. That being said if you think that describes you or someone you know, you might be interested to learn that a 32GB Microsoft Surface tablet signed by none other than Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer has gone up for auction on eBay where at this time of posting, it is priced at a whopping €1,500.

For those who have the cash to spare, it should be noted that by purchasing this signed Surface tablet, the money will be going towards good use where it will be spent on a Christmas party at the cancer ward Charité, Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Berlin as part of the Children’s Cancer Association. The tablet will come with free shipping and all of its original accessories, so if you’d like to do a good deed or just learn more about the auction and the charity, head on over to its eBay listing for the details (note: it’s in German).

eBay and PayPal see big jump in mobile payments this Thanksgiving

Betwix watching football, eating turkey, and enjoying the holiday festivities, shoppers used their mobile devices to pay for a large amount of their online shopping sprees. Both eBay and PayPal saw a massive jump in mobile payments this Thanksgiving holiday. The figures are compared to the payment numbers from Thanksgiving 2011.

EBay saw a 133-percent increase in mobile payments over their 2011 figures. PayPal saw a bigger jump, with a 173-percent increase over last year’s figure. The most active time period for mobile payments was between noon and 1pm Pacific time (3pm and 4pm Eastern time). This is in line with the spike in mobile usage that has happened over the last couple years.

For PayPal, the cities that clocked the most mobile payments includes Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and New York, in order by quantity. Mobile payments from Thanksgiving 2010 to 2011 increased 511-percent. If the numbers are any indication, shoppers are embracing the convenience of shopping from the comfort of their home.

This time span lines up with when Instagram traffic reached its peek today. The photo-filter app experienced its biggest day ever today, with in excess of 10 million photos being shared over a 24-hour period. At the height of its traffic, 226 Thanksgiving images were shared per second. This trumped the 800,000 shared during Hurricane Sandy.

eBay store for refurbished Apple products is run by Apple

If you want save some money and purchased Apple products on eBay, often you take your chances with individual sellers. Apple has been confirmed to have its own store on eBay selling Apple certified refurbished products. The products sold in the store include a full one-year warranty and are returned to like-new condition.

All iPads and iPods sold on the eBay store by Apple included new battery and all the products have received complete burn-in testing. MacBook products and other gear have also had the original operating system reinstalled and all products sold on eBay store a repackaged with original manuals and cables. The refurbished products also go through a final quality inspection by Apple before being sold on the eBay store.

This particular eBay store has been around for about a month and is simply called the Refurbished Outlet. The eBay store had no contact information that is traceable back to Apple on the backend and had 99.7% positive reviews. Some suspected that it might actually be Apple testing how well selling refurbished products on eBay worked.

9to5Mac reports that it has learned these products are coming directly from Apple and that it is an Apple-run store within eBay. Products in the eBay store are also said to be identical in price to refurbished products purchased at Apple stores around the country.

Apple quietly launches official eBay store of their own

Buying your gadgets off eBay might be a good way to land yourself a deal, but on the flipside there is always a chance that the product sold to you is a fake, which means you could have wasted a few hundred dollars thinking you were about to get the genuine article. That principle applies to all sorts of products, including Apple’s range of Mac computers and iOS devices. Interestingly it seems that Apple has quietly launched an official eBay storeof their own in which eBay shoppers will be able to purchase refurbished Apple products from.

Prior to this eBay store, refurbished Apple products were mainly bought via Apple’s online retail website, but we guess now there’s an alternative channel for the eBay shopper. If you were hoping for lower prices prepare to be disappointed as they appear to be priced similarly to Apple’s website, but the good news is that this means that you will be receiving the same warranty as well. In fact depending on where you live, you could find yourself paying lower taxes which we guess could translate into savings.
