Verizon Edge early upgrade program officially unveiled, will begin August 25th

Verizon Edge

Quickly following AT&T’s footsteps, Verizon Wireless is throwing its hat into the early upgrade ring with a few unique twists and turns of its own. The program, known as Edge, will offer you the ability to pay the full retail price of your phone on a month-to-month basis, with the cost spread out over 24 months (as opposed to AT&T Next’s 20 month). However, you’ll also be able to upgrade your phone via trade-in after the first six months, provided you have paid off at least half of your phone’s total price. Unfortunately, also like Next, you won’t see any change in how much the standard wireless plans cost, so while you’re saving the upfront cost and switching phones more often, you’re also paying a lot more per month for the privilege. We’ve got Verizon’s blog post past the break if you’re looking for more details.

Huawei outlines plan to regain its share of European smartphone market

Huawei Device CMO Shao Yang shows off his Ascend Mate to journalists.

Last year, Huawei’s Device Business Group set an ambitious goal of shipping 60 million smartphones, but managed only 32 million, keeping it out of IDC’s top five smartphone vendors in 2012. That said, for Q4 that same year Huawei did finally break into top three, but it didn’t change the fact that it had been a tough period for Huawei’s smartphone division, especially for its CMO Shao Yang (pictured above with his 6.1-inch Ascend Mate). At the 2013 Huawei Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen yesterday, the exec was kind enough to share his side of the story about the hurdles his team faced last year — the period when Huawei was transforming from an original design manufacturer (ODM) to serve others, to an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in order to build devices according to its own specifications.

Numark Mixtrack Edge ultra-portable DJ controller announced, we go hands-on (video)

Numark Edge ultraportable DJ controller announced, we go handson

Just when you thought Numark couldn’t invent any more DJ controllers, it’s done it again. This time it’s MusikMesse at Frankfurt, with the little guy you see above — the Mixtrack Edge. It’s described as “ultra portable” and when you see how big it is — roughly the size of an iPad — we’re inclined to agree with that. In fact, when you see the device cooped up in its protective case with the lid down, you’d be forgiven for thinking that’s exactly what it was (a tablet). But, no… this is another attempt at forging a new DJ controller category. Numark’s done small before (like the DJ2Go), but the Mixtrack Edge has a significant trick up its sleeve — a built-in audio interface. This means no cable splitters, you instead plug headphones right in, and line your audio out to your speakers. Sound good? We went hands on to find out, so plug in after the break.

Razer begins shipping Edge units to those who pre-ordered this month

Razer begins shipping Edge units to those who preordered this month

Back when the Razer Edge pre-orders kicked off, on March 1st, the company wasn’t quite clear as to when exactly the device would commence shipping to early adopters, only going as far as saying it would be later that very month. Well, the good news is today Razer took to its own Facebook page to announce that its new-era gaming PC is now on its way to folks who put in a pre-order “from the March batch.” Meanwhile, Razer’s hoping other gamers will also shell out the hefty amount of $999-plus for its novel piece of hardware, urging potential buyers on the social network to snag a unit (or two) before they go out of stock — just don’t expect to get a keyboard dock with your order, as the previously reported Q3 availability for this add-on remains intact. Above all, however, it’s a great thing to see that what was once just a project, is now getting ready to arrive at consumers’ doorsteps.

Razer Edge Review: So Heavy, So Expensive, So Awesome

A gaming laptop in a tablet. It’s a thought experiment that raises a whole host of questions: Is that even possible? Can it possibly be good? Would anyone even want it if it were? And finally: How much does it cost? The Razer Edge’s answers translate roughly to “Yes!”, “Sort of.”, “Maybe?”, and “Erm, you better sit down.” More »

Razer Edge gets March 1st pre-order date

Boy, how time flies when you are having fun – or not. I digress, it was just last month in Las Vegas, Nevada, when the folks over at Razer took the opportunity to announce that they have successfully put together all the best elements possible of a gaming notebook/tablet, taking input from hardcore gamers who know best what they want, and asking the engineering team to conjure a miracle, resulting in the announcement of the Razer Edge. Well, we did take a good look at its specifications back then, but there is no harm in going through the list again considering how Razer has just placed the Razer Edge on pre-order from March 1st, and shipping it set to commence sometime later in the same month. It is definitely going to be an interesting gaming spring and summer, for sure!

Razer did say that all purchased units during the pre-order period will be shipped to consumers later that very same month, and we do wonder whether there will be enough supply to keep up with voracious demand, assuming that happens, of course. The Razer Edge is touted to be the most powerful tablet in the world, and before it is even released to the mass market, you might be interested to know that it has already picked up its fair share of awards, having swept eight gongs at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where among them include CNET’s “Best of Show” award.

Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder, CEO and creative director, had this to add about the Razer Edge, “The Razer Edge combines the features of full-functioning PCs, touch-enabled tablets and gaming consoles into one incredible, portable form factor. Furthermore, the Razer Edge’s powerful chipset, unique among all tablet computers, ensures that you can take advantage of the world’s most sophisticated games, programs and apps on these multiple platforms anytime.”

The Razer Edge will be powered by an Intel i5 processor and have a 64GB SSD, while the Razer Edge Pro sports an Intel i7 processor with an option for a 128GB or 256GB SSD. Its gamepad controller, home console dock and extended battery accessories will also be up for pre-order at the same time, although the optional keyboard dock is due for a launch in Q3 later this year. Prices for the Razer Edge begins at $999 and goes north from there.

Razer introduces Razer Edge

CES 2013 is still the place to be if you are looking for a tech mecca early January each year, and for the first time in history, we have the first crowdsourced gaming tablet in the world that has been turned into reality, coming in the form of the Razer Edge which was designed by gamers, and is specially launched just for gamers. You can call it a tablet, a PC, or a console, there is no real distinction between all three sectors as the Razer Edge is one of them and all of them at once. Razer boasts of it to be the most powerful tablet in the world, and we cannot help but agree to a certain extent.

Just in case you were wondering how come the Razer Edge looks so familiar, that is because it got its start in life as the highly-acclaimed Project Fiona PC gaming tablet concept which was first introduced at last year’s edition of CES, and it picked up some gongs along the way such as CNET’s “Best of CES 2012” People’s Voice Award, Stuff magazine’s “Hot Stuff” Award, IGN magazine’s “Best of CES” award and Laptop magazine’s “Best of CES award.” Expect the Razer Edge to arrive in North America and Asia Pacific sometime later this year.

Just what kind of gaming firepower does the Razer Edge come with? Well, it will run on the 3rd generation Intel Core processor alongside an NVIDIA GeForce graphics chipset to perform all the heavy graphical lifting for striking visual clarity, with Windows 8 as the operating system of choice, allowing the widest array of today’s most popular PC games to run natively on the Razer Edge without having to go through the tedious porting process, or to have it optimized or developed from ground up.

There will be two models to choose from – a standard Razer Edge with an Intel Core i5 processor, an NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 64GB SSD, while the higher end Razer Edge Pro will have a speedier Intel Core i7 processor, an NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and a choice between a 128GB or 256GB SSD. Out later this quarter, the Razer Edge will be priced from $999 upwards.
