“Love is in the air”, or so the song goes – which leads us to the question, have you gotten something for your other half this coming Valentine’s Day? If your blood froze when you heard the words “Valentine’s Day”, fret not – we know that boffins are notorious when it comes to forgetting anniversaries, birthdays and special occasions. Well, if you have run out of ideas as to what to purchase for your other half, how about this red Nextbook that will feature a special offer from VUDU, where you can pick from five movies for free as well as $5 credit that can be used for any rental.

This 8” Nextbook Android tablet comes in a special shade of red just in time for Valentine’s Day. It will run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the mobile operating system of choice, and if you are interested in picking it up, it ought to be readily available at select Walmart stores nationwide as well as over their website, Walmart.com.

Jason Liszewski, managing director and vice president of sales for E FUN, shared, “We are proud to offer Nextbook consumers a unique experience for Valentine’s Day with the VUDU special offer. With your choice of five free movies to download from a list of more than 25 titles and $5 in rental credit, you and your Valentine will have weekend-long entertainment available at your fingertips.”

Apart from that, the Nextbook Premium 8HD will also boast of Google Play and preloaded Android apps from Google, in addition to the Barnes and Noble NOOK for Android app. Other hardware specifications include a dual-core processor and 8GB of internal memory, dual webcams, an HDMI-out port, a USB 2.0 port, and a microSD card slot. The asking price? $99 a pop. That ain’t too shabby for what seems to be an entry level tablet, don’t you think so?

This may not be a highly priced diamond in the rough, but we were still rather pleased to come across eFun’s aPen Touch8 while walking around the showfloor at a Showstoppers event here in beautiful Las Vegas. Although not exactly surprising, it’s worth noting the Touch8 aPen takes an obvious cue from its A5 sibling, sporting a very similar design and being powered by the same ultrasonic infrared technology. What’s different here, however, is that the newly announced Touch8’s tailored for laptops (15.6-inch or lower) running Windows 8, with the pen’s main purpose being to bring moderate gesture-based features to non-touch machines. According to eFun, and confirmed by us, installation is relatively simple: you plug in the included receiver (pictured below), pop into the “Tablet PC Settings,” adjust the calibration, and voila, you are all golden.

During our short spell with the aPen Touch8, we did notice a bit of a lag from time to time while using the peripheral, though it did manage to (somewhat) easily swipe its way between screens, launch different applications and bring up the Charms Bar. Naturally, it doesn’t come anywhere near close to what you would experience on an actual touch-capable Windows 8 laptop, but it could definitely be an option if you’re looking for something to hold you over until you finally decide to upgrade your gear. Those interested will have to shell out $80 on the aPen Touch8, with eFun telling us to expect it to be available in about a month.

In a market slightly populated by some great well-priced tablets, and one that eFun is quite familiar with, the company decided now was a good time to add yet another slate into the mix. And while the Premium 10SE is slightly pricier than, say, the entry-level Nexus 7 model, eFun’s latest Ice Cream Sandwich slab does sport a larger 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display. Still, the Premium 10SE won’t impress many with the rest of its run-of-the-mill internals, which include a 1GHz CPU alongside 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage (expandable via microSD) and a front-facing 0.3-megapixel shooter — it’s also worth mentioning that eFun is kind enough to bundle in 25 eBooks at no extra cost. The Premium 10SE is available now for $280, though you can save a little cash by heading to your local Radio Shack or Hastings shop, where the Nextbook tablet’s priced at a more affordable $250.
