Amazon leaks tablet plans with propaganda poster

It would seem that Amazon’s newest internal mantra is “loose lips sink ships” as a propaganda poster – likely one of many – has been photographed and send in to the tech press the company is hoping to avoid. Send in to TechCrunch by what we must assume is an Amazon employee is this photo of a poster which shows a couple of lock-headed characters speaking about a Time Machine that Amazon will be releasing in the future – above them sits a thief/villain tech reporter who appears to have collected their secret speech and published it immediately thereafter. “A Secure Amazon Begins With YOU” encourages the poster.

This burglar is snapping photos from behind an e-reader you’ll all recognize and the “Tech Headlines” blog his work has been published in lets it be known that Q4 will be the place for the machine’s delivery. Amazon wants no such news to be released before they’re prepared to release it, of course, thus the poster was born. The poster also warns employees that they’re in for a world of hurt if they don’t recognize: “Who are you really talking to?”

Of course this poster also pops up right before a press event that’ll be taking place on the 6th of September in California. There we expect that we’ll be seeing at least one Amazon e-reader device of some kind or another as well as some updates to their online store initiatives. The poster all but confirms that we’ll be seeing more slate devices in the very near future, and makes it clear that a time machine will not be popping up in Q3, unfortunately.

Stay tuned as SlashGear keeps on the path of the next generation and Amazon attempts to stopper up all of their future leaks.

Amazon launches India Kindle Store, swap rupees for good reads

Amazon launches India Kindle Store, swap rupees for good reads

Indian consumers haven’t been cut off from Amazon’s world of e-book goodies, but their experience is about to get a lot more native with the launch of a local Kindle Store. The prices of over a million books are now available in rupees, and if you’re in need of hardware, the latest bare-bones Kindle can now be found in-store at Croma for Rs. 6,999. That E Ink Pearl screen comes at a premium, however, as there are more than a few budget-friendly tablets available in the country which support the Kindle app. The best news is probably reserved for fledgling writers, who now have access to Kindle Direct Publishing to showcase their work and hopefully net some purchases.

Nook heads to UK to convert e-reading nation

It’s time for Barnes and Noble to make an effort to cross the sea as their Nook lineup is ready and willing to spread across the entirety of the UK this summer. The company has been working with a variety of UK retailers and has struck a collection of deals to stock several models of the Nook e-reader tablet lineup this Fall. Starting in mid-October the Nook Simple Touch as well as the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight will be popping up both online and in physical shops across the nation.

This move will have the UK being the first location outside of the USA where Nook e-reader devices have been sold. With Barnes & Noble making it clear that their last financial year brought in $933 million for the Nook lineup alone, it’s no wonder they’re expanding out beyond the shores of the United States. The Amazon Kindle lineup is already sold throughout the UK, and this book retailer is gnawing at the bit at a chance to join in on the fun.

Be sure to check out our Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight review to see what you’ll be grabbing very soon!

The Nook Simple Touch as it exists today is a tablet device with a 6-inch display working with e-ink technology for easy reading both indoors and out. This device is currently out only in the USA and also has 2GB of flash memory, build-in wi-fi connectivity, and 2GB of RAM. You also get a microSD card slot for memory expansion and easy movement of files to and from other devices.

We’re expecting this device to be released in essentially the same price range as the original and will be working with nook.co.uk as well for digital content. You’ll be able to both download new reading material from the web and load 3rd party content with the microSD card slot once this device heads your way soon!

E Ink acquires SiPix, may dominate e-paper universe

Barnes and Noble Nook with GlowLight and Amazon Kindle

If challenging E Ink‘s supremacy in the e-paper market was hard before, it just became Sisyphean. The company is acquiring e-paper module maker SiPix through a share buyout worth about NT$1.5 billion ($50.1 million) if all goes smoothly. What goals E Ink has with the merger aren’t as apparent, although the company wants to go beyond just supplying the parts for another Kindle Touch or Nook Simple Touch — the aim is to “diversify into newer applications” even as the company corners those markets it already leads. The deal should close in the fall if regulators sign off on the deal, although we wouldn’t be too quick to assume clearance is a sure thing. As NPD DisplaySearch warns, the deal would give E Ink complete control of the electrophoretic display technology that dictates the e-paper field. That doesn’t allow for a lot of variety in the space when alternatives like Qualcomm’s Mirasol are being scaled back.

Tokyoflash Subway Watch Concept: Underground Map Easily Tells Time

Tokyoflash has got a great track record of turning user-submitted designs into reality. This new concept watch created by Peter Fletcher from the UK looks pretty cool, and if enough of you guys like the design, it could be produced some day.

Peter says that the layout of his concept watch is supposed to remind you of the way that subway maps look. When you push a button, the LCD watch will light up thanks to animated chain links, which will help display the proper time. The first “stop” on the line is the first digit of the current time, and so forth. This seems pretty straightforward and you’d probably get used to reading the time like this quickly enough.
