Electric Car Batteries Could Be Used to Power Europe’s Data Centers

Electric Car Batteries Could Be Used to Power Europe’s Data CentersElectric cars do run on batteries, and going along with the overall “green” theme of electric cars, you might be pleased to know that the batteries which run these four wheelers could eventually be used to help manage the voracious appetite for energy in Europe’s data centers. This particular idea would require the cumulative effect of plenty of old batteries as stores, supplying power as and when required, especially during peak times. It is said that approximately 2.5% of all European energy is consumed by servers in data centers, and by the time 2019 rolls around, this is tipped to grow to 5%.

Ask The Guy Who Built a 207 MPG Car in His Barn Anything You Want

Last week, we showed you the Illuminati Motor Works Seven, a home-built electric car and Automotive X Prize competitor that gets an utterly astounding 207 MPGe. Today, we’re hosting a live Q&A with Kevin Smith, who built the car, and journalist Jason Fagone, whose book Ingenious tells the engrossing story of the X Prize and the wily inventors who competed in it.

Nissan Leaf Owner Arrested For Stealing Five Cents Worth Of Electricity

Nissan Leaf Owner Arrested For Stealing Five Cents Worth Of Electricity

One of the main benefits to owning an electric car is the fact that you can hook up your vehicle to an outlet in order to juice it up, which is certainly more convenient than having to find a gas station to fill up your vehicle with fuel. But in the case of this story, the convenience of being able to hook up your electric car to any outlet got him arrested. (more…)

DUT 13 Electric Vehicle Breaks 0-60 World Acceleration Record

DUT 13 Electric Vehicle Breaks 0 60 World Acceleration RecordRecords are there simply because they are meant to be broken, and you can never know just what there is in store with a bunch of young people. After all, they do see things in a fresh manner and think out of the box. Case in point, a team of students from the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, has managed to set a new world acceleration record for electric vehicles in the 0-60 category. Their electric race car, aptly known as the DUT 13 (nothing unlucky about that number, that’s for sure!) has actually managed to reduce the previous record’s mark by more than a full half-second.

Tipping the scales at a mere 320 pounds, the DUT 13 has been pictured to be an incredibly lightweight racer, even when it will feature a four-wheel drive setup. Underneath the hood lies a system of small electric motors that was used to set the new record, where each of those are capable of generating 33 horsepower, working in tandem to deliver 135 horsepower. The power-to-weight ratio allowed it to arrive at the 62.14 miles per hour mark in a mere 2.15 seconds, and this invention might just see electric vehicles make larger strides in the world of auto-racing sometime down the road.

2014 Spark EV test drive: affordable green fun (video)

Spark EV test drive affordable green fun video

We’ve driven a number of EV‘s over the years — from the Ford Focus Electric to the Tesla Model S — but none have been as affordable as the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV. It costs $19,995, including the $7,500 federal tax credit, and just $17,495 in California, thanks to an additional $2,500 credit. The Spark EV is GM’s first pure electric car since the company scrapped the EV1 program in 2002. It’s a five-door supermini designed to carry four people plus luggage in comfort. While it’s primarily a city car, it’s perfectly at ease on the highway. We recently got the chance to take one for a spin in lovely Portland, Oregon, so hit the break for our impressions and hands-on video.

Minddrive: a Facebook, Twitter and Instagram-powered Electric Car

Minddrive is a non-profit program in Kansas City, in which students have designed an interactive car-powered by social media. This car is powered through Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

    minddrive

The students converted a vintage Volkswagen Karmann Ghia into an electric car operated via tweets, shares, and likes. They have a tablet linked to the engine’s circuitry that controls the power flow, converting each mention of Minddrive project on the three social networks into energy or “Social Watts.” A new like on an Instagram photo adds one watt, and a comment or share on Facebook gives three watts and a new follower on Twitter translates as five watts.

They are trying to raise awareness about the non-profit so the team will use this social fuel to drive the car from Kansas City to Washington, DC. They will need 71,040 social watts to get there. Hit their website to help them out.

New Nissan Leaf comes to the UK with battery leasing option, extended range

New Nissan Leaf comes to the UK with battery leasing option, extended range

With price reductions on both sides of the Atlantic, and a battery replacement promise, Nissan is clearly keen to lure you over to the EV side of the fence. The latest ploy comes in the form of a battery leasing scheme in the UK market. Dubbing them “Flex” models, cars bought with a leased battery will start at £15,990 (about $24,000) thanks to a British government grant scheme that knocks £5,000 ($7,700) off the price. It’ll then cost £70 ($108) and upwards a month to rent the battery depending on the contract and mileage. The new British-built version also comes with a swathe of improvements (over 100 claims Nissan), with top-billing going to the extended range — from 109 to 124 miles. With charging times also said to be close to 50 percent of those of the original Leaf, the car certainly seems to be moving with the times. Those who prefer to buy the car and battery together as one, can still do so, at the expense of the £5,000 grant. Still undecided? Remember even more improvements could be on the way.

Detroit Electric SP:01 Is One Mean Electric Sports Car

Detroit Electric SP:01 Is One Mean Electric Sports CarThe Tesla Roadster can be said to be a dream car for many a Greenpeace activist, although for all intents and purposes, a hybrid like the Toyota Prius would be a far better bet. Well, perhaps it is time to see that the electric sports car market is maturing, especially when you see yet another competitor hit the scene after the Tesla’s Roadster production drew to a close at the end of 2011. Detroit Electric has just announced a different Lotus-based sports car which is capable of hitting 0–60mph in a matter of just 3.7 seconds.

The Detroit Electric’s pride and joy would be the SP:01, where in order to achieve such speed within the shortest period of time possible, it comes with a custom carbon fiber body as well as a $135,000 price tag. Headed by former Lotus Engineering Group CEO Albert Lam, this could very well be the reason why Lotus’s Exige does seem to be the SP:01′s starting point. Production of the SP:01 production will begin this August with a limited run of 999 cars.
