Lightning electric motorcycle bests gas-powered bikes at Pikes Peak

Lightning electric motorcycle bests gas-powered bikes at Pikes Peak

With 156 turns over its 12.42-mile (19.99 km) course and elevation changes ranging from 4,720 ft (1,440 m) to 14,110 ft (4,300 m), Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of the most grueling races in the world for both humans and machines. It’s particularly challenging for gas-powered vehicles, since the air contains less oxygen at higher altitudes. As a result, electric cars and motorcycles have gained popularity at the event in recent years. In fact, 2013 marks the first time an electric bike’s beaten its gas-powered rivals, with Carlin Dunne and Lightning Motorcycles finishing the race in 10 minutes and 0.694 seconds — ahead of Bruno Langlois who managed 10 minutes and 21.323 seconds on a Ducati Multistrada 1200 S. While electric vehicles are expected to dominate Pikes Peak in the near future, it’s going to take a few more years before autonomous cars win the event.

World’s Fastest Electric Superbike: All the VROOM, None of the Gas

World's Fastest Electric Superbike: All the VROOM, None of the Gas

Electric vehicles are quickly making strides towards widespread adoption; just look at the Nissan Leaf or Tesla S. The same holds true for motorcycles, though these battery-powered two-wheelers are built more for urban commuting than hardcore performance. That’s where the Mission RS comes in.

Smart Ebike: German Car Company Outs Its First Electric Bike

There are plenty of electric bikes these days, but from time to time, one comes along that sets itself apart, like this one from Germany’s Smart. Smart is best known for their ultra compact city cars, but I’m impressed with this e-bike too.

The Smart Ebike provides 250 watts of power from its front-mounted motor, and can reach speeds up to 15.5 mph. It’s supposed to be able to go even faster when you use the 3-speed gear hub. Its chain has been replaced by a carbon tooth belt, which is supposed to be more efficient and last longer than a normal chain.

It’s been designed to work for urban travel. Its rechargeable battery can cover up to 62 miles on a charge. It takes about five hours to charge it up, and there’s also a regenerative system that will top off the battery when coasting, braking or riding downhill.

2014 Chevy Spark EV will retail for $27,495 before incentives, hits West Coast freeways in mid-June

Chevy just announced pricing for its 2014 Spark EV. The all-electric compact will retail for $27,495 before incentives, such as a $7,500 federal tax credit and up to $2,500 in state and local credits. All told, you could drive the car home for less than 18 grand, and California residents will net HOV (carpool lane) access to boot. The two-door vehicle ships with a 21kWh battery pack, giving you an estimated range of 82 miles on a full charge. You can also add on DC Fast Charging capability, letting you recharge up to 80 percent in about 20 minutes at select stations. Alternatively, you can charge up using a 240-volt system in about seven hours. The car also includes Chevy’s MyLink infotainment platform, the RemoteLink smartphone app and three years of OnStar service. It’ll be available at select dealers in California and Oregon by mid-June.

Tesla Motors repays Department of Energy loan nine years early

With a wire transfer of $451.8 million, Elon Musk has finally made good on his promise to repay the hefty loan Tesla received from the Department of Energy well ahead of its 2022 due date, beating even Musk’s own five-year estimate. This comes on the heels of a very profitable first quarter, and is yet another sign the electric car maker is doing quite well on the greener side of things, despite a touch of bad press earlier this year. For more on what Tesla has to say about this milestone, check the press release after the break.

BYD e6 all-electric taxis, Premier sedan launch in Hong Kong

BYD e6 allelectric taxis, Premier sedan launch in Hong Kong

Anyone who’s visited Hong Kong within the last few years has probably experienced the city’s thick soupy smog. Sure, things aren’t as bad as they are in Beijing, but pollution from the mainland often wraps the metropolis in a humid haze — and we’re not sure an all-electric taxi rollout is going to do anything to alleviate that. Just 45 of the BYD e6 cabs are now on the road, so the release is mainly symbolic — only a few dozen lucky drivers will be cruising up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) of city streets between charge breaks at one of nine area stations. Private citizens, for their part, can take ownership of the e6 Premier sedan — the civilian version just began shipping as well.

Terrafugia considering TF-X, a vertical-takeoff flying car (video)

Terrafugia researching TFX, a verticaltakeoff flying car

We’ve been hearing about Terrafugia’s Transition “flying car” for, well, far too long, considering that it has yet to even venture beyond the prototype phase. The prop plane / roadworthy vehicle combo has its fair share of fans — some of them with deep enough pockets to place an order — but it won’t be making its way from your garage to the runway anytime soon. With that in mind, the company’s TF-X vertical-takeoff model is even less likely to see the light of day, but it’s being considered nonetheless.

The plug-in hybrid-electric aircraft would take off and land vertically, like a helicopter — if the DOT and FAA allowed it, you could literally fly over the highway whenever you run into traffic, though we can’t imagine that pilots will ever get the green light to take off from public roads, even if the TF-X becomes a reality. For now, it exists only in the minds of Terrafugia’s ambitious team, a few image renders and a minute-long animated demo, which we’ve embedded for your viewing pleasure after the break.

Renault Twizy Sport F1 Electric Concept: The City Car Has Never Been This Fast

From time to time, I wish I had one of those tiny city cars that could park almost anywhere, because it would make living in the city a lot easier. However, most of the time, these tiny cars are a bit boring to drive because of their lackluster performance. Renault sought to change this with their new concept car.

renault twizy ev concept

If you can believe it, the Twizy Sport F1 Electric concept borrows technology used in Formula 1 race cars. This single-seater race car comes with a front splitter, side pods, a rear wing, and a diffuser to give it a sporty look. It uses a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) to recover lost power, which is similar to the one used by Renault F1 cars. It allows this little car to push out almost 100hp, making it as fast as the Mégane Renault Sport 265 (which has 265 horses!).

The car even comes equipped with an F1-style steering wheel, which would provide access to the vehicle’s various functions.

I’m curious to see if or when they’ll use this technology in a production vehicle. I’m sure that many city dwellers would be interested in driving one.

Detroit Electric Unveils SP: 01 Electric Sports Car

The automotive industry is a tough one for a new automaker to break into. It’s even tougher for a new automaker to break in the automotive industry with a completely electric vehicle. Most consumers are still staying far away from electric-only cars in large part due to range anxiety, so major manufacturers are focused on plug-in hybrids for now. Upstart automaker Detroit Electric has officially unveiled its new all-electric car, and it’s a sports car.

The car is called the SP:01 and it reminds me a lot of a combination of the Lotus Elise and the Tesla Roadster. The Detroit Electric vehicle is a two-seat limited edition electric sports car with a 200 hp electric motor mounted in the middle of the vehicle. Detroit Electric says that the car is the world’s fastest production electric vehicle with a top speed of 155 mph.

The vehicle can hit 62 mph in 3.7 seconds. The body is made from carbon fiber and the total weight is 2359 pounds. The lithium polymer battery pack has 37 kWh power, promising 180 miles driving range per charge. The car can also interface with smartphones giving drivers control over the climate control system and more.

All of this performance, technology and style comes at a price though, as the SP:01 will sell for a base price of $135,000 (USD).
