Girls Won’t Be Able to Resist this Rainbow Resistor Bracelet

It’s been a while since I did any serious circuit board hacking, but back in the day I saw my share of electronic components. One of my favorite parts was always the resistor – not because of its rudimentary electrical properties – but because its value could always be identified through a convenient color-coding scheme. In fact, I think at some point I had actually memorized a resistor color chart. Of course, now my mind is feeble, and I couldn’t tell the difference between a 22 ohm and a 2200 ohm. While I don’t personally wear bracelets, I’m still highly compelled by this nifty bracelet made from colorful resistors.

Artist Megan Nissen of Techcycled carefully selects resistors and assembles these nifty “ladder” style bracelets which have a rainbow of resistor colors. While the bracelets are definitely geeky, they’re also elegant, with sparkly Swarovski crystals and finished with a nice silver toggle clasp to hold it on your wrist.

The Rainbow Resistor Bracelet sells for $125(USD) over on Etsy. While you’re over there, be sure to check out Techcycled complete collection of  jewelry fabricated from recycled electronic components and wires.

Resistance is futile. There, I said it.

Arduino Launches Tiny New Arduino Micro Board

If you’re the sort of DIY tinkerer that likes to fiddle about with Arduino-based projects, you’ll be glad to hear that the Arduino project has officially launched a new version of the powerful little microcontroller. The new product is called the Arduino Micro board, and it is based on the technology behind the Leonardo board. The main feature of the device is its small size, measuring just 1.9″ x 0.7″.

The new Micro board packs an ATmega32U4 controller, and all the power and performance of that Leonardo board in a significantly smaller package. Arduino says the new smaller form-factor makes it easy or for enthusiasts to embed the technology inside of even smaller projects. The Arduino Micro board can be used on a breadboard or soldered to a custom-designed PCB.

The Micro was developed in conjunction with Adafruit Industries. Adafruit is also creating a series of accessories to go along with the new Micro board. The new Micro board will be available exclusively online through Adafruit and in Radio Shack retail stores. The version with headers will sell for €21 (~$27 USD) and version without headers go for €18 ($23 USD). It will be available for pre-order starting next week, and shipments start on November 26th.

Electronic nose sniffs out harmful airborne substances

Having a well trained team of dogs when it comes to sniffing out harmful materials and perhaps even drugs is essential to any government that is serious in the nation’s security, but what happens when you do not have the time and resources to groom an entire pack? The answer is simple – rope in the wonder of electronics. This particular tiny sensor is a project which is eight years in the making, where the final prototype can pick up the presence of harmful airborne substances, thanks to the efforts of a chemical engineering professor who intends to introduce this prototype electronic nose to the mass market. I am sure government officials have perked up their ears upon hearing this, and so did those in the military. (more…)
