Sceptre introduces a budget-friendly 3D HDTV

Have you heard of the name Sceptre before? I am quite sure that those who are constantly on the lookout to upgrade their consumer electronics devices at home without breaking the family’s budget will certainly have come across devices from Sceptre before. The latest 3D HDTV measures 46″ across diagonally, where each purchase will come with four pairs of polarized passive 3D glasses in addition to SRS TruSurround HD Sound in an elegant piano black finish.

The latest 3D HDTV from Sceptre intends to deliver a totally new dimension in entertainment by introducing the latest 3D technology from Sceptre which is said to be able to display eye-popping images at a 1920 × 1080 and 1080P resolution, not to mention warming up your ears with its heart-pumping surround sound capabilities. Apart from that, the 46″ LED HDTV will also be able to hook itself up to external devices including cameras, computers and Blu-ray players in a simple and easy manner thanks to the inclusion of its five HDMI ports, a solitary USB port and a VGA port.

Cathy Chou, Vice President of Operations, Sceptre, “Quality, ease of use and affordability continue to be primary concerns of users seeking a 3D home entertainment experience. Our new 3D HDTV provides the same high quality experience as more costly units at a fraction of the price. In addition, we’ve made it easy for the whole family to enjoy by including three passive 3D and one passive clip-on glasses.”

Thanks to the inclusion of theater quality polarized passive 3D glasses, Sceptre’s latest offering is said to be able to deliver long term cost efficiency when compared to other 3D technologies. After all, passive glasses need not rely on batteries or receivers to get the job done as your eyes enjoy pop up visuals that might just scare you. Come to think of it, how come we have yet to see an increase in horror movies that take advantage of 3D technology? It would really be something, and the Final Destination series do not count in my book. Apart from that, passive 3D glasses are also able to produce a full-color image which has been touted to be a whole lot more comfortable to watch, doing away with headaches and eye fatigue that are often than not associated with active glasses.

It is said that this 46-inch 3D HDTV from Sceptre will be accompanied by 4 pairs of polarized glasses, and you can pick one off the shelf for $999.99.

P&P Office Waste Processor – Scrap Paper in, Pencils out

My kid is constantly raiding my printer for paper. I probably wouldn’t mind as much as I do, if it weren’t for the fact that said paper keeps winding up with a bunch of useless scribbles on it all over my desk top, and then to make matters worse, when I go to print something… well you know how it goes.

It’s certainly not just my lovely child, there is enough waste paper to be had in every home, office and school on our planet, but what should we do with it? Well, industrial designers Chengzhu Ruan, Yuanyuan Liu, Xinwei Yuan and Chao Chen have an idea, how about recycling our waste paper into useful pencils? Seems like a good idea and the team has produced a concept machine that does exactly that.

The P&P Office Waste Processor allows users to simply feed a sheet of no-longer-necesary paper into the appropriate slot in the machine, which then tightly wraps it around a pencil lead and voila, the Office waste processor generates an artistic, usable pencil. You go from garbage to pencil in no time flat, and a small forest can heave a collective sigh of relief. No word yet on whether or not this concept will eventually become a reality, but if they will offer different colored leads, for making colored pencils I’m all in.

Lampbrella not only lights up the street, but it keeps you dry, too

London is very wet at the moment – and someone even mentioned in her Facebook status that someone forgot to place an order for summer this year. Well, it is definitely one of the wetter places on earth, and it would be wise to carry an umbrella with you wherever you go, never mind that it is summer. Since you are unable to predict a downpour, it is always better to be prepared. Designer Mikhail Belyaev has other plans though, coming up with what he calls the Lampbrella. As the name suggests, you can more or less figure out that this is an umbrella that doubles up as a lamp.

Or is it a lamp that doubles up as an umbrella? I think you get the picture, no? Basically, the Lampbrella is a lamp post that has its own rain-sensing umbrella built-in, where this concept will see a standard issue street lamp which has been fitted with an umbrella canopy in addition to an integrated electric motor which will open up or close the umbrella on demand. As mentioned earlier, there are integrated sensors, where these will make sure that the umbrella will be deployed so that pedestrians can enjoy some much needed shelter whenever it starts to rain.

Apart from the rain sensor, there is also a 360 degree motion sensor located on the fiberglass street lamp which is perfect to detect anyone who uses the Lampbrella in order to escape from the rain. When no movement is detected for three minutes, the canopy will then go about closing itself. It would be cooler that the Lampbrella is powered entirely by solar energy, but I guess there is always room for improvement, right?

Mikhail claimed that he was inspired to design the Lampbrella after he saw ordinary folks get wet on streets in Russia when the heavens opened up. Mikhail mentioned, “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street – Nevsky Prospect – and saw the street lamps illuminating people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy built into a streetlamp.”

This is still a concept, and there are no plans by any parties to send this into production. Any angel investors out there who are willing to take the risk?

Travel Scale for frequent travelers

When one goes traveling, most of the time we stay at a hotel – and most modern hotels come with its range of amenities, including lush toiletries as well as a bathroom scale for you to figure out whether all those buffet breakfasts and dinners that you had have done a number on your belly. Of course, there are moments and places where you stay that does not come with any form of luxury at all, which is where a portable travel scale makes perfect sense. Just how portable is this $44.95 device, anyways?

We are looking at a measurement of just 9.5″ wide, and yet is capable of weighing folks of up to 330 lbs., imagine that! Smaller than your iPad, the Travel Scale will rely on high precision strain gauge sensors in order to deliver accurate weight readings to 0.1 lb. Not only that, the tempered glass platform also delivers alevel of durability which enables it to withstand all sorts of travel rigors. Timbuk2 offers gadget charging packs

The modern day road warrior is definitely not content with just a mobile phone, it must be a smartphone. Of course, just in case the smartphone runs out of juice halfway during the journey, there is always a solution like a portable battery pack, or perhaps a collection of other devices such as a GPS navigation system to help you get around in unfamiliar territory when your smartphone is down and out on its battery life. Having said that, this would mean the modern day road warrior has plenty of chargers to remember each time he or she travels – and it is up to companies like Timbuk2 to come up with a new range of gadget charging packs.

This new line of gadget charging packs from Timbuk2 is the result of a collaboration with Joey Energy, where in an age of superheroes as well as teamwork, here we are with high fashion meeting technology in one package – all in the name of delivering the Power Commute messenger bag as well as Power Q backpack, where they will both come with Joey’s T1 power supply.

According to Timbuk2, this particular Joey T1 power supply is not available in the open market for individual sale. As it stands, it boasts a rugged, water-resistant case as well as come with a corded satellite USB for charging purposes. In order to make life a whole lot easier for busy commuters who are always on-the-go and want something more convenient to use, it has no buttons whatsoever, and the charging process will begin the moment you plug it in.

It will remain within a dedicated pouch in each bag, ensuring you enjoy nothing but the simplest experience when it comes to on-the-go charging of laptops, tablets, smartphones and other gadgets. It must be noted, however, that the Timbuk2/Joey packs will not be accompanied by solar panels or other eco-friendly charging hardware. How does it get the job done then? For starters, the Joey T1 will receive juice by being connected to a standard wall outlet, in addition to a pass-through feature that enables you to simultaneously charge the T1 and an external device.

As for the Power Commute, this is a TSA-compliant laptop bag that not only comes with a Joey charger, but will also include a removable shoulder strap and faux fur-lined phone/gadget compartments. Regardless of which model you choose, they will arrive this October for $199 a pop.

Useless Box Kit

Are redundant gadgets worth looking into? I suppose so, especially in this day and age when our lives are extremely stressful (for those of us who are in high pressure job situations, that is), it makes perfect sense to let go and laugh a whole lot once in a while. Having a gizmo that basically does nothing might sound rather inane to some, but others could realize it to be some form of therapeutic gadget in a strange way. We are talking about the $39.99 Useless Box Kit here, where the name of the device itself is pretty much self-explanatory. After all, you are required to push a button to turn it on, and when that happens, it will turn itself off.

This is one fun (some say irritating) DIY electronics kit with just one primary function – that is, to turn it on and have you watch it turns itself off. It is more or less guaranteed that individual flip of the switch will cause onlookers to smile, although some of them might end up with a puzzled expression in the first place. Definitely ranks as one of the silliest electronics kits to date, and yet it is strangely attractive in its very own manner.

Olympus Meg 4.0 wearable display prototype

When Google first announced that they were about to work on Project Glass, you could hear jaws drop. After all, this is deemed to be a natural progression in the area of personal consumer electronics – and who does not want to look cool anyways? Seeing how Project Glass was demonstrated at the recently concluded Google I/O Conference in San Francisco, you could say that this is a niche product, and those who can afford it will most probably fork out the money. To be able to record what I see as well as snap photos without having to pull a digital camera from my pocket is definitely something new, and this novelty also extends the fact that it does not end up in the way of my vision.

Other companies are said to have bitten onto the Project Glass bug, and most recently, we have heard whispers on the grapevine that even Apple is looking into some sort of Glass alternative. Well, today, we have Olympus and their Olympus Meg 4.0 wearable display prototype which is meant to see action in everyday life. Sounds familiar? Let us take a closer look at the nitty gritty right after the jump.

For starters, the Olympus Meg 4.0 wearable display prototype will come with Bluetooth connectivity so that it can “talk” to similarly equipped smartphones, in addition to another obvious benefit, which would be wireless connectivity and easy controls. Apart from that, the Bluetooth chipset within does not really add to the overall bulk, allowing Olympus to achieve a compact, lightweight, low power consumption device that can be used for a long time.

The Olympus Meg 4.0 wearable display prototype also follows in the footsteps of Project Glass, as this particular prototype does not get in the way of your normal sight, so it does not obstruct your everyday view. Not only that, you can also increase the utilization efficiency of light of the display panel in order to achieve a higher level of brightness without sipping too much power. Other hardware capabilities include a built-in acceleration sensor and gyroscope that will, in the long run, I suspect enable you to do far more than just snap photos and record videos. No idea on when a consumer class version is ready, but we do hope sooner rather than later at a sweet price point!

Ultra-Portable USB Turntable

Now here is something that brings together the old and new under a single roof – with the Ultra-Portable USB Turntable, of course. You can choose from two flavors – the £49.99 LP 2 GO or the £59.99 Duo Deck. Regardless of your choice, both of them were specially designed with easy transport in mind, making them an extremely portable version of the turntable.

The tone-arm can itself can be locked into place whenever you are up and about, and as there is no large platter that can be found on conventional turntables, it is capable of slipping easily into a backpack or a drawer without missing a beat. Other hardware specifications include an integrated speaker, a 1/8” external jack and can be powered by either being plugged in to the mains, a USB port, or the old standby – batteries.
