Hyperkin RetroN 5 Console Announced, Skipping RetroN 4

If you recall, a few weeks back, we mentioned that Hyperkin was working on an update to their popular retro multi-console, the RetroN. Well, today, they officially showed off the console, and it’s been renamed the RetroN 5, since it has five cartridge slots.

Announced at this weekend’s Midwest Gaming Classic, the RetroN 5 made an appearance as both a rendering (shown above), and as a shiny red prototype console, still bearing the RetroN 4 badge, and without the promised GBA slot.

The five-slotted console will be able to play original cartridges from the NES, SNES, Genesis, Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color and Game Boy. In addition, it will offer an HDMI output for playing games on today’s HDTVs, and a special video enhancement circuit to ensure high quality playback at resolutions up to 720p.

The RetroN 5 will also offer technology to improve the audio quality compared to what you’re used to hearing from emulators, with the ability to increase playback frequency if you so choose. While you can play games using the original controllers from the various retro systems, the RetroN 5 will ship with a Bluetooth wireless controller(s?), complete with a lovely clicky microswitch D-Pad.

Hyperkin has also suggested that you’ll be able to use controllers from different systems on each other’s games. For instance, you could play an NES game with a Genesis controller. The system will also have its own custom interface, which will provide the ability to save states, map buttons, and tweak gameplay speed by “overclocking” the game systems. You’ll also be able to assign settings to macro keys on the sides of the controller for easy access. While the menu UI I saw was clearly in the early stages of development, it was already accessible on the prototype system.

Hyperkin hasn’t revealed the pricing or an exact release date for the RetroN 5, but they’re hoping to release the system this July – though they were clear they want to give their development team enough time to put a shiny coat of polish on the finished product, so that date isn’t carved in stone.

Here’s video from today’s announcement for more details on the system.

Secret Game Boy Advance Emulator In iPhone App

Secret Game Boy Advance Emulator In iPhone AppEaster is right around the corner, where it will be celebrated at the end of this month, and you know for sure that there will be Easter Egg hunts and the like in countries where Easter is celebrated. Well, forget about those super sweet chocolate eggs, especially when you can concentrate on Easter Eggs found in apps. Easter Eggs within apps are so called, as they offer something out of the ordinary, and this time around, it is an iPhone app known as Awesome Baby Names which comes with a hidden Game Boy Advance emulator that has been programmed within.

This emulator can be unlocked in a jiffy thanks to a simple sequence of taps, but chances are you will have to get to this app rather quickly before Apple removes it from their App Store, knowing just how strict they are with their App Store policies. Of course, unlocking the emulator is one thing, getting hold of legit ROMs is a totally different issue. Have you unlocked this emulator already, and how do you find its performance?

Emulator Runs x86 Windows Apps on Windows RT Devices: A Window to the Full Windows

I think that one of Microsoft’s biggest mistakes in recent years is Windows RT, and by extension the Surface RT. I’m not saying Windows RT devices are useless. It’s just that seen in the context of their release, they are products that can confuse and scare off potential Windows 8 users. Microsoft might be better off supporting this hack that lets full Windows programs run on Windows RT.

windows x86 emulator for windows rt by mamaichi

Xda-developers forum member mamaich is currently developing a program that enables Windows RT devices to run applications that were originally intended to run on the desktop version of Windows. In other words, it’s going to turn a Surface RT into a Surface Pro (with weaker hardware). Mamaich is aware and clearly states that even in its finished state, the program isn’t a cure-all. It won’t be able to launch some desktop applications simply because there are many hardware and software limitations in Windows RT devices. We do know that it can launch Heroes of Might and Magic 3, though.

Head to mamaich’s thread on the xda-developers forum to download or find out more about the program. Mamaich lays out the intricacies of the program in this particular post. This isn’t for the faint of heart though; the program is in beta and it requires you to jailbreak your Windows RT device.

Dolphin Nintendo Wii, GameCube Emulator Running On Android

There have been a number of video game console emulators available on Android that can play Nintendo 64, PlayStation and even hand-held game devices like the Nintendo DS. But it looks we may finally be getting a Nintendo Wii and GameCube emulator in the very near future.

The Dolphin emulator has been available for years for Windows, Mac and Linux, and it looks like its developers are planning on an Android release. A teaser image as well as a video showing the emulator running on a Cortex-A15 ARMv7 Samsung Chromebook were released recently. The video shows the Dolphin emulator playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl, although it currently runs at a crawl.

Still, seeing how there will soon be even more powerful Android devices available to consumers this year, being able to run Dolphin on an Android device is a worthwhile first step. Optimizing it for newer Android devices will be a logical second step, although we’re not sure when exactly hardware on Android devices will reach speeds fast enough to run Nintendo Wii or GameCube games at a worthwhile speed.

JXD S7300 HD Gamepad2: Best Handheld Gaming System Yet?

In the market for a serious portable gaming machine? While you might have your eyes set on Nvidia’s upcoming Project Shield, here’s a very capable system you can buy right now. The JXD S7300 HD Gamepad2 is a power-packed portable that’s ideal for playing both retro emulated games and today’s latest Android titles.

jxd s7300 handheld 1

The just-released Android 4.1.1-based handheld offers dual, true analog sticks, a real D-pad, dual shoulder buttons, Start, Select and ABXY face buttons, so it’s perfect for controlling just about any game you can throw at it. It’s got an ample 7-inch 1024×600 display, which also supports 5-finger multitouch. It’s also got the requisite 3-axis motion sensors for games that depend on those controls. It includes software for mapping buttons and joysticks to your Android touchscreen games as well. Dimensions for the handheld are 9.5″(W) x 4.77″(H) x 0.56″(D) – about the size (but not the thickness) of the Wii U GamePad, and it weighs 0.90 pounds – about mid-way between the weight of an iPad Mini and an iPad 4.

jxd s7300 handheld 2

It comes pre-loaded with full-speed emulators for the original Sony PlayStation, Neo-Geo, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, NES (Famicom), Super Nintendo (Super Famicom), Sega Genesis (Mega Drive), and Capcom CPS1/CPS2 systems. But since it’s running Android, it’s easy to add more emulators, like MAME4droid. It even comes with Superuser pre-installed, so you can root the system in seconds and install pretty much anything you want on it.

jxd s7300 handheld 3

Under the hood is an Amlogic MX dual-core chipset (Cortex A9 CPU, ARM mali400 GPU), running at 1.5GHz, and 1GB of system RAM. Connectivity is 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and “external connection to Ethernet and 3G” whatever that means – presumably via its USB 2.0 port. It’s unclear if it supports Bluetooth though. And while it can’t wirelessly send content to your HDTV, it does have an HDMI output, so you can mirror its display to your big screen in full 1080p resolution. It’s even got a small 0.3MP user-facing camera for video chats, and true stereo speakers. You can check out all the detailed system info below (the 976×600 screen resolution reported is because AnTuTu doesn’t take into account the height of the title bar.)

jxd s7300 handheld internals

Here’s a video showing the system emulating the N64 classic Super Mario 64 at a buttery-smooth frame rate:

And if you’d like to play something more modern, how about Shadowgun – with physical joysticks and buttons?

The guys over at WillGoo are now stocking the JXD S7300, where it sells for $165.99(USD), or you can grab a bundle with a 32GB SD card for $186.99. Currently, the white model is sold out, but you can still get one in black (though it has a textured finish unlike the white one.) You can also pick up a pair of them for just $299.99, which might be cool since the system supports local Wi-Fi multiplayer.

Seems like this thing is pretty loaded for the price, never mind the fact that it works as a full Android Jelly Bean device, complete with web browsing, media playback, apps, etc. If you decide to buy one, there’s already a good discussion board for the JXD S7300 going on over at Dingoonity, so you can find out the scoop from others who have purchased or who are interested in the handheld.

GCW-Zero Open Source Gaming Handheld: Straight out of Pandora’s Box

A new challenger steps in the niche market… ring of portable consoles built to run emulators of older systems. But like the relatively famous Pandora handheld, the GCW-Zero aims not just to let players enjoy old games but also let those with programming skills tweak and play with its software.

gcw zero open source gaming handheld device

The GCW-Zero runs on OpenDingux, a Linux distribution that was originally made for Dingoo’s gaming handhelds. Hardware-wise the GCW-Zero has a 1GHz Injenic CPU, a Vivante GC860 GPU, 512MB DDR2 RAM and 16GB of internal memory. It also has a microSD slot that supports micro SDHC cards up to 32 GB or micro SDXC cards up to 64 GB, a mini-USB port and a mini-HDMI 1.3 out, which is a nice surprise. The controls are mostly what you’d expect – a d-pad, an analog nub, 4 face buttons, 2 shoulder buttons, select and start buttons – except the GCW-Zero also has an accelerometer, so it supports tilt controls.

You can check out more videos of the handheld on Shepherd’s YouTube channel. But if you think this is the portable videogame museum for you, pledge at least $135 (USD) on its Kickstarter fundraiser to reserve a unit. Can you imagine just how much money Nintendo, Sony, Sega and the other old guards would make if they put their heads (and licenses) together and released an all-conquering retro handheld?

Gameboo: The SNES Portable We Never Had

Nope, the picture below isn’t Photoshopped. The Game Boy below actually has four face buttons. It’s also not entirely a Game Boy anymore, because there’s a Dingoo A330 inside, hence the name Gameboo. Aside from playing Game Boy games, it can also play GBA, NES, SNES games and more.

gameboo by lxl 15

YouTuber lxl15 made Gameboo for a friend. It took him a total of 8 months, and the labor of love really shows. Lxl15 tried his best to make the Gameboo look like a stock Game Boy. For instance, the extra face buttons are also Game Boy buttons. He also turned the dials that controlled the Game Boy’s contrast and volume into left and right shoulder buttons, and re-purposed the extension connector port into a Mini USB port. Lxl15 also hollowed out the battery compartment and a spare cartridge to retain the handheld’s look while opening up space inside for electronics.

Just like the Dingoo A330, the Gameboo has an AV out and support for a wireless controller. In other words, it can be used as a retro home console as well!

Head to my good friend lxl15′s blog for the details on the awesome mod of my buddy. I mean me and lxl15 close like Bethlehem and Nazareth. You might as well call me lxl14.

Best Arcade Cabinet Ever Has 55-inch Screen, Plays Over 50,000 Games

I’ve always wanted an arcade cabinet in my house so I could play all of the classic arcade games like they were meant to be played. But I keep putting off the purchase because I have more important things to do with my money, like pay for food and my mortgage. Still, if I ever have the money lying around, I’ll definitely bite the bullet and buy one. And if I hit the lottery, I know exactly which machine I’m buying.

jace hall arcade cabinet 1

This extraordinary arcade cabinet was built by Jack Thompson and the crew at ArcadesRFun with a massive Samsung 55-inch LED/LCD Smart TV, and full controls for up to four players. It’s also got a second 37″ LG marquee display at the top so it can display different images up there during gameplay.

jace hall arcade cabinet 2

It’s got every controller you can dream of, including RGB LED ball top joysticks, RGB LED buttons, an RGB LED trackball (perfect for Marble Madness, Missile Command and Golden Tee), a true 4-way stick for certain games like Q*bert, and dual spinner controls for games like Tempest and Arkanoid, which can be swapped with tiny metal steering wheels for racing games. It’s also pre-loaded with the awesome Hyperspin UI, so it’s easy to flip between games on just about any system you can imagine.

jace hall arcade cabinet 3

Under the hood, this beast is powered by a Dell Alienware Aurora R4 PC w/i7 3.9GHZ six core CPU (overclocked to 4.1GHz), with 16GB RAM, 2 – 2TB hard drives and a 3GB AMD Radeon 7950 Video card. It’s also got a Blu-ray player. Audio is provided by a powerful 232 Watt Corsair Gaming Series PC speaker with a “giant” subwoofer. And in case playing games on MAME, MESS and other software emulators isn’t enough for you, it’s also got a PS3, Nintendo Wii, and Xbox 360 w/Kinect pre-installed. You’ll also be able to play console games using the wireless Xbox 360 gamepads.

jace hall arcade cabinet 4

You can also select from other custom controls, such as a Discs of TRON style flight stick (also great for games like Zaxxon), dual light guns, and a special push-pull spinner (also needed for Discs of TRON and its pesky custom controls.)

The original one of these machines was built as a custom commission project for Monolith Games/HD FILMS founder/IGN host Jace Hall, who wanted a single gaming system which could “play every known game ever made.” While I’m not certain that you could play all of these on it, it’s got over 50,000 games covered between all of the emulators and physical game systems inside. It’s unclear exactly what the differences are between the model you can purchase and Jace’s original – its creators only say that it’s “slightly scaled down.”

Here’s a video of the original system. Jump to about 1:10 to see the machine in action:

So how much does all of this arcade and console gaming goodness cost? Well, bust out your 401Ks, because this bad boy is selling for a whopping $19,995(USD) over on eBay. If you’re serious about buying one, ArcadesRFun has a demo unit available in New Jersey. And if you can’t afford $20k, but you still want a cool arcade cabinet, be sure to check out their website, where you can get into a smaller 32-inch, 2-player system for under $3k, or an incredible virtual pinball machine, complete with force feedback, for about $8k.

JXD S5110 Handheld Game Console: The Unholy Marriage of a PSP and Android

While I’m personally holding out for the Archos GamePad, if you absolutely must have an Android 4 gaming device before the holidays, you might want to check 0ut this oddity. The Chinese made JXD 5110 bears more than a passing resemblance to the Sony PSP, but it’s all Android, all the time.

jxd s5110 android psp

This handheld gaming system runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and supports 95% of all Android apps out of the box. It’s also got a (single) analog thumbstick, D-Pad, ABXY, Start/Select and shoulder buttons. Games are played on its 800×480 resolution, 5-inch touchscreen, and it’s also got a low-res (0.3 MP) rear camera built in. It’s powered by a an ARM Cortex A9 CPU, and has an ARM Mali400 GPU. It’s got 4GB of on-board storage, and can be expanded via a MicroSD card up with as much as 32GB of storage. Its built-in Wi-Fi supports 802.11g/b/n standards.  It’s also got an HDMI output so you can connect it to your TV.

jxd s5110 white

Of course, the main reason to buy a handheld like this is to play emulators of older gaming systems, and the S5110 can play classic games using any of the numerous Android-based emulators out there. It even comes pre-loaded with several emulators to get you started. While it’s definitely an odd-looking system, it’s available now, and costs under $100(USD) too. You can grab one over on Amazon in either Black or White.
