Gears Of War: Judgment Cinematic Trailer Highlights Emergence Day

Gears of War: Judgment is just a week and a half away from its release, which means we can expect to learn a little bit more about Kilo Squad before the events that occurred during Gears of War even happened. The game takes place immediately after Emergence Day and its Kilo Squad’s mission, nay, their duty to save Halvo Bay from the unstoppable Locust.

Gears of War: Judgment’s debut TV commercial may not have impressed us, but the game’s new cinematic trailer more than makes up for it as you can certainly feel the tension that’s building up in the game from the opening sequence. I mean, we see Baird salute someone and then get punched in the face and dragged off to stand trial. Then, all hell breaks lose as the Locust attack during Baird’s trial.

The cinematic trailer also highlights some of the multiplayer action we can expect in Gears of War: Judgment, which introduces a class-based multiplayer mode in addition to tons of explosions and blood. Two things Gears of War players already know is a staple of the series.

Gears Of War: Judgment ‘Cheevos’ Commercial Focuses On Multiplayer Hijinks

Last night’s re-run of Family Guy played host to the first commercial for Gears of War: Judgment, which will be releasing on the Xbox 360 on March 19. The commercial, called “Cheevos” ditches the traditional Gears of War commercials that featured some heart-wrenching visuals while somber music played, and instead went for a multiplayer-focused ad.

The Cheevos commercial highlights three Gears of War multiplayer fans who are apparently proud of achievements they’ve completed in Gears of War: Judgment. One fan completed 40 declassified missions, another won 92 Overrun matches and the last earning the “Like A Boss” achievement on his 22nd attempt. (more…)

Gears of War: Judgment Walmart Pre-Order Gets You Choice Of Gears 2 or 3

Gears of War: Judgment Walmart Pre Order Gets You Choice Of Gears 2 or 3A few weeks ago, Microsoft released a new trailer that highlighted some of the features of its upcoming Gears of War: Judgment. One of the nice, little bonuses Microsoft is making available with launch copies of Gears of War: Judgment is including a token that allows players to download the original Gears of War.

If you for some reason need a copy of Gears of War 2 or Gears of War 3, you’ll want to spend your hard-earned gamer dollars at Walmart as they’re offering their customers a choice of either title in addition to their pre-order bonus that will give players access to the Classic Hammerburst assault rifle for multiplayer.

Already own Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 and want to play the game as soon as possible? Then you’ll want to check out GameStop’s pre-order bonuses, one of which will allow Gears players to download the game’s multiplayer demo on March 15. Best of all, your rank in the demo will be transferred over automatically to the retail version during Gears of War: Judgment’s launch week.

Cliff Bleszinski quits Epic Games, leaves us with an Unreal feeling

Cliff Bleszinski quits Epic Games, leaves us with an Unreal feeling

Fall must be the season for sea changes in the game industry. Just weeks after BioWare’s founders retired, key Epic Games veteran and Design Director Cliff Bleszinski (known to many as just CliffyB) is hanging up his hat. He simply describes it as taking a “much needed break,” which makes sense when you see his development experience: he joined Epic’s crew with Dare to Dream Volume One in 1993 and has nurtured virtually every major (and often minor) game franchise at the company since, including the Jazz Jackrabbit platformers, untold numbers of games in the Unreal line and most recently the Gears of War series. Bleszinski hasn’t said where he’s headed next, although it’s hard to imagine him switching professions like the two BioWare doctors — for many, he’s synonymous with certain eras of first- and third-person shooters. Wherever he goes, we wish him the best of success.

Unreal Engine 3 runs on Windows 8 RT + Tegra 3

NVIDIA has announced that it has worked with Epic Games to port the Unreal Engine 3 to Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT (the version running on ARM architecture). This means that game developers using it will be able to target Windows 8 RT without too much trouble, if they account for the overall decrease in system and performance resources. Fortunately, that is very much manageable, so you can expect many Unreal game to show up soon.

If you are not a Windows person, you may have seen the Unreal Engine in action in iPad games like Infinity Blade (1 & 2). At the moment, the Unreal Engine 3 for Windows 8 RT will only run DirectX 9 rendering as it is the RT hardware platform limitation for now, but we’ve been told by several hardware manufacturers that 2013 would be the year of DirectX 11 for Windows 8 RT. At that point, we may see Unreal Engine 4 show up on Windows 8 RT.

The availability of Unreal Engine 3 to Windows 8 RT isn’t so surprising because this is an engine that was developed on Windows to begin with, and Windows 8 RT development is very close to regular Windows 8 development. Which Unreal-powered game would you like to see first on Windows 8 RT?

NVIDIA, Epic Games bringing Unreal Engine 3 to Windows 8 and Windows RT video

NVIDIA and Epic Games have successfully ported the full PC version of Unreal Engine 3 to both Windows 8 and, more importantly, Windows RT. Demonstrating the achievement on a Tegra 3-powered ASUS Vivo Tab RT, it played a buttery-smooth version of Epic Citadel, suggesting that developers of both PC and Xbox games should have no problem in bringing them over to the new operating system. It also casually mentioned that both Gears of War and Mass Effect were built on the engine, heavily implying that we could see titles of that caliber coming to Microsoft’s low-power OS once it makes it debut on October 26th, but we’ll let you decide for yourself after the break.

Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 now working on Linux through Google Chrome, more or less

Epic Citadel tech demo

A Holy Grail of Linux gaming has been an Unreal Engine 3 port. Getting one for the OS would unlock a world of games that has been the province of, well, just about any other mainstream platform. Thanks to Google preserving Flash on Linux through Chrome, that dream is alive in at least a rudimentary form. Experimenters at the Phoronix forums have found that Chrome 21 has support for the Stage 3D hardware acceleration needed to drive Epic Games’ Flash conversion of UE3. Tell Chrome to enable support as well as ignore a graphics chip blacklist, and suddenly you’re running Epic Citadel from your Linux install. When we say “running,” however, we’re taking a slight amount of poetic license. Performance isn’t that hot, and certain configurations might not show the medieval architecture in all its glory. We’ve confirmed with Epic that it works, but it’s still firm on the stance that there’s no plans for official UE3 support on Linux “at this time.” It’s still promising enough that maybe, just maybe, gamers can embrace an open-source platform without having to give up the games they love.

Epic Games: Infinity Blade on iOS more profitable by the pound than any other game we’ve made

Infinity Blade 1 on iPad

Traditional console makers have often sworn up and down that mobile doesn’t make money for game development. That might still be true for some developers, but you’ll get a very different answer if you ask Epic Games. Co-founders Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein have collectively described the currently iOS-only, Chair-developed Infinity Blade as the “most profitable game we’ve ever made” when considering the amount of money and time invested relative to the money coming back. Yes, that includes even the Gears of War series, which most consider Epic’s primary cash cow. Sweeney, like his long-time competitor Johh Carmack at id Software, is also taken aback by the power stuffed inside the latest generation of mobile devices — a 2012 iPad is nearer the performance of a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, he tells Gamasutra, and the pace is only picking up. Even more insights await in the interview with Sweeney; click below if you want a hint of what one of gaming’s pioneers has to say about where your tablets, phones and (yes) PCs are going.
