Air Force Enlists ESPN’s Help For Drone Footage Analysis

espn raptor Air Force Enlists ESPN’s Help For Drone Footage AnalysisThe Air Force has enlisted the help of ESPN in order to go through and perform a thorough analysis on the copious amounts of video footage recorded from drone missions. Considering how the total number of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) there are scouring the world, with a ton of footage being transmitted back to base in real-time, the Air Force has an unenviable task of poring over the data. They have then decided to enlist some assistance from the outside world, and this is where ESPN comes in.

David Deptula, a former Air Force lieutenant general, reportedly mentioned to USA Today, “We need to be careful we don’t drown in the data.” In 2011 alone, drone video transmissions amounted to some 327,384 hours of surveillance, where the majority of them comprise of “pattern of life” missions, where they involve recording compounds for days in a stretch. ESPN’s role would see them fall back on their expertise in sorting through the large amounts of game footage every single day, but bear in mind that no new technological breakthroughs were achieved. A transfer of skills is in store then, don’t you think so?

ESPN Xbox App Receiving SmartGlass Integration This Month

Sports fans who have taken their obsession to know anything and everything sports related via their Xbox 360 will have more control over their experience as ESPN has announced it will be updating its application to support Microsoft’s SmartGlass application available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices.

The updated ESPN application will allow users to pick highlights, change video streams and look at statistics from their mobile device running SmartGlass with the content showing up on the user’s TV. Instead of your screen becoming cluttered with on-screen information, everything will be moved to your mobile device’s screen leaving the program taking center stage on your TV screen.

For those who have been looking for a two-screen experience to go along with their ESPN watching, the upcoming ESPN app update on the Xbox 360 will be something we’re sure sports fans will be looking forward to. The update will hit the Xbox 360 some time later this month. Let’s just hope it’s before all of those Christmas Day football games that we’re sure you’re counting down the days until, since not should Christmas be full of presents and holiday cheer, but obviously football as well.

ESPN signs dozen year deal for Division 1 college football playoff games

ESPN signs dozenyear deal for Division 1 college football playoff games

Wondering who is more excited than college football fans to see that the top division is finally moving to a playoff system? It’s ESPN, which just announced it’s signed a 12-year deal for the championship games, semifinals, additional bowl games and “related programming.” The deal kicks in after the 2014 regular season, when ESPN’s current BCS deal ends. While it’s bad news for anyone hoping to get legit access without a cable package, ESPN now has rights to offer the games on TV, in 3D and to mobile devices through its WatchESPN apps (now including the Xbox 360) until 2026. ESPN says its broadcasts of two BCS Championship games have generated the highest cable audiences ever, so it’s no surprise they’d want to keep an iron grip on these new games. There’s more details in the press release after the break, hit the source link to hear an interview with network VP Brooke Magnus about the negotiations.

As for the company’s Optimum TV to Go, it has said that WatchESPN, Watch Disney Channel, Watch DisneyXD and Watch DisneyJunior will indeed be “coming soon” to the service, though it wasn’t quite clear about how “soon” that’s going to be.

Microsoft talks up Dropbox, Twitter, ESPN and PayPal for Window 8

There’s plenty of excitement surrounding the release of Windows 8 here at Build. The general consensus around the operating system, however, holds that the key to the OS’s success is all about the apps, and CEO Steve Ballmer had no shortage of news on that front. The green-polo-shirted exec made mention of an official tweet from Twitter, noting the service’s development plans for a Windows 8 app coming “in the months ahead.” Also on the slate is Dropbox — the popular storage service has an app “coming soon,” according to Microsoft’s own official blog. ESPN got a little face time at the event, showing off an app that’ll deliver news, scores and video to Windows 8 users. Paypal, meanwhile, took the opportunity to talk up an API that’ll bring its commerce services to Windows Store apps. More info on the new apps can be found in the source link below.

Cablevision inks deal with The Walt Disney Company, brings WatchESPN and more to subscribers

For some time now, Cablevision subscribers have been missing out on many of the internet-based and other offerings from The Worldwide Leader in Sports. Today, however, folks will be happy to know that The Walt Disney Company (ESPN’s parent outfit) and Cablevision have reached a deal which will bring access to a variety of new content on different platforms, including WatchESPN, ESPN3, ESPN 3D as well as on demand channels from ABC and Disney’s extensive repertoire. Mum’s the word on how much cash was involved in the deal, but we do know it’s a multi-year agreement and that Walt & Co. feel rather content about it, with a company’s spokesperson saying, “With our robust and ever-growing multi-platform content offerings, we’re pleased to be able to expand our relationship with Cablevision.”

Google Fiber announces qualified areas tomorrow, snags ABC channels including ESPN, Disney

Google Fiber announces qualified areas tomorrow, snags ABC channels including ESPN, Disney

The official list of the first “fiberhoods” Google’s Gigabit internet + TV service will be available in doesn’t come out until tomorrow, but it’s already looking like an even more attractive option thanks to a few newly announced channel additions. The team’s blog post lists several ABC channels that will be available on the HDTV service, not the least of which is sports giant ESPN, along with ESPN2, Classic, Goal Line, Buzzer Beater, Deportes, ESPNews, Longhorn Network and ESPNU. We’ve confirmed ESPN3 is also included, while WatchESPN and WatchDisney mobile access is planned for the “near future.” Overall it appears that ABC has squeezed its entire bundle including the Disney channels into the lineup (check the list after the break). That may not curry favor with those hoping for some revolutionary a la carte options, but should make switching to the $120 bundle easier for sports fans and families. Check the original launch announcement for more details on the Nexus 7-controlled service that blends standard TV and streaming options if you’re pondering a move to Kansas City.

ESPN delivers College Football companion app to iOS and Android just in time

ESPN delivers College Football app to iOS and Android just in time

If you’re a football fan, then we don’t have to tell you that college football kicks off this evening. But, perhaps, you have yet to find the perfect app for your smart phone or tablet to keep you informed during the fifteen solid hours of football this Saturday. ESPN hopes that its new ESPN College Football App will be the perfect companion on game day, and all year round for that matter, by delivering up to the minute news, stats and even video clips. The app ties in with your ESPN.com account for easy access to your favorite teams and of course will alert you to scores and other things, like potential upsets. It’ll even give you quick access to the WatchESPN app so you can check out a game on your second screen. Add in the fact that this app is free, and we don’t see any reason a football fan wouldn’t head to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and download it right now.

[Thanks, @bartenz]
