Oculus Will Co-Publish EVE: Valkyrie, The VR Spin-Off Game From The Popular Space Sim

Oculus isn’t just supporting CCP Games from a distance in its creation of EVE: Valkyrie – the maker of the Oculus Rift VR gaming headset announced today that it will co-publish the game with CCP, making it an exclusive launch title when the Rift launches to consumers later this year.

Valkyrie originally debuted under the codename EVE-VR, and features space fighter gameplay with an in-cockpit viewpoint. Oculus has used Valkyrie as a showcase piece of software for its virtual reality gaming headset, both at E3 last year and again at CES in January, where it was used to demo the new, more user-friendly ‘Crystal Cove’ production prototype Rift hardware.

Getting in bed with CCP as a co-publisher guarantees Eve: Valkyrie prime placement for the Rift’s eventual consumer launch, but it also means that Oculus will have the equivalent of a top-flight ‘console exclusive’, so to speak, complete with established brand recognition. The EVE Online MMO still entertains a massive audience, even a decade after its launch, as evidenced by the scope of a recent in-game space battle.

Hilmar Pétursson is convinced virtual reality gaming will be mainstream in 2014. It’s a bold claim to put to people who, by next year, will have been exhausted by next-gen console purchases. But Pétursson has already tasked 20 engineers at his company, CCP, with creating what looks set to be the first major game designed solely for the Oculus Rift VR headset. EVE Valkyrie is a high-profile commitment: a Wing Commander-esque dogfighting title, which will tie into the same universe as CCP’s main PC and console properties, EVE Online and Dust 514. The question is whether significant numbers of gamers will choose to spend an estimated $300 on a pair of Oculus goggles. For a number of reasons — some immediate, some futuristic and others downright outlandish — Pétursson believes they’ll come up with the money. They won’t be able to stop themselves.

CCP’s Oculus Rift demo becomes EVE: Valkyrie, space dogfighting due in 2014 (video)

DNP EVR becomes Eve Valkyrie for Oculus Rift, out 2014

We’ve been waiting for a proper Wing Commander successor for ages and it looks like EVE: Valkyrie could be it — if you don’t count Star Citizen, that is. What was originally demoed as EVR back at EVE Fanfest and on the Oculus Rift HD at E3 is now a multiplayer space dogfighter set within developer CCP’s longstanding EVE Online universe. Details are as scarce as Megacyte, but, according to the Icelandic dev, it’s coming out in 2014. It’s a sure lock for a PC release, but CCP’s history with the PS3 EVE spin-off Dust 514 and Sony’s amoré for the Rift makes us wonder if consoles are in its future. Hopefully this means we’ll be able to play on PS4 at some point, but instead of holding our breath, we’ll just keep watching the trailer below on repeat.

Notion Ink renders show Adam II, accessories and EVE smartphone

Notion Ink‘s been teasing the Adam II for well over a year now, and while the first generation left us cold, we’re curious to see what the second attempt brings to the table. A series of renders recently surfaced that allegedly show the Android tablet, its accessories / packaging and a companion smartphone concept named EVE. It’s unclear if the images — which have since been pulled — are legitimate, but the design appears to match previous leaks. The accessories include a collapsible docking station, USB charger, stylus and dual-tone leather carrying case. What’s most intriguing, however, is the EVE smartphone which also runs Android and features a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen along with a secondary display mounted on its spine, just like the Adam II. Check out the gallery below for the complete set of pictures.
