Evernote launches Accelerator program to help out developers

If you’re an app developer that builds app around Evernote’s API and platform, the company wants to help you out. If you’re lucky enough, the company will bring you to their headquarters for a month-long entrepreneurship that will aim to help improve on developers’ apps. Evernote is calling the program Accelerator, which is an extension of the company’s existing developer program.

evernote

The teams that will be selected will come from the 2013 Evernote Devcup, in which winning teams will be flown out to California in an all-expenses-paid trip to work closely with Evernote staff on their products and apps. Some of the cost of the Accelerator program will come from Honda and Japanese telecommunications company Docomo.

At the end of the month-long course, the teams will then present their finished products in front of an audience of investors, journalists, and various leaders and executives, with the possibility that these apps could be picked up by investors or other companies, so there’s definitely a huge benefit in the program.

The Evernote Devcup was announced at SXSW, and app submissions opened up yesterday. Any app that integrates with Evernote’s API is eligible to compete in the Devcup. It’s a four-month long competition that challenges teams to come up with the best apps that work with Evernote, and a select number of teams that win will be sent to participate in the Accelerator program.

Evernote Hello for iPhone updates with passcode lock, improved contacts

Evernote is one of the most popular note-taking apps around. However, it does a whole lot more than just hold your notes. There’s a bin-full of apps that Evernote has, one of which is Evernote Hello — an app that helps you remember the people you meet, and it received a big update today that gives users passcode lock capabilities, better business card scanning, and improved contacts.

While you can scan business cards in the regular Evernote app, Evernote Hello is specifically built for it. The app can connect to Facebook and LinkedIn to automatically build profiles of the people whose business cards you scan. The update includes flash controls, as well as “a number of improvements and adjustments” for iPhone 4 users.

Evernote Hello has also added passcode lock capabilities, but it’s sadly only available to premium users. However, that could be reason alone to opt for the premium version of the app. Privacy and security are all the rage these days, and you probably don’t want curious eyes taking a peek through all of your Evernote contacts.

Other than that, Evernote added a host of other improvements, such as numerous bugfixes and general performance enhancements to the app. They also added the ability to let you update the Title and Organization fields for your Hello Contacts, making it easier to tell who’s who while browsing through your contacts.

New Evernote For Windows Phone Version Now Available

New Evernote For Windows Phone Version Now AvailableIt was just a couple of days ago when we heard that Evernote announced Evernote 5 for Android, so where does that leave us folks who prefer to side with the Windows Phone platform? Well, version 3.0 of Evernote for Windows Phone is now available, and it certainly brings with it a slew of changes not to be trifled with. After all, Evernote CTO Dave Engberg did mention in the past that the average revenue, per user, from its Windows Phone users was actually more than the larger Android user base.

One of the new features would be Shortcuts, letting users jump to any frequently accessed note, notebook or log in a jiffy. Creating a shortcut is as simple as making a long tap on any of those items, where said shortcut will then appear on the Home Screen. These shortcuts can sync across platforms, as they are available on Mac, Android and Windows Phone, so that all shortcuts created on a certain platform too, will appear on the other platforms – how neat is that? Other features include a tag list, the creation and editing of checkboxes, Notebook Stacks, and premium Evernote users have the advantage of accessing Document Search in the Windows Phone app. Go on, give it a go and let us know how your experience is like!

Evernote for Windows Phone gets refined UI, document search and more in 3.0 update

Evernote for Windows Phone adds refined UI, checkboxes, livetile shortcuts and document search in 30 update

Evernote’s getting a version 3.0 overhaul for Windows Phone that updates the app with some majorly welcome improvements. Now, users that launch the note-taking app will be greeted by two UI refreshes: a simplified homescreen that gathers all your necessary tools for quick access at a glance and a more compact tag list that’s easier to navigate and displays more results. The Evernote team’s also added the ability to create checkboxes, group notebooks by “stacks” and pin live-tile shortcuts by long-pressing on tags, notes or notebooks; shortcuts that can be synced across various platforms (i.e., Mac, Windows Phone and Android). And for die-hard organizational freaks that pay for the premium product, the app now features document search — useful for parsing attached MSWord, OpenOffice or iWork docs. The update’s live right now, so it should hit your WP device soon. Or if you’re one of the uninitiated, now’s a good time to make the jump and connect your life with the cloud.

Evernote for Windows Phone updates with redesign, improved tags, and more

Windows Phone users who are yearning for a better Evernote experience on their mobile devices are now in luck. The app just received a major update today that comes with a complete redesign, as well as a slew of new features, including improved tag lists, stack support, and a more user-friendly interface.

wp_home

The home screen has been redesigned in a way that gives you quick access to the features you’ll most likely need when you boot up the app, including creating a new note and searching through notes. The home screen redesign also includes a small button at the top of the screen that quickly gives you access to your account information.

The update also includes shortcuts, which let you quickly jump to anything in your note collection that you access most frequently. All you have to do is long tap on any item and it will then appear on the home screen of the Evernote app. Currently, shortcuts are only available on OS X, Android, and Windows Phone, and they also sync across platforms.

wp_tags

As for the improved tag system, it’s a lot more compact this time around, which allows you to see more tags on the screen without scrolling up or down. Furthermore, the update includes a quick way for you to jump to tags by the letter they begin with. It cuts down on the amount of scrolling you have to do, and it’s a quicker way to jump to the tag you need.

The update also brings Evernote’s Document Search, which is actually a feature only for Premium users, but it’s available for free to Windows Phone users. It indexes any attached Microsoft Word, iWork, or OpenOffice files so that documents show up in your search results. Other than that, the new update includes Notebook Stacks support, checklist support, and a handful of bugfixes and general performance improvements. Evernote is a free download, and the update is available now in the Windows Phone store.

Springpad note-taking service gets interface overhaul, now an even worthier rival to Evernote

Springpad notetaking platform gets web interface overhaul, now an even worthier rival to Evernote

Springpad may lack Evernote‘s commercial clout, but it makes up for it in a number of ways — not least with free-of-charge features like offline access from its mobile apps (which certain rivals charge for) and Pinterest-style sharing options. The interface hasn’t been a particular strong point, but that could be about to change as version 4.0 has just gone live for at least some users of the web interface. The new UI centers everything on three key buttons along the top:

  • Springs — which gives you immediate access to your latest notes, regardless of which device you made them on
  • Notebooks — for organizing your notes into projects
  • Search & Do — which, needless to say, lets you search your notes, but also suggests activities based to-do tasks you’ve created.

The same, simplified philosophy is due to hit Springpad’s iOS and Android apps soon, although there’s no sign of that happening just yet. In meantime, check out the web interface for yourself at the source link.

Evernote 5 For Android Announced

Evernote 5 For Android AnnouncedEvernote 5.0 for Android has just been announced, and of course with this spanking new update, you will be able to expect your fair share of features to accompany it. For starters, there is the all new camera that helps you remember precious moments in a blow-by-blow account, letting you capture those tender moments without having to leave the camera. With its new Multi-shot Camera, you are able to capture multiple photos, followed by annotating them within a note.

Page Camera is more or less a feature that transforms your mobile device into a pocket scanner. All you need to do is ensure this mode is selected, and you can then save physical documents and papers in Evernote. To do so, align the page using the on-screen rectangle, snap a photo, and the app will do its bit to check out the page’s edges, removing shadows along the way and improving the overall contrast for better readability. With the recent introduction of Google Keep, how do you find this latest release from Evernote? Will it help them maintain their market share, or will they continue to slip further behind in due time?

Evernote 5 hits Android with revamped camera, shortcuts and tweaked UI

Evernote 50 comes to Android with revamped camera, shortcuts and tweaked UI

Evernote has finally brought its Android client up to par with its iOS counterpart, pushing it to version five. The update, which just hit the Play store, includes a mild face lift that offers more contrast between notes and other UI elements, as well as a few new icons with a bit more depth and detail. The visual tweaks aren’t particularly exciting, though. What has us rushing for the update button are all the new features, like the completely revamped camera interface. You can now take several images and add them all to a note in one shot. While a dedicated “page” camera helps you get the best results when snapping photos of hand-written missives by boosting contrast and removing shadows. Of course, the company thinks that feature works particularly well when paired with its branded Moleskin notebooks, but those are purely optional. The results from the couple of quick snapshots we took were bright clear and as legible as could be expected. Unfortunately there are continued issues with Evernote’s text recognition, which tends to be slow for non-premium users.

Evernote for Android updates, 1 year premium service free for Deutsche Telekom users

Big news on the Evernote front today. The popular note-taking app received a hefty update on Android, and the company also announced a partnership with European wireless carrier Deutsche Telekom that would see all of the carrier’s customers eligible for one year of Evernote Premium for free, which is a 40-euro value (approximately $52).

evernote

If you’re a mobile, landline, or broadband customer with Deutsche Telekom, you can enjoy a full year of premium service with Evernote, which comes with a handful of exclusive features, including more bandwidth to upload various notes and more-comprehensive note history and sharing features. Furthermore, current Evernote Premium users can tack on that free year to their account easily.

The offer officially begins today and runs through September 25, 2014. That’s right, you have until late next year to become a Deutsche Telekom subscriber and take advantage of your one free year of Evernote Premium — more than enough time to let your current contract with another provider run its course so that you can switch over.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like T-Mobile users in the US can take advantage of the offer (since T-Mobile is owned by Deutsche Telekom), and it seems only European customers have access to the deal. As for the update to Android, it’s more up to tune with the iOS version, bringing better camera features and a redesigned user interface, making it easier to sift through notes and create new ones. The update is available now in the Google Play store.

Evernote premium adds document search, Deutsche Telekom customers get one year free subscription

Evernote's premium tier adds document search feature, Deutsche Telekom customers get free subscription for a year

Evernote’s premium package adds a bunch of extra features to the online jotter if you’re willing to pay the price. Now though, if you’ve got a mobile, fixed-line or broadband contract with Deutsche Telekom, a deal between the companies means you’ll be able to skip that 40 euro annual charge (around $52) and enjoy the power-user suite free for a year. Don’t get down if you’ve already forked out, though, as current premium subscribers can just tag that extra year onto the end of their cycle. In addition, Evernote has added another feature for premium users worldwide it calls “Document Search,” which’ll rifle through various note-attached files created in MS Office, iWork or OpenOffice. If you happen to be on Deutsche Telekom’s books, you can sign up for your free premium account at the link below. Then again, you’ve got until the back end of September 2014 to claim, so you could always clip this and get to it later.
