There’s really no practical reason anyone needs to own a high-powered green laser pointer (sorry stargazers, not buying it) but that doesn’t make them any less desirable. Especially now that Wicked Lasers has just revealed the Evo which can be customized and controlled via an app on your Android or iOS smartphone.

A Columbus, Ohio woman found that her HTC Evo Shift had branded her after overheating while it was under her waistband. The woman, Jennifer Grago, reported that she was using the phone’s FM radio while she did yard work.
“I didn’t have pockets so I just put the phone in the band of my sweats. Seemed like an alright option… I felt my phone getting warm so I moved it and trucked on. Figured sweatpants and 70 some degrees was a factor. Went to move it again and it hurt like a #%&@! and skin with it. I swear to god I almost passed out,” she wrote.
Best Buy, where she purchased the phone, told her that phones need “correct ventilation” and should be placed in form-fitting casing.
The phone left a clear outline of the casing on her skin. Phones, which are in essence compact radios, can easily overheat for various reasons but for a device to overheat so egregiously is frightening. Any phone, in the right conditions, can overheat. However, in this case, the device battery was faulty, a problem that was came to light when the FM radio app was running for too long. Devices like the iPhone can overheat when radio-heavy apps like Maps and Pandora run too long but they rarely get hot enough to burn skin. The Evo Shift is two years old and is currently available for free with contract on Sprint’s network.
Not to be outdone by that red Galaxy S III over at AT&T, Sprint has confirmed that its inadvertent ad posting wasn’t just a fluke: it’s bringing out a white version of the EVO 4G LTE. Strictly speaking, it’s more of a aluminum-with-white-accents trim, but we’ll let that slide given that the back and kickstand are now decidedly less smudge-prone. The white EVO will cost as much as that Galaxy S III variant (and the black EVO) at $200 on a contract. Sprint will start selling the white hue on July 15th — and unlike AT&T, it should have phones on shelves rather than leave customers to online window shopping.

Are you a Sprint customer with a penchant for LTE technology and white handsets? If so, listen up. Intel leaked to blog TechnoBuffalo seems to indicate that the Now Network’s very first LTE-toting handset will be hitting store shelves, in snow white, on July 15th; obviously, we’re talking about HTC’s latest spin on the EVO, the EVO 4G LTE. The albino set, much like its hued brethren already in market, will set you back $200 with a signed two-year commitment, or can be had for $550 contract-free. As an added bonus, it looks like Sprint will also be serving up a buy-on-get-one-free offer on Samsung’s Epic 4G Touch. Purchasing one 4G Touch — scheduled to get Ice Cream Sandwich in the near future — for $99 on-contract will allow you pick up a second set for the always attractive price of $0. Any takers?
