Skullcandy takes another shot at gaming headsets, quietly reveals SLYR, PLYR 2 and PLYR 1

SkullCandy takes another shot at gaming headsets, quietly reveals SLYR, PLYR 2 and PLYR 1

Giving you the option to Edit your own Aviator headphones isn’t the only news the fashionable folks at Skullcandy had up their sleeve for the end of 2012; with a bit of help from Astro Gaming (a recently acquired asset), it’s also taking another stab at gaming headsets. The company’s touting three new models: SLYR, PLYR 1 and PLYR 2, all of which were quietly detailed on its site within the last week. While Astro caters its full-on gaming audio systems (A30, A40 and A50) above the $200 mark, these Skullcandy-branded headsets essentially bring the ethos of those models to more wallet-friendly prices point of $80 to $180 — not to mention in closer competition with the likes of Turtle Beach and Tritton. Most notably, Astro was quick to highlight to us that Skullcandy’s new batch of gaming-focused earblasters have been created from the ground-up, unlike its models passed which were just tweaks to its existing — and less than well-received — headsets. Curious for the initial details on these latest gaming audio aids? Lucky for you, we’ve got it all listed just past the break.

Verizon sends invitations to closed trial of FiOS TV app for iOS with live streaming

Verizon sends invitations to closed trial of FiOS TV app for iOS with streaming

Want to know the definition of frustration? Try being teased with a FiOS TV app that supports live streaming, only to be denied when the app shows up. The end to that (admittedly mild) form of torture may be in sight. Engadget has learned through a tip that Verizon is sending invitations among a limited group to test a new FiOS TV iOS app with the usual schedule browsing, DVR control… oh, and live TV. Flex View On Demand videos and local media should be on tap as well, although it’s not clear whether or not any of the options will require an active link to Verizon’s fiber or cellular networks to watch. The trial leaves some time to go before we’re tuning in through a bedside iPhone 5; even so, it suggests the gap between hope and reality is about to close.

These Cool USB Typewriters Can Type on Your Screen and on Paper at the Same Time [Video]

Jack Zylkin has created something really cool: a hack to turn any kind of vintage typewriter in a normal keyboard for tablets and computers. One that actually types on paper and works like any keyboard. Watching them in action is nothing sort of fascinating. More »

UK carrier in talks to make Nokia Lumia 920 a British LTE exclusive, says Financial Times

UK carrier in talks to make Nokia Lumia 920 a British LTE exclusive, says Financial Times

We’re hoping for big news from UK carrier partnership Everything Everywhere over the next couple of months — not just the first real LTE service in the British Isles (as if that wasn’t enough), but also new handsets to put that bandwidth to use. According to the Financial Times, the conglomerate is now in talks with Nokia to make that happen, with the LTE-sporting Lumia 920 standing to become an Everything Everywhere exclusive if the negotiations end happily. There’s nothing official to confirm it at this point, but Nokia struggled to win over some carriers with its last batch of Lumias and has now made it clear that it’s open to alternative strategies, just as it already has a special relationship with AT&T in the States. Of course, by the time the Lumia 920 reaches the UK — likely in early November — there could well be another honest-to-goodness 4G superphone in its midst.

Verizon may be planning an HTC Desire 4G LTE

HTC Desire 4G LTE seen on Verizon's system,

Here’s an interesting revelation: we just received an image of Verizon’s internal device management system that indicates the carrier may be collaborating with HTC on another handset. The smartphone — dubbed the Desire 4G LTE — has left us without any details or specs, but it appears to be completely different than the Droid Incredible 4G LTE launched in July. We find the lack of Droid branding slightly curious (and perhaps indicative of a low-end device), though there’s no guarantee that this will be the phone’s final name. Is this Big Red’s version of the Desire X? Perhaps the Desire C? Or is this an exclusive device that won’t be offered elsewhere? We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

Insert Coin: hands-on with the MG, a portable Android gaming solution for kids

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.

MG hands-on

Parent with a smartphone? If your kids are old enough to fiddle with a touchscreen, you’ve probably had your handset nicked. It can be a problem — you need that phone, for calls, emails and Engadget, but your little scamp just can’t get enough of Angry Birds. What do you do? Trust, says PlayMG, but verify. The old phrase ties closely to the core philosophy of the MG — a device the firm is developing specifically for kids who want to play Android games, but are too young for a smartphone. We met with the company’s Taylor Cavanah to get a first hand look at the device and its parental control system.

Nokia Lumia 822 and 5-inch HTC device found in Verizon systems

Nokia Lumia 822 and 5inch HTC device found in Verizon systems

The Nokia Lumia 820 is fresh on everyone’s minds, and rumors of a 5-inch Android device from HTC are floating around, so why not add a couple more pieces of kindling to the fire? We’ve been handed images of Verizon’s device management system (DMD, for short) showing off a couple new devices: the Nokia Lumia 822 (in Gray and White) and the HTC 6435, which we’ve seen leaked as the potential Galaxy Note competitor. While this doesn’t guarantee a surefire launch in any way, phones typically pop up in the DMD a few weeks prior to launch — and it’s good news for two groups of people: Windows Phone fans anxiously awaiting something fresh on the LTE carrier, and phablet fans looking for a device not called the Intuition.

Verizon adding suite of Amazon apps to all new Android devices

Verizon adding suite of Amazon apps to all new Android devices

Most US carriers have been pulling back on the sheer number of pre-installed apps thrown onto the latest Android devices, but Verizon appears to be heading in the opposite direction. An announcement found within the safe confines of Big Red’s internal system indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Stellar wasn’t the only product in the lineup to get officially introduced to a suite of Amazon apps — every single Android device gracing Verizon’s shelves will also get the same treatment. The suite includes apps for the Kindle, Shopping, MP3, IMDb, Audible and Zappos. There was no word on whether the bloatware can be disabled or uninstalled, but since the policy goes into effect today, we should find out pretty soon. We highly doubt this will be a focal point at Amazon’s press event, but we won’t skirt over the possibility of it getting some time on Jeff Bezos’ teleprompters.

As a sidenote, Verizon mentions here that this policy excludes Google experience devices and tablets, which could be cause for speculation that new Nexus devices (including tablets) are en route to the LTE carrier. This wording is pretty open, however, and it may simply be Verizon’s way of covering themselves in case such a device comes out in the future.

Amazon Kindle Fire sequel may have surfaced in logs, points to Android 4.0 and return to dual-core

Amazon Kindle Fire sequel may have surfaced in logs, points to Android 40 and return to dualcore

There have been surprisingly few if any concrete leaks of Amazon’s future Kindle Fire plans, even with the follow-up’s appearance likely just hours away. Thankfully, we may have been given a last-minute peek into the company’s strategy after an Engadget reader tipped us to some unusual activity in an app’s hardware usage logs. At least a pair of hits have come from a new device identifying itself as “AmazonKFTT” instead of the much plainer “AmazonKindleFire” language attached to the original model. There’s also signs that Amazon has upgraded the OS underneath to Android 4.0.3. We wouldn’t anticipate this particular slate carrying a quad-core chip to tackle the Nexus 7 head-on, though — unless the KFTT variant is just a firmware-updated Kindle Fire with a name change, the next generation should still have at least one dual-core tablet in the range. Here’s hoping there are a few more surprises in store by the time Amazon takes the stage on Thursday.

[Thanks, Jared]
