Exclusive hands-on with the LUMOback smart posture sensor

We first met Andrew Chang — one of the co-founders behind LUMOback — when he approached us at the end of our panel at SXSW and offered to show us his smart posture sensor. He was wearing it right then and demoed it for us on the spot. We were impressed enough to stay in touch. Fast forward four months and the device has launched on Kickstarter and already surpassed its $100,000 funding goal. We recently caught up with Andrew to learn a little more about the device’s evolution from mockup to pre-production and to get some hands-on time.

While we didn’t get the chance to wear the smart posture sensor ourselves, Andrew gave us a thorough rundown and brought along various iterations of the device which you’ll find in the photo gallery below. LUMOback is an 8.5mm thick appliance roughly the size of a credit card that’s worn like a belt and rests against your lower back. It’s packed with sensors, a vibration motor, an iOS-compatible Bluetooth 4.0 LE radio and a Li-Ion battery which provides about 4 days of operation on a charge. The only visible components are a single capacitive button, an LED and a micro-USB charging port. It’s splash resistant and features an adjustable elastic strap.

The hardware may be interesting, but it’s the software that really makes LUMOback useful. Paired with an iOS device over Bluetooth, the smart posture sensor monitors if you’re running, walking, standing, sitting or laying down. When you’re standing or sitting, it knows if you’re slouching and optionally alerts you by vibrating. It even measures how much you’re slouching and to which side, and knows if you’re laying on your stomach, back, left or right side. Best of all, the app logs your posture over time, gives you feedback, and lets you journal how you feel. There’s a social networking component as well, and you’re able to share some of that information with others.

Andrew and his team are still tweaking the hardware and the software (nothing we saw is finalized yet), but the LUMOback smart posture sensor should cost between $100 and $125 when it ships this fall. Hit the break for our hands on video, and be sure to check out the screenshots gallery below.

Optimus LTE II makes a cameo on Verizon as LG VS930

Oh hello there, LG VS930. This handset — which was caught in the wild by Mr. Blurrycam’s cousin, Ms. Quickiecam — looks an awful lot like an Optimus LTE II for Verizon. This makes even more sense when you consider that its predecessor, the VS920 aka. Spectrum, recently received end-of-life status. According to the anonymous tipster who sent us these pictures, the phone will ship with the following features:

  • Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 SoC
  • 4.7-inch “True HD IPS” display (1280 x 720 pixels)
  • 16GB of built-in storage
  • Global radio support (GSM/UMTS/CDMA/LTE)
  • NFC (it comes with programmable tags)

There’s no word on whether the VS930 will inherit the Optimus LTE II’s 2GB of RAM [see update below] or the VS920’s branding — Spectrum 2 perhaps? We’ll keep you posted when we find out more, like pricing and availability. In the meantime, take a look at the gallery below for some closer shots.

Update: More information is coming to light about the VS930, including a possible July 13th launch and the service manual (PDF link), which contains a ton of photos and information. The 9.2mm (0.36-inches) thick handset features 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel autofocus camera.

More Google Glass details experimenting with connectivity options, control possible via voice

While Vic Gundotra wasn’t willing to talk Glass in our run-in here at Google I/O, a few others were. In speaking with folks from Google, we learned a few new details about the project, while confirming some whispers that we’d heard floated in the past. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Engineers are currently ‘experimenting’ with connectivity options. Existing prototypes — including those worn in the skydiving stunt this morning — do not have any sort of built-in WWAN connectivity.
  • While it’s possible that a 3G / 4G module could end up in production devices, the general idea is that latching onto nearby WiFi hotspots or relying on a wireless tether with your smartphone will be the primary way that Glass gets its data to the web.
  • Controlling Glass will eventually rely on a mixture of inputs: it’ll recognize voice commands, while also taking cues from the right sidebar. There’s a touch-sensitive pad on there that’ll understand gestures.
  • It’s entirely probable that Glass will also be able to be controlled via one’s smartphone, but physical inputs will be the preferred ones.
  • Glass has an accelerometer and a gyroscope, enabling wearers to tell Glass what to do by nodding, shaking one’s head, etc. (For what it’s worth, we’ve seen similar demoed by NTT DoCoMo.)
  • The internal battery sits just behind the ear on the right side; the capacity and longevity weren’t confirmed, though.
  • Glass will be able to record locally, but the idea is to have ‘most everything’ streamed live to the web; it’s the “live, right now!” nature of Glass that Google intends to push as one of its differentiating factors.
  • In an area where wireless data isn’t available (like a remote National Park or a hospital room that forbids phone usage), storing video locally would be possible for uploading later.

We also confirmed that the team is playing around with various colors, with orange, white, black and blue editions being sported here at I/O. Whether or not all of those hues make it to market remains to be seen, of course, but we’re adequately jazzed about the possibilities.
