Most printer news these days involves expensive 3D models designed to create almost anything from melted plastic. But Cricut’s new Explore model still deals with paper, just not how your inkjet at home does. Like its predecessor, using a small blade on its ‘print head’ the Explore can actually slice up a page however you want. But this new model also introduces the ability to draw any design using a marker of your choice.

While iOS has continued to tout its lead in native tablet apps over other platforms, there are a few cases where it lags and now Foursquare is one of them. A new update to the Android app features a new map browsing experience for tablets and large screen phones, plus improvements to the Explore feature. On the other hand, iPad users still have to deal with a stretched out version of the iPhone app for their check ins and discovery, although a fresh update there tweaks search suggestions and spellcheck in Explore. This isn’t the first go round for a tablet optimized Foursquare experience on Android as the Sony Tablet S had its own app, although that was built by a third party and not fully featured.

The folks at Foursqaure have just pushed out version 5.5 for their iOS app, and it packs a redesigned Explore section that crams more recommendations onto a device’s screen. While the new condensed place listings make better use of display real-estate, they still highlight ratings, friends who’ve visited, specials and tips. Though the fresh release is already up for grabs, Explore doesn’t seem to have undergone its metamorphosis quite yet. Foursquare just launched a redesigned desktop interface that everyone, not just members, can use for local listings and business recommendations. The company has been on this trajectory for awhile now, especially with the latest Explore map that provides a more tailored search experience for logged-in users. This is all in line with co-founder and CEO Dennis Crowley’s promise that Foursquare is more than just a simple social service; that it serves as a discovery and recommendation engine much like Yelp or Google. Leveraging over 3 billion check-ins and 30 million tips from its community of nearly 25 million members, the New York-based firm is confident it can offer reliable recommendations to the general public. It’s still beneficial to join up — you get personalized filters and access to that handy mobile app — but it’s no longer necessary if you just want know where to get a quick sushi fix.

As NASA promised, Curiosity has stopped at the quarter pole toward its first scientific destination to test its robotic arm and attached scientific instruments. After 100 yards of driving, the rover extended its 7-foot limb, and will now spend six to ten days checking its predetermined positions and range of motion. That will ensure the appendage is ready after surviving the chilly vaccuum of space and subsequent setdown, and will let its minders see how it functions in the unfamiliar Martian gravity and temperatures. The JPL scientists in charge of the six-wheeler will also peep the Mars Hand Lens Imager and made-in-Canada Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer to warrant that they’re up for all the geology to come. If all goes well, the rover will start scooping, drilling and analyzing in earnest when it hits Glenelg, then Mount Sharp — so, we’d limber up first before tackling all that, too.

Now that Curiosity has survived its thrill-a-minute landing and passed an upgrade and physical with (nearly) flying colors, the rover is off to earn its $2 billion keep. The buggy got off to a good start, driving 52 feet towards its first science site “beautifully, just as our rover planners designed it,” according to NASA. The destination, Glenelg, is 1,500 feet away from the now-familiar Bradbury Landing where it first set down, which is pretty far for a rover that treks along at about a tenth of a mile per hour. On top of that, its minders have some stops in mind to test instruments — meaning it’ll arrive there in about two weeks. Once at Glenelg, Curiousity will scope the unusual geology of the region, though its principal destination for science is Mount Sharp, a relatively vast six miles away. Don’t worry about it running out of gas, though — it’s nuclear power supply will last a full Martian year, or 687 earth days.
