Meizu MX 4-core review

Meizu MX 4-core review

If it feels like yesterday you read our in-depth review of the dual-core Meizu MX, you’re not too far from the truth. In reality, it’s been just over seven months and we’ve already moved onto the smartphone’s quad-core sequel, aptly named the Meizu MX 4-core. Not only is it easy to confuse the two phones by name, but good luck trying to tell which one is which. Indeed, the two handsets are quite similar both inside and out, with the exception of some improvements in a couple rows on the ‘ol spec sheet.

The biggest surprise isn’t necessarily the speed with which the company cranked out a second MX, and it’s not even the reasonable price (HK$3,099, or US$400, or the 32GB version, and HK$4,099 / US$530 for the 64GB). Nope, it’s seeing Meizu, a manufacturer known for its copycat products, evolving into a relevant player beyond its native China. So how does this latest effort stack up? Read on to find out.

Who Wants a Quad-Core Computer for $130? [Guts]

When Raspberry Pi released their diminutive, ARM-based PC for $35, people were rightfully chomping at the bit to get their hands on something so cheap and small and hackable. But the 700 MHz, single-core ARM 11 processor it wasn’t exactly a powerhouse. Enter Hardkernel’s ODROID-X, which packs a quad-core Samsung Exynos chipset on a 3.5 inch motherboard. More »

ODROID-X trumps Raspberry Pi with quad-core CPU

The Raspberry Pi made quite a splash by offering a cheap way of computing to students or developings using a 700Mhz ARM11 processor. Now a Korean company has created a similar board utilizing a much more powerful quad-core Exynos processor from Samsung. The ODROID-X will clock the CPU at 1.4Ghz and come with 1GB of RAM, a Mali-400 GPU, six USB ports, an Ethernet port, an SD card slot, micro HDMI, and microphone/headphone jacks.

It’s a very compact solution too at 3.5 by 3.7-inches. Naturally, the processor is compatible with Android, and Ubuntu can also be booted using the board, something that the Raspberry Pi can’t claim. We’ve seen various USB sticks running Android making the rounds, plus smaller media players based around Cortex-A9 processors that run Android too, so this new ODROID-X board should fit quite nicely into that category of computing.

Still, you’ll be paying a lot more for this than you would the Raspberry Pi. While the Pi cost $35, the ODROID-X comes in at $129. Then there’s the matter of putting it in some sort of casing and booting software your software of choice, but it might be an interesting option for resellers hoping to sell a cheap yet powerful media player or mini Android computer.

Samsung Galaxy S III LTE with quad-core Exynos comes to three Korean carriers July 9th

Samsung Galaxy S III LTE with quadcore Exynos comes to three Korean carriers July 9thWhile in the US, our LTE-equipped Galaxy S IIIs are packing dual-core Snapdragon S4 processors, the (so far) Korean-only Galaxy S III LTE that combines the quad-core Exynos processor of the international model with high speed data finally has a release date — July 9th. Samsung’s post indicates three carriers (SK Telecom, KT and LG U+) are lined up for the launch and confirms that the battery will remain at 2,100 mAh along with 2GB of RAM and DMB TV tuning. Having everything will likely come at a price of battery life since the quad-core CPUs are not as well integrated with LTE so far, but those willing to compromise for more cores (despite the dual-core Krait’s not-at-all shabby performance) will likely look on with envy.

Lenovo LePhone K860 gets Samsung Exynos quad-core chip and Android 4.0

According to Japanese blog “Blog of Mobile“, the Lenovo LePhone K860 has been approved by China’s ministry of Industry and Information Technology (the equivalent of our FCC, we assume). From a site linked to the Chinese government (login required for the good stuff), some interesting information can be dug out.

If we believe the reports, the Lenovo LePhone K860 uses a quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412 chip at 1.4GHz, and comes with Android 4.0x. The display is said to be a huge 5″ one with a 720p (1280×720) resolution, although there is no mention of what “type” of display this would be. Cameras are 2 Megapixel for the front, and 8 Megapixel for the rear – which also comes with a dual-LED flash.

The phone seems fairly large and heavy with dimensions of 143.6 × 74.5 × 9.6mm for 185g (!). This is no small handset. In theory the handset will be released In August.

This one isn’t fully official just yet, but Blog of Mobile has turned up some pictures and specs for a new Lenovo LePhone K860 that would appear to one-up the company’s existing offerings. Perhaps most notably, this one is said to pack a quad-core, 1.4GHz Exynos 4412 processor (the same found in some variants of the Galaxy S III), along with a 5-inch screen boasting a 1280 x 720 resolution. Otherwise, you’ll apparently get a 2 megapixel camera up front and 8 megapixels ’round back, 1GB of RAM, and Android 4.0 for an OS (no mention of a 4.1 upgade). No indication of a price, but it looks like it will be hitting China in August.

[Thanks, FT]
