Facebook event to reveal “real” Android app (not a phone)

If you’ve been following the Facebook press events that have occurred over the past couple of years, you know one thing is rather apparent: they love to hold press conferences. Zuckerberg and the Facebook crew have held press conferences for everything from the opening bell on their IPO top an announcement about possible Facebook couponing. Here’s the long and short it, it being the April 4th Facebook event: if Facebook wanted to make a Facebook phone, they wouldn’t do it like this.

We’ve seen the Facebook phone already. It’s been released by HTC more than once, and rumors of a phone such as this have been swirling for years. The reason people are pumped up about discussing such a device isn’t because they want one, it’s because the idea is so absurd. Why in god’s name would someone create a smartphone dedicated to one single service?

“Anyone for an HTC ChaCha?

Instead you’ve got a Facebook event coming up that will address the fact that there’s been no acceptably solid release of a Facebook app for Android thus far in the social network’s history. What we’ll see is a presentation about 1 hour long with several top Facebook developers talking about how this version of Facebook for Android will be a real, dedicated, just as good as iOS release. And we’ll all go home wondering why Facebook didn’t just send out a press release instead.

Have a peek at the iOS version of Facebook today, then have a look at the Android version of Facebook, then you’ll know what’s being released at the upcoming event. Let us know if you think otherwise!

BlackBerry 10 Gets Facebook And Twitter Update

BlackBerry 10 Gets Facebook And Twitter UpdateThese days, it is no longer enough that your company happens to churn out the most powerful and advanced hardware on the market, if it does not have the relevant software to go along with it. Having said that, the recently introduced BlackBerry 10 platform has been deemed by certain quarters to be BlackBerry’s last chance saloon at making it in the mobile operating system environment, and getting the support of major app developers would be a vital cog in keeping it alive and competitive. Hence, it is good to hear that the BlackBerry 10 will soon receive updated Facebook and Twitter applications to help it keep up with the times.

You will be able to find new features in Facebook for BlackBerry 10, where among them include the ability to locate nearby friends, to be able to save photos from Facebook to the BlackBerry device itself, and even gain from improved photo tagging. Twitter for BlackBerry 10 will also deliver the similar Connect Tab which can be found on other platforms, and users are now able to check out additional content which has been embedded within Tweets.

Facebook Invites Folks To Check Out Its New Home On Android This April 4th

Facebook Invites Folks To Check Out Its New Home On Android This April 4thLove it or hate it, Facebook is definitely here to stay, and it is a force that ought to be reckoned with. The world’s most popular social network has managed to fend off all other competitors such as Friendster and MySpace, and is set to also enter the world of online ads in an effort to boost its revenue. Well, recent times have seen Facebook make attempts to go around the Google Play Store on the sly when it comes to updating Facebook for Android, while Facebook for iOS has seen voice calling roll out to additional users, albeit slowly but surely. It seems that Android users of Facebook are being left behind in the technological arms race, which is why Facebook attempts to address the issue by sending out invitations for an April 4th event, where they hope to show off its “new home on Android” to the masses.

Just what does this mean? Some folks are wondering whether this could translate to a new Facebook smartphone, while others would dump the hardware route and prefer to concentrate more on the potential Facebook on Android will have on users. What do you think this April 4th event will bring to the table?

Facebook April 4 event invite teases Android-related announcement

Facebook has sent out invitations to an event on April 4 at its place in Menlo Park, California. What’s it about? We don’t know exactly, but the invite says “Come see our new home on Android,” and so the two most likely options seem to be either a new Facebook app or a Facebook-related Android operating system.

Slashgear Facebook Invitation

If the last prospect gets you excited, take heart: some sources have come forward to say a Facebook Phone is on the horizon. The invite is a simple tease – vague title, location, date and time – giving us just enough information to spend the next week guessing. Some sources have surfaced, however, saying that we should expect an operating system.

According to the folks over at TechCrunch, a source who previously advised them to be on the lookout for an April Facebook event has said that Facebook is going to announce an operating system. Specifically, this will be a modified Android operating system that has Facebook functionality woven throughout it, making it a one-stop-shop sort of deal for Facebook loyalists.

And, of course, what is an operating system without some hardware? The sources said that Facebook will likely be pairing its modified Android operating system with an HTC handset, model unknown. Both of those things are rumors at this point, the by-product of unnamed sources, and so don’t take it without a grain of salt. Stay tuned, and we’ll update you next week!

Facebook planning Android related event on April 4th

It looks like Facebook‘s got an Android-related event up its sleeve next Thursday April 4th right here in the Bay Area. So, what’s this about? A major revamp of Facebook’s Android app? An Android-based Facebook phone like HTC’s rumored Myst? Whatever it is, we’ll obviously be there to liveblog the announcement in great detail, so be sure to tune in at 1PM ET (10AM PT). While focusing its recent efforts on features like Graph Search and News Feed, Facebook’s been clear that mobile is a top priority for 2013. Let’s just hope this event brings something more exciting to fruition than HTC’s half-baked Status.

Facebook says paying gamers surge by 24%

When it comes social networking on the Internet, Facebook is the site most people go to. Facebook has been trying all sorts of ways to generate more revenue from the approximately 1,000,000,000 members it has all around the world. One of the ways that Facebook is trying to squeeze money out of these members is with video games that users can pay to play.

A lot of the pay to play video games on Facebook come in the form of games that are actually free to play, but players spend money on virtual goods to make the game more enjoyable and move along more quickly. Facebook has made an interesting announcement that the number of people who are paying to play games via the social network has increased significantly.

Facebook says that the number of paying gamers using its service has increased by 24% compared to a year ago. The social network says that desktop-game players via the social network increased to more than 250 million from 235 million in October. Facebook also notes that it has paid a total of $2 billion to developers during 2012.

Facebook makes money on games by taking a percentage of the fee gamers pay. Facebook has also stated that over 100 developers generated more than $1 million each in revenue from Facebook during 2012. While Facebook is making more money off gamers, the company isn’t holding back on its other revenue-generating plans. Facebook recently announced an expansion to its Facebook Exchange service allowing advertisers to target users based on web browsing history.

Facebook improves mobile app install ads for developers

Facebook has improved its mobile app install ads service to allow developers to reach a much more specific user base with their ads. The mobile install ads service is a great tool for developers to make their mobiles apps more well known to the world. Many developers have seen their mobile apps downloads increase phenomenally after using the service. Social Quantum, an international game developer, saw its app become the #5 grossing app in the US within less than a month after using the service.

With the new and improved features for the service, developers are now able to target more specific mobile users. They can create ads that target only the specific versions of Android and iOS devices. So if they only want to target users who have iOS 5 devices, or Android 4.2 Jelly Bean devices, they can now do so. Developers can also target their ads towards a more general category as well, such as “Only Android 2.3 users and up”. They can also choose to only target users with WiFi only devices, such as iPod Touches, Android tablets, and iPads.

The updated mobile app install ads service can be used in conjunction with Facebook’s Ads Create Tool. The tool provides all of the customizations in the previous paragraph, along with other options to select from. For example, you can choose to direct your mobile app install ads to only one gender, to only people with specific interests, or even only to people who satisfy a specific criteria (such as having a family).

These new features will most definitely be a great draw for many developers, especially the game developers that Facebook very desperately wants. Facebook wants to attract as many game developers to its network as possible. It wants to create a powerful gaming network that will appeal to casual and hardcore gamers alike. Facebook enticed developers by showing off how much money developers made off its network, and how many users interacted with their apps.

Facebook Tests Targeted Ads In News Feed

Facebook Tests Targeted Ads In News FeedA company like Facebook certainly needs to find ways to generate revenue, and with the humongous user base that it has, that should not be too much of a problem for them. In fact, ads in Facebook have started to creep in for some time now, in subtle ways, and here we are with the world’s largest social network testing out targeted ads in the News Feed, although it is not every one who will experience these ads, only a bunch of folks as Facebook tests its Exchange ad delivery system.

Facebook posted earlier in the day, “Allowing advertisers to reach people in News Feed is important because people spend more time in News Feed than any other part of Facebook.” Right now, advertisers were relegated to feature standard ads in the right-hand side bar of Facebook on a desktop or notebook, but now they are able to do the same when it comes to ads in the News Feed, now how about that? Mobile users should be pleased to know that there were no advertising changes made for mobile clients, or those could very well be in the pipeline but have yet to be announced.
