Facebook game developers made $2.8B in 2012

Executives from Facebook have revealed that game developers generated around $2.8 billion in revenue last year. Sean Ryan, Facebook’s Director of Game Partnerships, spoke at the Game Developers Conference trying to entice more developers to join Facebook’s gaming platform. Ryan stated, “Anywhere in the games business we are investing heavily.” Ryan rolled out a bunch of impressive statistics to get more developers on board.

The statistics showed that over 250 million people play games on Facebook each month, and that 20% of all Facebook desktop users play games daily on Facebook. In the last month alone, Facebook redirected 263 million clicks to Apple’s App Store and Android’s Google Play store. Since last year, game installations has increased by 75%. Over 200 games on Facebook now each have over 1 million monthly active users. Over 100 developers generated over $1 million last year. There has been a 24% increase of players who pay to play games on Facebook compared to last year.

Facebook is looking to draw even more players to its gaming platform. It’s launching a series of high-end games that it believes will attract even the hardcore gamers. These new games will feature higher-quality graphics, intensive gameplay, and more riveting storylines. They will be completely different than Facebook’s current offering of games like Farmville and Bejeweled.

Facebook is pursuing many routes in order to generate as much revenue as possible. Along with creating a more stronger gaming network, the company is also pursuing new marketing methods that may be able to help it generate more than the $4 million a day it already generates from sponsored stories. One of the new methods is targeted ads placed straight into your newsfeed. There will most likely be more changes coming down the line, so stay tuned.

Facebook brings ads straight to your newsfeed

Facebook is launching a new advertising test feature that will allow advertisers and marketers to bring ads straight to your Facebook newsfeed. The new test feature is part of Facebook Exchange, Facebook’s way of allowing businesses to cater there ads to people based on their online browsing history. The test feature will be rolled out to a small alpha group at first, and will expand over the next few weeks.

The new service will be an add-on to Facebook’s current Page post link ads. Facebook has clarified that while it will be introducing ads directly to users’ newsfeeds, it won’t increase the total number of ads that appear on their page. As of right now, the new newsfeed ads will only appear on the desktop version of Facebook, and the mobile version should be seeing the changes sometime in the near future.

There are only a small set of Demand Side Platforms (DSPs) that Facebook will be working with at first. They include TellApart, MediaMath, and Nanigans, however more DSPs and advertisers will get their chance to take a shot at the service in the near future. While this new service will be an annoyance to many Facebook users, it will be extremely beneficial to both Facebook and businesses.

Facebook users aren’t going to be left out in the cold however. Facebook users should be receiving Facebook’s new newsfeed and timeline (a love/hate relationship) that should bring a nice, cleaner user interface to the social network. Facebook has also implemented conversation threads onto Facebook Pages so that people can carry out much more organized conversations and debates. There are a lot of new changes coming to Facebook soon, and we may probably hear about more new Facebook features soon. Stay tuned.

Facebook Comments Bug Reset Like Counts

Facebook Comments Bug Reset Like Counts You know what they say about Murphy’s Law – anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, or something to that effect. Well, when it comes to a social network like Facebook, we would have more or less expected it to function the way it should, that is, being bug-free and all after all this while of fine tuning. Apparently not, as Murphy’s Law decides to drop by the world’s largest and most popular social network, where a new bug actually temporarily reset Like counts and comment threads on sites that carry its now ubiquitous Like buttons and Comments plug-in.

It is good to know, however, that this is but a temporary situation, as all Like counts as well as comments ought to be restored to the original or most recent state once Facebook has finalized a fix. This particular Facebook comments bug happened on March 25th in the afternoon, according to certain websites, where the majority of those sites had not www URL prefix. Well, all’s well that ends well, I suppose.

Facebook Replies offers threaded commenting for businesses and popular profiles

DNP Facebook introduces Replies threaded commenting for businesses and popular profiles

Starting today, Facebook is launching a new threaded Replies commenting system for users with more than 10,000 followers as well as Pages linked to brands and businesses. By placing the most “liked” conversation logs at the top of its related post, the social network hopes this new addition will improve interactions between groups and their readers. Qualified profiles should be able to opt-in to the feature today, but the company advises that it will be activated for all Pages and profiles with more than 10,000 followers on July 10th. As of now Replies is only supported on the site’s desktop version, but Facebook plans to add this feature to its Graph API and mobile applications. While it’s great to see the popular social network finally pulling its commenting system out of the Dark Ages, we can only imagine the flame wars that will ensue between followers. Moderators, start your engines.

Facebook implements conversation threads into Pages

Facebook has just announced another great new feature that should make commenting and replying on your favorite Facebook Pages easier. The new feature creates comment threads under Facebook posts (similar to the comment threads you see here on SlashGear), so you no longer have to include the @ symbol when you’re replying to only one person. Everything is much more organized and clean.

This new feature improves engagement between websites, page moderators, and their followers. Now celebrities, politicians, and other popular figures can have a more personal conversation with their followers. They can start a Q&A session where they can answer a series of questions asked by followers, similar to Reddit’s AMA threads. The new service also consolidates reply threads with a drop down-esque menu.

Those of you with a Facebook page will be able to opt-in to the new conversation threads feature through your admin page. The option is located in your Manage Permissions section. Those of you that have Facebook pages with over 10,000 followers will automatically be opted into the service. And all Facebook pages will have the service auto-enabled on July 10th, 2013.

Facebook really is making its social network much more efficient and personable. It is planning on implementing hashtags into its service, so that users will be able to find statuses and events surrounding the topic. A new timeline will be rolled out to all users in order to bring a much cleaner interface to your newsfeeds, and Facebook Events have gotten more efficient with its new addition of weather forecasts. What will Facebook come up with next?

Facebook Rolling Out Threaded Comments For Popular Profiles And Pages

Facebook Rolling Out Threaded Comments For Popular Profiles And Pages   Late last year it was revealed that Facebook was working on threaded comments. At that time it was just an experimental feature, though the social network did confirm its existence. It didn’t exactly say when threaded comments feature will be rolled out for its 1 billion plus users. This feature is actually quite useful as it would allow users to reply directly underneath someone’s comment making it easier for everyone to know who is talking to whom. Today Facebook rolled out threaded comments for Pages as well as popular public Profiles that have over 10,000 followers. We can consider this to be a soft roll out for this feature. Even though the feature is only available to them, Pages and popular Profiles will have to opt in for the feature, it won’t be active on its own. It is not known when Facebook will roll out threaded comments for all of its users. What your view on this, as a user, do you believe threaded comments are actually a necessity? Have you been unhappy with the current comments functionality and believe that threading is definitely required? [Image credit: Gizmodo]

Facebook Extends VOIP Calling To The UK

Facebook Extends VOIP Calling To The UKFacebook announced earlier this year that its VOIP service would be launched initially to users in North America. Now the good news is that Facebook has decided to expand their offering and is now offering the same service to Facebook users in the UK. This VOIP feature is part of Facebook’s Messenger app that is available for mobile devices, like the iPhone. Facebook’s VOIP feature acts like a regular voice call, with the ability to leave voice messages in the event that your friend is offline. At this point in time we’re not sure when Facebook will roll this service out to other regions, so we guess you guys will have to be patient for now. In the meantime those in the UK will be able to look forward to this new service/feature.

Facebook Messenger iOS app enables free calling feature for UK users

Facebook Messenger iOS app adds free calling feature for UK users

While Americans and Canadians have enjoyed making app-based voice calls to their Facebook contacts since January, their overseas buddies have missed out — until now. The social network’s iOS Messenger app has just doled out the calling feature to the UK and potentially other parts of Europe too, although we haven’t yet been able to confirm exactly how far and wide the update reaches. It’s worth noting that the feature isn’t enabled on the Android iteration yet, either. The new calling service isn’t powered by Skype this time, although it works in a similarly uncomplicated way, with the ability to leave voice messages with any busy users. According to Pocket-lint, this is an experimental version, warning that you might experience a few bugs and glitches as you play around with it, but hey, you’re getting free calls to (most of) your friends, barring any data charges. We’ve tested the new feature and it’s working for several of our UK editors over both WiFi and 3G, but if you haven’t already picked up the messaging app yet, you can grab it at the source below.
