Facebook Reportedly Launching Cold Storage Servers For Your Old Photos

Facebook Reportedly Launching Cold Storage Servers For Your Old PhotosMost of us tend to upload photos onto Facebook on a daily basis, whether it be photos of our food, or outings with friends and family. However have you noticed that while you might be uploading new photos consistently, how often do you actually go back and look at old photos that might have been uploaded say half a year ago? Personally I do go back to old photos once every few months just to reminisce, but having all those old photos sitting there just isn’t very efficient as far as managing data is concerned. This is why a report from the Oregonian has revealed that Facebook is supposedly gearing up to launch three new “cold storage” facilities at its Prineville, Oregon data centers.

Unlike Facebook’s typical servers which are always on, these servers will instead be on standby, making it perfect for older uploaded photos. Obviously there will be some downsides to putting photos in cold storage and slower access might be one of them, but the upside is that this would help lessen the amount of power Facebook’s servers would need to consume and manage data more efficiently which could help with loading times and performance. It’s hard to tell just how slow accessing these older photos might be, or if the drop in speed will be noticeable, but the report has suggested that the first server will be going live this Fall, so we guess will just have to wait to find out.

Facebook Says Sorry To 104-Year Old Marguerite Joseph Due To Age Restriction

Facebook Says Sorry To 104 Year Old Marguerite Joseph Due To Age RestrictionThe folks over at Facebook do seem to be involved in some sort of interesting human interactions lately, as we did cover the story on how police used Facebook to inform the tragic news of a son’s death to his mother. Having said that, this time around we have an egg fall flat on Facebook’s proverbial face, as a 104-year old Michigan grandmother, Marguerite Joseph, was unable to input her birthday due to an over age restriction.

Facebook has since stepped forward to issue an apology to this grandmother, as Marguerite needed to lie about her age when it comes to jumping aboard the social network bandwagon. An interview with Local 4 saw Marguerite Joseph’s granddaughter mention that Facebook did not allow her grandmother to list her actual age, as Facebook would change the birth year of 1908 to 1928. Guess she remained forever young at 99 on Facebook for the past two years, and Facebook spokesperson Andrew Noyes did mention, “We are working on a fix for this and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

Better late than never, no?

Website Used To Hack Apple And Facebook Found

Website Used To Hack Apple And Facebook FoundYesterday we reported that Apple has been the target of Hackers. Apple claimed that the source of the hack was the same as used to hack Facebook. The malware used in both these cases came from a popular forum of iPhone developers called iPhoneDevSDK.

Ian Sefferman, co-founder of the forum explained how his site was used to send out malware” What we’ve learned is that it appears a single administrator account was compromised. The hackers used this account to modify our theme and inject JavaScript into our site. That JavaScript appears to have used a sophisticated, previously unknown exploit to hack into certain user’s computers. We’re still trying to determine the exploit’s exact timeline and details, but it appears as though it was ended (by the hacker) on January 30, 2013.” Said Ian Sefferman. He also said that his team has patched the security hole and that his site is clean and safe to visit and that data from his site was not compromised.

iPhoneDevSDK admin team claimed they had no knowledge of the breach and that they were not even contacted by Apple or any other company. They learnt about the situation, when they read it in the press. The site admins have also reset the passwords of all its users as a precautionary method.

Facebook Used By Police To Inform A Mother About Her Son’s Death

Facebook Used By Police To Inform A Mother About Her Son’s DeathSocial media has become quite useful in our daily lives with several features that have enriched our lives. Gathering people, sending out notices for events, sharing pictures has changed the way we communicate with one another. However Anna Lamb-Creasey is one person who is furious at the police for using the popular social networking website Facebook to inform her of her son’s death.

On January 24th, Ricky Lamb was killed when he got hit by a car and his body was shifted to the morgue. Meanwhile his mother Anna Lamb-Creasey became worried and tried searching for him but didn’t find any sign of him and started contacting hospitals and jails. Police of Clayton County tried to locate her through “traditional methods” and ended up sending her a message on Facebook. Unfortunately the message ended up in her “Other” messages folder, simply because it was sent by a Facebook account run by the name of “Misty Hancock” which is not on the friends list of Lamb-Creasey.

Lamb-Creasey is furious with the police for not getting the message through to her using more conventional methods.  She also believes that the message could have been sent from an official profile which would have been taken seriously.  The intent of the police officer who thought up the idea of sending the message seems good, however the way in which the message was delivered will remain questionable.
