Everything Is Like Facebook [Facebook]

Remember how chairs are like Facebook? Of course you don’t! That ad was super dumb, and you bleached it from your brain just as quickly as you could. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun with other things Facebook might actually be like. Or at least, look silly next to. More »

Facebook Just Made It Harder for Hackers to Jack Your Account [Security]

Facebook just announced it’s partnering with seven new anti-virus companies, in addition to the ones it already worked with. They’ll be offering software in the Facebook AV Marketplace, which lets users download antivirus security software. But the real benefit might be in how they affect Facebook at large. More »

No plans for Instagram for Blackberry 10 according to Facebook

Instagram is no doubt a popular app used to take photos on both iOS and Android, and we can still remember the day when it finally arrived on Android and the big deal that everyone made about it. Well it seems that the fuss people made about the Android version might not happen for Blackberry 10 as Facebook has announced (via VentureBeat) that they have no plans to release Instagram for Blackberry 10. As some of you guys are aware, Facebook bought Instagram awhile back and while Facebook is working on a native app for Blackberry 10, it seems that’s the extent of Facebook’s involvement with Blackberry 10.

Of course this does not mean that there won’t be Instagram for Blackberry 10 forever – there is a chance that Facebook could be feeling out the Blackberry 10 ecosystem first before deciding if it might be worth their while to port Instagram onto Blackberry 10. In any case Blackberry 10 is expected to launch in Q1 of 2013, so there’s still a few months for Facebook to change their minds. In the meantime it looks like would-be Blackberry 10 users will need to find an alternative way to capture and upload hipster-like photos.

Prisoners can’t read Facebook pages–even if they’re printed out

Here’s some bad news if you’re a con and you want to keep up with your friends on the outside: if somebody sends you printed-out Facebook pages, they’ll get confiscated. The confirmation comes via Mark Nixon’s appeal, which was rejected by the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Mark Nixon, who is currently incarcerated in a medium-security prison in Pennsylvania, had accomplices send him printed Facebook pages. They were taken away, and he brought a civil rights case in Federal court. He lost, appealed, and then lost the appeal. (more…)

Facebook’s First Ever Ad Gets a Hilarious Toilet-Themed Parody

It’s no secret that Facebook’s not doing so hot ever since they went public. The social network recently hit 1 billion users and to keep their numbers up (and perhaps to try making Facebook more relevant?), they recently released their first ever ad.

facebook parody

Oddly, the ad highlights how Facebook is like a chair. I kid you not. The ad talks about chairs and comes across as one of those artsy-fartsy videos that force you to come to some deep realization at the very end. Throw in doorbells, airplanes, and bridges, and that’s the ad for you in a nutshell.

Here’s the original Facebook ad, in case you haven’t seen it yet:

There’s only one mention of Facebook in the commercial, and the site isn’t featured even once, although that’s understandable considering this is a branding ad. However, the ad leaves a lot of room for ridicule and that’s the route that a lot of people did since it came out. One parody likens Facebook to toilets – you’ll have to check out the clip below to find out why. (Warning: Language NSFW)

Pleased to Meet the Facebook Version of You [Facebook]

Hats off to your laissez–faire attitude about the beautiful dinner you guys cooked up at the beach this summer. I was cracking up at the joke you made in the caption (“Looks like we’re eating outside AGAIN. Oh, well…”) under the snapshot of the gorgeous lobsters. The potatoes looked amazing fading off into the blur of a shallow focal range that ends at the saturated greens and yellows of herbs, and cornbread, and lemon garnish on the left just below where the sunset creates the lens flare that bounces off your icy bottle of beer. You must’ve literally JUST pulled that cold one from the tub or cooler I see there on the right next to your, hello, preternaturally attractive mate (unthinkable that they’re whiling away weekdays toiling over files and phone calls in a room someplace like the rest of us rubes. They could be making in one day what the rest of us are paid in a month if they would just model, already). More »

Firefox introduces preliminary support for Social API, brings your networks into the browser

Firefox introduces preliminary support for Social API, brings your networks into the browser

While you might use Firefox to access your social media of choice already, preliminary support for a new API has been introduced that could integrate key features into the browser itself. The aptly named Social API, will allow developers to embed services into the browser directly, letting you interact with friends and stay updated without having to open new windows, or keep hopping into different tabs. There’s no solid info just yet on how this will manifest itself, or how issues such as security and privacy might be addressed, but with testing beginning soon, we’re expecting the curtain to lift on the finer details soon. Interested developers can head to the source, for the other billion, you’ll just have to wait.

Facebook downtime had nothing to do with Anonymous

Yesterday we talked about downtime at a Facebook that was originally thought to be the result of hackers. The rumor that Facebook was down due to hackers attacking their DNS servers stemmed from a twitter account called Anonymous Own3r the tweeted “I’m attacking Facebook rigth now.” Facebook later admitted that the downtime and nothing to do with hackers.

Facebook noted that it experienced outages across parts of Europe affecting an undisclosed number of users. The outage lasted only an hour according to Facebook. A Facebook spokesman said that the downtime was the result of changes made by Facebook to its DNS servers.

The spokesman says that Facebook was running some traffic optimization tests to determine which of its data centers to route certain users to. Facebook issued an official statement that said the change in its DNS servers resulted in some users being temporarily misrouted. The social network says that it detected and resolved the issue immediately, but a small number of users in Western Europe had issues accessing the site while the DNS information repopulated.

The outages occurred during midday Pacific Standard Time and Facebook claims that everything is running properly today. Facebook wasn’t specific in which Western European countries experienced outages. There were users from Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Norway, and Portugal reporting issues online.
