Facebook Will Change Your Profile to Timeline This Fall, Like It or Not (Updated) [Facebook]

Timeline, Facebook’s hypergraphical profile triumph, has been around for almost a year—and there are still people either ignorant of or averse to the redesign. Tough pokes, says FB: you’re getting switched before the year is over. More »

Facebook Wants to Be Your Instapaper Now, Too [Facebook]

It must be flattering to be Marco Arment, creator Instapaper and pioneer of putting articles aside to read in the bathroom. His app’s imitators are legion, and have grown by a very intimidating one: Facebook. Its “save for later” feature is no Instapaper. But it may not have to be. More »

Microsoft integrates Facebook tagging into Bing search results

There a lot of things that people all around the world search for daily using a search engine such as Google or Bing that could benefit from more personalized results from offered by friends. For instance, if you’re looking for a good Italian restaurant in your city, it would help greatly to know if your personal friends on Facebook know one and have eaten there rather than simply relying on addresses returned in search results.

Microsoft has announced a new feature for Bing that’s actually a very good idea. Bing will now allow you to tag up to five Facebook friends on the search sidebar and share a search you make to get direct input from friends. The question will be posted to your Facebook Timeline automatically and the friends you tag will be notified.

Microsoft has offered several examples of how the feature can be used, and these are examples I think a lot of people can relate to. You could ask friends who have traveled to a vacation spot you plan to visit what they think of the hotel or a beach. You could ask your foodie friends if they have tried a specific recipe, or you can invite friends to a specific location for a get-together using the feature.

This new feature is a small tweak to the social sidebar that Microsoft added to Bing a few months ago. Is this feature interesting to you? I’m not sure we will ever see a similar feature from Google considering how hard the search giant is pushing Google+. Watch the video below to see more details on the new feature for yourself.

Facebook app for iPhone and iPad gets save for later feature

The official Facebook app for the iPhone and iPad is one of the most popular social networking apps available for iOS. Facebook has announced a new feature for the iPhone and iPad mobile apps that people should really enjoy. The new feature is called “save for later” and it allows you to do exactly what the name implies.

The new feature allows you to save all sorts of posts to view later. Each post that you save is placed into its own feed allowing you to scroll through saved posts alone at a later date. This is perfect if you frequently scroll through a long feed from lots of Facebook friends and see things you want to read, but don’t have time. That happens to me a lot and each time the app updates I end up scrolling down the list looking for posts I noticed earlier that I wanted to read.

IPhone and iPad users can save posts with the new feature by holding a finger down on the post until a pop-up shows up that says “save.” After that pop-up displays, you touch the save button, and are done. The posts are placed into a Save folder that’s listed at the bottom of the Facebook app sidebar.

Saved stories are private, so if you save a post from someone on your friends list they won’t know it. If you’re not sure if you have the new feature yet, you should see a notification at the top of the news feed telling you about the feature when it’s available for you to use. I wonder when the Android version of the Facebook app will get this feature.

Facebook for iOS gains a new Save feature

If you’re living the digital age where social networks are prevalent, then chances are you have a Facebook or Twitter app installed on your smartphone. If you’re the type that checks Facebook constantly for news and updates, there probably are times when there is a pretty interesting piece of news or update that you’ll probably want to savor at home or when you have more time to give it a proper read through. Well if you own an iOS device, you’ll be pleased to learn that Facebook for iOS has been recently updated to include a new Save feature that lets users save posts for reading later.

In a way this could be thought of as a bookmark or a favorites, and all you’d have to do is tap and hold a post and it should be saved into your Saved folder. Saves are reportedly private, which means that people won’t know you’ve saved their updates or posts (phew!) and they will have to be manually removed from the Saved folder once you’re done reading them. Are these some of the improvements that the former Apple software engineers are working on for the iOS Facebook app? It’s hard to say but either way if the Save feature is something that you think is incredibly useful, fire up the iTunes App Store and update your  app!

Bing search lets you tag Facebook friends, forces them to Google ‘Bing’

Bing search lets you tag Facebook friends, forces them to Google 'Bing'

Microsoft has already made its “decision” engine get all buddy-buddy with Facebook and Twitter, but now it’s taking the integration one step further. You’ll now actually be able to tag your friends in searches. Why, pray tell, would you need to do such a thing? Perhaps you’ve got a buddy who grew up in Paris and need suggestions for where to eat while you’re visiting. Or maybe you’ve spotted an awesome hiking trail and want others to tag along. Just enter the question in the Bing side bar then tag the appropriate people. The search will show up on your timeline and others can pitch in. Of course, you could always just ask these same people via Facebook message, text or (gasp!) in person. But why would you want to simplify matters? Check out the source for more info and the video after the break.

Facebook introduces a more beautiful way to view photos on timeline

Fresh from its first earnings conference call last week, the social networking giant that is Facebook, has just announced a new feature to its Timeline. Today, users can now enjoy a new photo section that will make viewing photos more enjoyable. Essentially, when users will click Photos at the top of their Timeline, they will be greeted with a mosaic of pictures filling up the page in various sizes and shapes.

Users can also use the menu to find shots that they are tagged in, as well as pictures that they have shared and albums they’ve created. Additionally, Facebook is also introducing a new way to select favorite photos. Users will need to click on a star button that will show up once a picture is clicked to make it stand out. So, if you’re seeing this feature already on your Timeline, please feel free to tell us your thoughts about it. Cheers!

Bing’s New Friend Tagging Feature Is So Cool You’ll Wish It Wasn’t On Bing [Bing]

Facebook photos get massive overhaul

This week if you happen to be perusing some photos on Facebook, you’ll find that the developers behind the layout section of Facebook’s pages have done a bang-up job of making them look all the nicer. What you’ll find is a grid of photos that’s variable in both size and shape, with squares being the dominant figure in the Facebook photo gallery. You’ll integration with this lovely view on your Timeline as well as behind the scenes, and much larger photos are included in the upgrade as well.

Facebook’s photo gallery view upgrade has been revealed to the world today and will be rolled out gradually across the entirety of the world’s Facebook population. You’ll be able to showcase the photos that you like especially, with those photos showing up largest. You can also still, of course, get rid of photos that you’re not so proud of or have recently become less fond of now that you’re in full timeline mode.

This roll-out comes as some of the last Facebook citizens are experiencing the change-over from the previous look of Facebook to Timeline. As this update with photos rolls out gradually, we cant help but wonder if this too will take months, not weeks, to come to everyone on the planet.

For those of you just starting with Facebook, you’ll have both Timeline and this “more beautiful” view of photos right from the start. If you have a problem with this view, be sure to head to the bottom of your Facebook feed to find the Help link to report any malfunctions. Otherwise enjoy, and head to our own timeline right here in this post to catch up with everything Timeline related. Facebook is ever changing, that’s for certain!

Bing search now lets you tag your friends

BingWhile search engines have made it extremely efficient for us to find what we need on the internet, there are times when we just can’t uncover what we need. Instead of having to sift through tons of irrelevant results and promoted pages that make their way to the top – sometimes a recommendation from a friend is all we need. Well, as of today, Bing has made it easier for us to ask our friends when we’re performing a search.

Bing announced today that Bing users can easily tag their Facebook friends when searching. All you have to do is use Bing’s social sidebar and select “Choose friends to notify”. You can then add up to five friends from Facebook to tag in the query, and with your permission Bing will post the search on your Facebook wall, tagging your friends in the process. This way, you and your will be notified and can pitch in to help you what you’re looking for. Who knows, some of you friends could even learn something new from each other. A pretty useful feature if you ask me. Just head over to Bing and start searching today. (more…)
