Facebook to speed up iPhone app, says report

The New York Times is reporting that Facebook’s app on the iPhone is slower than almost any of the other 499,999 apps available for the device. The publication cites the number of customer reviews in the App Store – 21,000 out of 38,000 – rating the app with a single star score. So the folks reportedly convinced two of Facebook’s engineers to speak about the social networking giant’s unreleased products. The engineers, who asked not to be named, allegedly said that Facebook has revamped its iOS app and that it’s geared for one thing which is speed.

Moreover, the said new app is reportedly built primarily using Objective-C, a programming language used to build iOS applications. The engineers said that the Facebook app is currently built using the web-based markup language HTML5. The New York Times said that they were able see the unreleased iPhone application and commented that it’s “blazing fast”. The two Facebook engineers added that the app is currently being tested by Facebook developers and is expected to arrive as an update this summer.

Facebook’s Find Friends Nearby feature falls off the map, leaves buddy locating to other social apps

We’re happy to chat up our Facebook friends on the web, but empowering them to track us down in person makes that virtual social experience feel a bit too real. Perhaps that was the reasoning behind the mysterious disappearance of the company’s new Find Friends Nearby feature, which bit the dust yesterday just as quickly as it first appeared. During its hours-long tenure, the new tracking tab didn’t give precise friend location information, but did provide a list of buddies in an undisclosed vicinity, making it possible for some not-so-top-tier contacts to realize that you’re still in Tulsa, and didn’t actually make that move to Timbuktu. Whatever the reason, Find Friends Nearby is now very much lost, but it could theoretically make its return at any point in the future. For now, you’ll need to return to keeping an eye on acquaintances the old-fashioned way.

Farmville 2 unleashed by Zynga

As the mobile world evolves, so too do the expectations of the public for a new most addictive game of the day – that’s why Zynga has decided to release a whole new version of their smash hit with Farmville 2. If you’re not familiar, the first Farmville game was entirely Facebook-based (at first) and centered around you, the farmer, and your crops and livestock. This new version of the game will be a bit more tuned for future mobile use and will have “3D graphics” which include fully rotate-ready objects galore.

This new Farmville game will indeed also be able to be played via Facebook or straight through Zynga’s own web-based network, as well as through official apps for both iOS and Android. This game will also feature more intensive “crafting” of items, with the creating and harvesting of one item making way for another. This game will be created in hopes that Zynga can recapture the peak power of the first Farmville game which hit its tip back in March of 2010 with 82 million users playing at least once a month.

Zynga also let the world know that they’d be pushing several other titles soon, including but not limited to: Matching with Friends, The Ville, Zynga Elite Slots, ChefVille, and Ruby Blast. Zynga also announced that they’d be partnering with Atari who will be releasing a new game title for its 40th anniversary in a team effort that will shock the world!

Stay tuned for more Zynga action, and check out the timeline below to keep up to date on all things Zynga as well!

This Website Is Telling the World Your Dirty Public Facebook Secrets [Facebook]

The notion of a private secret sounds contradictory, but in the Facebook Age, it makes sad sense. There’s a whole horde of uninformed FB users who broadcast their weed smoking and boss hating for the entire internet. Read it here. More »

Facebook kills off “Find Friends Nearby” feature?

Facebook logoDo you think that Facebook has a penchant to do things quietly on the side? After all, it was reported earlier that Facebook did introduce a “Find Friends Nearby” feature on the quiet, and not only that, there were whispers of discontent across the Internet when Facebook started to change the email address displayed without getting permission from the user. Well, for those who missed out on the “Find Friends Nearby” feature, chances are you would have missed out on it completely, as it is no longer available. Perhaps this has something to do with the social networking giant being worried about the kind of privacy issues that might arise. (more…)

Designer comes up with Facebook-themed ice cream concept

Ever wished you could have a slice of Facebook, but their IPO proved too expensive for your liking? Well now you can, thanks to designer Tomislav Zvonarić who has come up with some rather novel renderings of what he’s calling, the FaceCream Bar. As you can see in the concept above, this delicious, icy treat has been designed after the Facebook logo and to be honest it actually looks pretty tasty! Of course we doubt that Facebook would ever create an ice cream bar of their own, but a little levity on a Tuesday morning to kick the day off couldn’t hurt, right? If you’d like to check out additional renderings, you can head over to the designer’s website for the rest of the pics. So what sort of flavors do you think this FaceCream Bar will offer?

Friendthem sues Facebook over “Find Friends Nearby” feature

Facebook logoNot too long ago, Facebook launched its Find Friends Nearby feature which basically allowed Facebook users to look for friends who might be in the vicinity. However the feature was then pulled, leaving many to wonder why. Some have attributed this feature to being rather “stalker-ish”, but it might have something to do with mobile app developer Friendthem’s lawsuit against Facebook. According to the company’s CEO, he approached Facebook with the idea back in February, so we guess it wasn’t really a coincidence that Facebook decided to launch something similar several months down the line.

The CEO states that the idea was pitched to a Facebook executive who allegedly said, “I really like this idea”. According to their attorney who spoke with the folks at Mashable, “We will proceed with a lawsuit as soon as we confirm the information we have, but we don’t want to do things irresponsibly.” Could that be why the feature was pulled so quickly due to an impending lawsuit, or was it for other reasons? Either way we will refrain from too much speculating for now, so be sure to check back with us in the future as we will keep you updated on its progress.
