Editor’s Letter: Google glass gone wild

In each issue of Distro, editor-in-chief Tim Stevens publishes a wrap-up of the week in news.

DNP Editor's Letter Google glass gone wild

It seems like ages since Sergey Brin staged one of the most dramatic product launches of all time at last year’s Google I/O, guiding a bemused audience through a cavalcade of extreme antics that saw a prototype Google Glass headset delivered to the Moscone Center courtesy of skydivers, BMX riders and mountain climbers. This week, the very first Explorer Editions of Google Glass shipped to lucky recipients through rather more pedestrian means: UPS. Still, those deliveries were received with no less excitement.

These early units are shipping out in waves, with many of the I/O pre-orderers (including this eager editor) left waiting and watching unboxing videos with envy. The first videos of the early editions in action started hitting YouTube en masse, something we’re sure will become increasingly commonplace through the spring. We also finally got the full specs for the thing, including 802.11b/g and Bluetooth connectivity, 16GB of internal storage and a 5-megapixel camera capable of 720p video recording.

Fake ‘Facebook Fashion’ Store Opens In Myanmar

Fake Facebook Fashion Store Opens In Myanmar

Seeing shops open up in parts of Asia that borrow the name of popular U.S. manufacturers is nothing new as we’ve seen this kind of stuff pop up in the past, but today, we see a “Facebook Store” has been opened up in Myanmar.

The Facebook Fashion store is located in Yangon, which is Myanmar’s largest city, and, as you could see by its sign, is a wholesale / retailer. The shop’s sign, shopping bags and price tags all borrow from the popular social media sites’ colors, logo and color scheme. The Facebook Fashion’s shopping bag describes the store as it offering the “best quality with fair price.” Upon closer inspection of the clothing’s price tags, it looks as though all of the merchandise was made in Thailand. Facebook Ports Free VoIP Calling To Android Platform

Facebook Ports Free VoIP Calling To Android PlatformWe do know that Facebook, the world’s most popular social network at the moment, does offer VoIP calls to users of their app on the iOS platform, but it seems that Christmas has arrived slightly earlier this time around, where Facebook ported their free VoIP calling feature from iOS over to the Android operating system today. This particular tool would enable iOS as well as Android users to be able to perform free VoIP-based calls to other iPhone, or as of now, Android-powered Facebook Messenger users, using either 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity to get the job done.

These calls will be initiated using on-screen controls from within individual Messenger conversation threads, and best of all is, you do not need to update the Facebook Messenger app in order to make use of this feature. Having said that, how many of you would want to take advantage of this feature so that you need not eat into your monthly minutes and plans? It would certainly be ideal if you happen to use this as some sort of pseudo “walkie-talkie” service within the same home.

Facebook Updates Windows Phone App To Fix Issues

Facebook Updates Windows Phone App To Fix IssuesIt was earlier today when we brought you word that the Facebook Windows Phone 8 app certainly has issues of its own that it is currently struggling with, where it affected users who ran version 4.2.0.0 of the app, while those who were using the Windows Phone 7.x version 2.7.0.0 of the app were exempt from such headaches. Well, we are pleased to say that the turnaround time taken to “fix” this particular issue has been rather quick, where a latest updated release has enabled it to fix a bug that users have been complaining about.

When you install the latest update, you should not suffer from any crashes to your device when it runs the Facebook app, and with this particular fix, hopefully there will be more positive comments left on the app’s page and also, subsequently, an increase in the app’s ratings. Perhaps comments such as “It is horrible. Please make a better app!”, “Crashes a lot more often since last update”, “I can’t like any pictures without it closing? Can’t unfriend or share anything”, “Not working for me anymore. When I click on a post it takes me back to my phone screen. I enjoyed it til now. Please fix problem”, and “Needs an update” will be a thing of the past.

Facebook launches real-time graphs to highlight its data center efficiency

Image

Curious as to the effect that your poking wars are having on the planet? Facebook is outing power and water usage data for its Oregon and North Carolina data centers to show off its sustainability chops. The information is updated in near-real time, and the company will add its Swedish facility to the charts as soon as it’s built. The stats for the Forest City, NC plant show a very efficient power usage effectiveness ratio of 1.09 — thanks, in part, to that balmy (North) Carolina air.

Facebook rolls out near-real-time public PUE and WUE dashboards for data centers

Facebook has launched public dashboards for its Forest City, North Carolina and Prineville, Oregon data centers, providing easily accessible access to near-real-time Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) information. The dashboards provide continues information that is updated to the minute, also providing a 24-hour set of data and historial view containing the year’s numbers.

Data Center

The reason for the change is a matter of pride, according to the announcement, with a desire to show the efficiency of the data centers. In addition, by providing the information, Facebook says that the centers are demystified, and that such a move follows naturally in line with its sharing of the hardware and building designs. The public now gets a peek at what the data centers’ technicians see daily.

The public dashboards won’t change the annualized averages, which are accessible via the dashboards beneath the near-real-time information. Facebook first made PUE information for Prineville available the second quarter of 2011, eventually rolling out WUE at the same center in mid-2012. Those who follow the dashboards are advised that some “weird” numbers might pop up occasionally because the data centers are still under construction and the variables frequently shifting.

In addition, the dashboards are available for others to use, with Facebook saying that the front-end code will be made open source and available “in the coming weeks”. Those who take advantage of the code once it is made available are encouraged to make changes to it, improving what is already there and providing an overall better experience for everyone.

Jailbreak Tweak Unleashes Chat Heads System Wide On iOS

Jailbreak Tweak Unleashes Chat Heads System Wide On iOS

Recently Facebook released version 6.0 of its mobile app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The new app brought over many features, including Chat Heads, which Facebook had shown off at the Home launch event. By default Chat Heads on iOS are limited to the Facebook app, they can’t pop up anywhere in iOS because of the way Apple’s mobile platform sandboxes apps, this is not the case with Android. However jailbreak tweak developers are known to circumvent many restrictions imposed by Apple, so now there’s a tweak which lets Chat Heads to pop up anywhere in iOS, allowing using to continue chatting with their friends without opening the Facebook app.

The tweak has been developed by one Adam Bell, who is going to release it for free in Cydia by the end of this week. Despite the fact that Facebook app will be running in the background for Chat Heads to work, Adam says his tweak doesn’t drain battery life. He says it took him a couple of hours to make this tweak, the hardest part was to make Chat Heads render on top of everything else.

Google+ Comments Can Now Be Added To Blogger Based Websites

Google+ Comments Can Now Be Added To Blogger Based Websites

It looks like Google is wandering in to Facebook territory, the latter has a comments system that websites owners can add, now the internet search giant has brought over Google+ comments for Blogger based websites. It seems as if Google is just testing the waters, perhaps in the near future they might allow platforms other than Blogger or WordPress to integrate Google+ comments as well. This new comments feature can be activated from the Blogger Dashboard, its purely opt-in and won’t be enforced on all websites based on Blogger.

People commenting on the blog will have the option to comment publicly or privately for their various Google+ circles. While reading comments, users can choose to view all comments, just the top ones or only those comments made by people in their circles. Website owners will be able to engage more of their readers, if someone’s talking about their blog entries publicly on Google+ those comments and replies will also appear on the blog. Older comments on any blog will continue to be displayed in the new widget. Who’s going to try this on their website?

Facebook Home hitting Jailbroken iPhones: Chat Heads first

Today it’s been announced that those working with a Jailbroken iPhone out there in the wild may soon be able to work with the still limited-to-Android Facebook Home feature Chat Heads. While the newest version of Facebook for iOS does include an in-app iteration of the Chat Heads feature for messaging, the build announced today (by unofficial sources, of course), will allow Chat Heads to appear universally, just as it is with Android.

Photo-6-544x500

If you’ll take a peek at our review of Facebook Home as it exists inside Android, you’ll find that the “appear anywhere” feature included in what Facebook calls “Chat Heads” might just be the most universally user-friendly feature of the bunch. While Facebook Home exists as a full home screen replacement app, Facebook Messenger allows you to see messages while you’re inside (or outside) any given app, even if it’s not Facebook.

Have a peek at Facebook’s Chat Heads push to iOS for your iPhone and you’ll find slightly less all-inclusive engagement. Unfortunately this iOS version will still not have the SMS integration available in the Android iteration. Speaking with The Verge, the creator of this particular hack, Adam Bell, confirmed that the process itself isn’t very power-hungry. Bell noted that only when you’re actually literally interacting with the head does it drain power in any notable way – good news!

You’ll be able to access the build that’s making this Chat Heads freedom possible through Adam Bell’s connection to GitHub over the next few days – can’t wait! Meanwhile have a peek in SlashGear’s jailbreak tag hub for more goodies for your hacked-up iPhone. Let us know what you’re into!
