Facebook brings Rovi’s entertainment info database to your profile

Facebook has just partnered up with Rovi Corporation to bring more detailed information regarding the movies, TV shows, and celebrities to its social network. This new partnership will give application developers the option to incorporate Rovi’s services into their apps, so that they can provide seamless integration between their apps and the entertainment database provided by Rovi to create a more “connected experience for consumers”.

Another one of Rovi’s features, Rovi IDs, can also be linked to Facebook Page IDs, so Rovi subscribers can connect to Facebook content when they’re looking up their shows or movies. This new partnership will increase the social aspect of media entertainment. Ime Archibong, Manager of Platform Partnerships at Facebook, says that in the next couple of years, social interaction with movies, TV shows and other forms of entertainment will “grow immensely”.

This new partnership will also help Facebook achieve one of its main goals; ad revenue. Facebook will be able to utilized targeted advertisements by evaluating its users use of Rovi’s entertainment database. Generating revenue is a main driver for Facebook’s way of doing things. In the past, Facebook had also tried to tempt game developers to create games for the social network in order to attract more gamers to its service. It also launched a program where users could message celebrities for a fee.

Rovi offers many, valuable services, including, entertainment data, content protection, industry standard networking, and media management technology for digital entertainment devices and services. While Rovi may not be well known, its services are highly coveted. Last year, Google licensed Rovi’s interactive program guide patent portfolio for set-top boxes, online platforms and mobile platforms. Google used its services to enhance its Fiber TV services.

Facebook reportedly hires former Apple iOS 6 Maps lead Richard Williamson

Facebook reportedly hires former Apple iOS 6 Maps overseer Richard Williamson

Among the people affected by Apple’s iOS 6 Maps debacle was claimed project head Richard Williamson, who was reportedly shown the door at the end of 2012. While the details were never directly corroborated outside of Williamson’s exit in December, he may have found a new home at Facebook: Bloomberg‘s sources say that the director joined the social network’s mobile software division within the past two weeks. We don’t know what (if anything) Williamson might be producing when Facebook has so far declined comment, although there’s no question that he has an appropriate pedigree when he managed interface development for key iOS apps and helped get Safari off the ground. Suffice it to say that the internet giant has plenty of projects that might benefit from his overall experience.

Chat Heads hits Facebook for iOS: we go hands-on

Today the Facebook Home universe has begun to jump in to iOS for the iPhone, starting with Chat Heads and likely stopping there as well. While the Android version of Facebook Home commands your entire smartphone experience from the first lock screen to the place where you launch apps, this update to the iOS version of Facebook simply adds the Chat Heads feature to the app itself. This means you’ll be chatting with your friends from anywhere – just so long as you’re still inside the Facebook app.

What you’ve got here is Facebook’s Chat Heads messaging environment stuck inside the Facebook app itself – as long as you never leave the Facebook app, you’ve got the same thing as you’d have been working with in Android (essentially). See our full Facebook Home review for Android right this minute! While the Android version of Facebook’s messenger experience in Chat Heads allows that little head to appear on top of basically any app or screen, here you’re only getting it inside Facebook.

This update comes from within the basic Facebook app for iOS for iPhone first. We’re expecting the iPad version to follow soon after, while the Facebook Messenger app appears to have been completely unaffected. Though it would make sense for there to be one cohesive messaging experience here, it’s understandable that the Messenger app wouldn’t need a modification – you’re only chatting, that’s it!

Other than this Chat Heads addition, we’re seeing some stickers added to messages – cute! We’re also seeing the addition of Music Feeds, Photo Feeds, and Game Feeds – new ways to interact with each of these is included with the iPhone version while the iPad version gets essentially a total revamp. Based on the newest version of the web browser-based Facebook experience, the iPad app has now been brought into the massive future.

Also important: Facebook has made it clear in the app update notes we’re seeing here that Chat Heads will be made available to all users (on iOS, we must assume) in the coming week. Just wait your turn, iPad users!

WhatsApp CEO Says They Have More Users Than Twitter

WhatsApp CEO Says They Have More Users Than Twitter

After Facebook and its 1 billion plus users, Twitter is perhaps the most widely used social network. Back in December Twitter announced that it had more than 200 million monthly users. Today at a conference WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum revealed that the popular cross platform messaging service has more users than Twitter. Confirming that they had more users than Twitter, Jan however did not reveal any specific figures which will obviously be over 200 million. He also revealed that WhatsApp handles some 12 billion outbound messages and 8 billion in bound messages every single day.

Recently we were hearing rumors that Google was willing to acquire the service for up to $1 billion, these rumors were quickly shot down by Neeraj Arora, the business development head at WhatsApp. Today Jan touched on this subject as well, saying that they wanted to build a sustainable and independent company, to build a business and that acquisition is not really a viable exit strategy for them. While Twitter and WhatsApp are in two entirely different niches, it is interesting to see just how quickly a cross platform messaging service has gained a surge in its user base.

Facebook Home expands beyond the US, now up for download in Canada and the UK

Facebook promised that other countries would be getting Home for Android sometime after the US rollout, but it didn’t have much more to offer in the way of specifics at its launch event earlier this month. It turns out the wait wasn’t too long for some countries, though, as the Home app is now available for download in at least Canada and the UK. Of course, you’ll still need one of the phones already approved for use to actually run it — namely, the Samsung Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, HTC One X+, One X or One. As for the one phone that Home actually ships pre-installed on, the HTC First, it remains a US-exclusive on AT&T; EE and Orange have confirmed that they’ll be carrying it across the pond, but there’s still no word on Canadian availability.

Facebook 6.0 For iOS Brings Chat Heads And More

Facebook 6.0 For iOS Brings Chat Heads And More

Facebook showed off a number of new features that it has been working on to enhance user experience on mobile devices, at the Home launch. Facebook Home brings all of those features for Android, one of them is Chat Heads. The social network’s new iOS app is being rolled out right now which brings Chat Heads and a number of design tweaks to Apple’s platform. Users now have the ability to send ‘stickers’ to each other. Stickers are basically emoji like giant pictures. Only iPhone users can send stickers right now, they’re currently free and come in stacks of related pictures. News Feed has been redesigned, the look and feel is much cleaner than before making it easier to access content.

Chat Heads behavior on iOS is different than that on Android. Due to iOS sandboxing its apps, Chat Heads will only pop up inside the Facebook app, as opposed to popping up anywhere in Android. Incoming Facebook Messages will make Chat Heads pop out, they’re not integrated with SMS. Users can open one themselves to chat with any of their friends. They can be repositioned inside the Facebook app and will be vertically arrayed on the iPad’s larger display. Facebook 6.0 for iOS can now be downloaded from iTunes App Store.

First Facebook Home Update Coming Mid-May

First Facebook Home Update Coming Mid May

Facebook Home was officially announced some ten days ago, alongside the HTC First. Facebook hopes to make Android smartphones more “people-centric” with its latest software offering, which Microsoft believes to be an imitation of Windows Phone. That side, Facebook hasn’t exactly had the best launch. At the moment Home is only available for a select few Android devices and HTC First is the only smartphone that ships with it pre-installed. Those who have installed it through Google Play Store have mostly given it bad reviews. Majority of the reviews give it a 1 star rating.

Facebook has already said that it aims to update its mobile apps at least once every month. The head of Mobile Engineering at Facebook, Cory Ondrejka, has revealed that Facebook Home’s first ever update will be released in the second week of May. He did not reveal any details about the actual update, so it is not know as of now what improvements it will be bringing. The update will not be exclusive to the HTC First, rather it will be available for those users as well who download Home through Play Store for their supported devices.

Neutered Version of Facebook Chatheads Hits iOS

iOS device owners will soon get to experience the joy of Chatheads through an update to Facebook’s main app later today. Sort of.

Chat Heads bringing Facebook Home to iPhone and iPad today [UPDATE]

This week it’s been announced – but not updated quite yet – that the iOS version of Facebook will be getting a bit of Facebook Home for the iPad and iPhone. Though the full version of Facebook Home really isn’t a possibility for Apple’s mobile products the way their software is set up, the Chat Heads piece of the puzzle is being teased by Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer and mobile head Cory Ondrejka today at the AllThingsD Dive Into Mobile conference taking place this week.

image001

It’s not clear at the moment whether the Chat Heads feature will be appearing in the Facebook Messenger app exclusively or if the Facebook app itself – the main app – will have some aesthetic changes that reflect the inclusion of Chat Heads. From what we’ve seen thus far of Chat Heads in the Android Facebook app family, the best bits are in the inclusion of chats in your everyday non-Facebook app experience. With the iOS version we’re expecting a much more in-app set of features.

heads-2

Noted today, the updated Facebook apps for iOS will also include “stickers” for the messaging end on both iPad and iPhone. You’ll also be seeing an updated iPad app which includes aesthetics brought to Facebook in the newest newsfeed update to desktop. The mobile version will once again be reflecting the desktop version in-browser and vice-versa.

UPDATE: Facebook has added information on the update that’ll be rolling out today. Have a peek at these notes from the social network and keep refreshing your iTunes store updates tab!

Chat Heads

• Tap chat heads to reply, drag them around, or flick them down to close.

Stickers

• Tap the smiley to add stickers to your messages and get more stickers in the Sticker Store

You’ll want specifically to see our Facebook Home review for a vision of how this ecosystem works on Android and at our hands-on with Chat Heads for Android to see what the iOS version might bring. Again, we’re expecting a much more miniature set of features.
