iMessage And FaceTime Down For A While

iMessage And FaceTime Down For A WhileThe world ground to a halt for some moments earlier today, and I am referring to those who use Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime services, as both services were actually disrupted, so it is a good thing that they are up and running normally once again. Apparently, this particular issue did not affect everyone, but only some users, which would surely prove to be an irritating experience especially when you have in mind to communicate with someone else, be it on a business or personal basis, using iMessage and/or FaceTime.

According to Apple, the system status page showed that users were unable to place FaceTime calls and the same applied to sending/receiving iMessages within the time that spanned from 3:11 p.m. ET to 8:20 p.m. ET. This provided a window of 5 hours or so for frustrated users to air their rants over Twitter, and through the same medium, they celebrated the return of iMessage and FaceTime services. No idea on what was the cause behind the downtime though, perhaps there was a code gremlin hanging around somewhere that decided to be mischievous.

Cedars Sinai Hospital Announces BabyTime Initiative For Mothers To Interact Remotely With Their Newborn Baby

Cedars Sinai Hospital Announces BabyTime Initiative For Mothers To Interact Remotely With Their Newborn BabySo we’ve heard of Apple’s FaceTime, which is basically Apple’s spin on video calling, and it seems that the Cedars-Sinai hospital has announced a new initiative called “BabyTime”, which as the name might have already given away, is basically the use of FaceTime to help connect newborn babies with their mothers. As a male, I am unable to conceive how difficult it must be to give birth, let alone walk and hold your baby, so in the cases where moms are non-ambulatory after giving birth, this gives them a chance to connect with their newborn baby who might have been placed in the NICU where babies typically born from cesarean section are taken, or where there are complications that require strict monitoring.

Mothers will be able to access this BabyTime service twice a day and interact with their baby remotely. According to Charles F. Simmons Jr, MD, “BabyTime will help bridge communication with the family and the baby’s medical team and is an excellent use of technology to help new mothers bond with their babies, even when they cannot be physically at their babies’ bedside […] When doctors and nurses are treating a newborn in the NICU, mom can be right there asking questions and getting updates, even if she’s on a different floor.” Sounds like a pretty legit use of FaceTime – what do you guys think?

Here’s How FaceTime on AT&T LTE (Finally!) Looks

For way, way too long, AT&T blocked us from using the data we were paying for to make FaceTime video calls. Why? No good reason at all. But the blockage is over, and the good news is it works fantastically. More »

AT&T allowing FaceTime over cellular for all tiered data customers

After several months from Apple announcing FaceTime over cellular, AT&T is finally rolling the feature out to all of its tiered data customers. AT&T cites that its testing phase for FaceTime over cellular is complete, and will be enabled for all of its customers, including those on tiered data plans at no additional cost.

Previously, FaceTime was only available over cellular to customers with LTE or Mobile Share plans, and now, those who own the iPhone 4S and are on any tiered data plan can now use the carrier’s HSPA+ network to use Apple’s video chat tool. There’s no word on whether customers with unlimited data plans can use FaceTime over cellular, though, so it looks like the feature is still only good for those with tiered data plans.

AT&T says that it has already begun updating their “systems and processes,” and expects to start rolling the update out to eligible customers “beginning in the next couple of weeks.” Previously, back in November, the carrier announced that iPhone 5 users with tiered data plans would be allowed to use FaceTime over its LTE network.

The good news is that any AT&T customer with an older Apple device can now use FaceTime over cellular, including the iPhone 4S and previous-generation iPads. With the popularity of discounted older-gen iPhones, more and more budget-minded consumers are buying Apple’s older gear, and with AT&T’s lift on FaceTime over cellular, more users will finally be able to chat with their friends and family while on the go.

AT&T now offering FaceTime over Cellular on all tiered data plans

AT&T now offering FaceTime over Cellular on tiered data plans

It’s been a slow process, but AT&T is gradually making FaceTime over Cellular (Apple’s video chat service) available to more people. The feature was introduced with iOS 6, but it was up to carriers on how they wanted to implement the service — if at all. AT&T chose to offer it to only shared data customers at first, to ensure that the carrier’s network could handle the additional load. Finally, the top GSM operator in the US has announced that it will now allow the feature on all tiered data plans and extend the service to 4S users, and it should be rolling out to customers over the course of the next two weeks. There’s still no word on grandfathered unlimited plans, but don’t get your hopes up on that happening any time soon. To get the full explanation, head to the source link below.

AT&T Will Finally Let Everyone FaceTime Over 3G Network

In a move overdue since FaceTime over cellular launched in September, AT&T is finally letting most of its customers actually freaking use it. In a blog post, AT&T says it has extensively tested the feature and that it will be enabled to all customers on tiered data plans at no additional cost. More »

Revolve Robotics' KUBI spins your tablet around for teleconferences, we go handson

We’ve been covering telepresence robots for years, but those that have materialized aren’t exactly within most people’s budget. However, if all you need is some way to rotate your view on the other end of the line, then you may consider Revolve Robotics’ KUBI. With six days left and just over $27,000 away from the $50,000 goal (the team was able to knock 50 percent off the original goal), this Indiegogo project hopes to offer a relatively affordable and simple telepresence solution for existing tablet users. The KUBI itself is essentially a tablet mount that can do a 300-degree pan plus 90-degree tilt, and the prototypes we saw featured two spring-loaded aluminium arms that elegantly pinches the tablet — we’ve been told that they can even fit Microsoft’s Surface in landscape. The robot is pretty much platform-agnostic as long as the tablet supports Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, which is how the robot receives its motion commands.

iPhone FaceTime over cellular for AT&T now available for some, even without LTE?

AT&T’s decision to let only its customers on shared and new data plans pick up FaceTime over cellular may have riled some, but at least it’s been able to roll-out the functionality earlier than the two-month window suggested in early November. MacRumors‘ forums are abuzz with word that their iOS devices (mostly on the East Coast) are now able to make FaceTime calls without WiFi. Perhaps more importantly, according to these early reports, you might not have to wield an LTE iDevice to use it, with several non-4G devices running iOS 6 able to stream faces elsewhere. If you’re still getting the pop-up of misery (seen above), forum users suggesting switching your phone off and on again.

AT&T reportedly rolls FaceTime over cellular to all customers

There were many unhappy AT&T subscribers when the wireless carrier prevented them from using FaceTime over cellular networks. Early on, the only time iPhone or iPad users could use FaceTime was when they were connected to a Wi-Fi network. Earlier this month we mentioned that AT&T had changed that policy.

However, when AT&T announced that it was rolling out FaceTime to cellular customers there were caveats. Notably you had to be using a tiered data plan and a LTE device. Those caveats limited use to the iPhone 5 or the iPad with LTE connectivity.

Reports are coming in that AT&T has now quietly expanded support for FaceTime over a cellular connection to all customers. Some customers have reported that their grandfathered unlimited data plan iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S devices are now supporting FaceTime over the cellular network.

This was confirmed by a number of users over on the MacRumors forms. However, it’s worth noting that some users of those devices on unlimited data plans report that they still can’t access FaceTime over the mobile network. That could mean that the service isn’t rolled out to all users yet. However, it could mean that AT&T has made some sort of mistake allowing that access at all since it hasn’t bragged about it officially. If you’re on an unlimited grandfathered AT&T data plan, let us know if you can do FaceTime over your mobile network.
