Intel’s 3D camera technology detects emotions and eyes, gives Kinect some competition

We know that Intel sees 3D cameras as the future of computing, and the company’s Anil Nanduri just provided a few hints of what that future may involve. He tells Network World that the depth-sensing technology can recognize emotions, such as happy smiles. It can also track your gaze; a camera can detect when readers are stumped by unfamiliar words in a book, for example. The technology’s shape detection is accurate enough that it can even scan objects for 3D printing. We won’t get a true sample of the technology’s potential until Creative ships its Senz3D camera before the end of the current quarter. Nonetheless, it’s already evident that Microsoft’s next-generation Kinect for Windows will have some real competition on its hands.

Remember those “Fortaleza” AR glasses we saw in a leaked Microsoft document back when the Xbox One was still the Xbox 720? It looks like those might actually be a thing, if a patent application from Redmond is any indication. It touts the idea of “multiplayer gaming with a head-mounted display,” claiming the device could receive voice commands, track your eyes, calculate depth and recognize the faces of fellow players. All that would be in the rather narrow service of letting you invite others and accept invitations to a game through strictly visual means, though. That makes it similar to another recent Microsoft patent we saw for augmenting live events with AR, since the emphasis is on a specific usage rather than the eyewear itself. We might even see an application some day for actual gaming on such a device, but meanwhile, check after the break for more images.

College-age kids these days are pretty good at a few things: selfies, social oversharing and staring into screens. But can you leverage that self-obsession into a mechanism for learning? The mad scientists at North Carolina State University think so and they’ve got a program to prove it. Dubbed JavaTutor, the software’s aimed at teaching our future workforce the basics of computer science. And it does this by tracking facial expressions — using the Computer Expressions Recognition Toolbox, or CERT, as its base — during online tutorial sessions. Frown and the AI knows you’re frustrated; concentrate intently and the same automated emotion detection applies. So, what’s the end sum of all this? Well, it seems the research team wants to gauge the effectiveness of online courses and use the cultivated feedback to better tailor the next iteration of the JavaTutor system. But the greater takeaway here, folks, is that at NCSU, online tutoring learns you!

Since surveillance culture is at the top of the news agenda, this new invention from Japan’s National Institute of Informatics couldn’t be more timely. It’s a pair of goggles that blocks facial recognition algorithms and ensures no-one can snap a pic of your mush without your permission. The wearable uses 11 near-infrared LEDs which shine a bright light that’s invisible to humans, but will dazzle any passing cameras. Admittedly, the technology is useless for cameras that aren’t sensitive to infra-red, which is why the institute is also working on reflective materials that’ll work with any imaging sensor — but that, unfortunately, isn’t quite ready for prime-time. Google patents new facial recognition technology to let users unlock phones with a wink and a smile

Google first implemented face-unlock in ICS, and since then, it’s been hard at work improving the feature and acquiring new IP related to it. Last fall, the search giant patented a way for multiple users to use face-unlock on a single device. This week it obtained a new patent for a method that requires users to make a series of facial expressions to gain access to a system. Essentially, the patent claims a method where a device captures two images of a user, then compares the differences in the images to identify a facial gesture and authenticate the user.

In other words, its a face-unlock method where a device looks at two pictures of your mug to tell if you’re raising an eyebrow, frowning or sticking your tongue out as instructed by a prompt from the device. And, it double checks to ensure that it is, in fact, the same face in both images. Oh, and the patent leaves room for a series of expressions to be used — so at some point in the future, you may have to give your Google-fied phone a wink and a smile before it grants you access. Guess that’s easier than remembering a PIN, right?

Google: ‘We won’t be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time’

While the public decides how to deal with Google Glass-wearing cyborgs walking among us, there are already startups trying to add facial recognition to the device. That includes the MedRef for Glass app for Doctors and an API created by Lambda Labs that’s on the way. Unfortunately, apparently due to privacy concerns, a post tonight by the Project Glass team says that it will not approve any app using the tech for release — at least until it has some privacy protections in place. That’s the same standard it previously said would need to be met before it added facial recognition to its own services.

We’ve been listening closely to you, and many have expressed both interest and concern around the possibilities of facial recognition in Glass. As Google has said for several years, we won’t add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place. With that in mind, we won’t be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time.

Without approval, we don’t expect to see any standard apps with the API built-in, however with the headset’s current wide open nature, we assume interested hackers will be able to get the software running if they so desire. So, how comfortable do you feel having a conversation with someone wearing Glass, considering third parties may add extra features even if Google itself is not involved? MedRef for Glass uses facial recognition to identify patients, keeps health records

We’ve seen a few interesting apps built specifically for Google’s new headset but, to our knowledge MedRef for Glass is the first that recognize people’s faces. The basic functions aren’t anything terribly ground breaking: you can create and search patient files, and even add voice or photo notes. What makes Lance Nanek’s creation unique is its support for facial recognition. A user can snap a picture of a subject and upload it to the cloud, where it will search patient records for a match using the Betaface API. All of this can be done, relatively hands-free leaving a doctors well-trained mitts available to perform other necessary medical duties. There’s still a lot of work to do, and Nanek hopes that with more powerful hardware the facial recognition feature could be left running constantly, removing the need to snap and upload photos. In the meantime, if you’re one of the lucky few to have an Explorer edition of Google Glass you can install the package at the source link. Otherwise, you’ll have to make do with the demo video after the break.

After landing itself in hot water with the Irish Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) and Hamburg’s Data Protection Authority (DPA), Facebook has deleted all of its European photo tagging facial recognition data. After reviewing the company’s source code and deletion process, DPC spokesperson Ciara O’Sullivan confirmed today that the regulatory agency was satisfied with the social network’s compliance. Additional removal confirmation came from Hamburg’s DPC’s technical department, which also reviewed the firm’s software to ensure that its standards were met. In a recent comment to CFO World, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed that the data had been deleted and that the social network has no plans to reinstate facial recognition software in Europe anytime soon. No word on whether Facebook will now purchase sadface.com for… oh, $80 million or so.

Intel rumored to launch set-top box, ‘virtual cable TV service’ at CES

With CES 2013 just days away, TechCrunch has posted a juicy rumor that chipmaker Intel will announce a major plunge into TV, choosing to go it alone after several failed partnerships in an effort to “do it right” this time. Claiming an unnamed source in the video distribution industry, the rumor suggests a plan to deliver a set-top box with DVR, rolled out on a city-by-city basis as it negotiates channel agreements. Despite a number of demos through the years, the Intel-powered TV boxes that have landed in our living rooms so far have been the first gen Google TV and Boxee Box units. Both struggled to make a significant impact and switched to ARM CPUs for the second generation of their products.

Based on some of the tech demos we’ve seen and earlier rumors, Intel’s plans could include using facial recognition to personalize the experience for (and target advertising towards) different viewers, and offering smaller, cheaper bundles of channels than traditional providers. Another element from the TechCrunch post indicates a plan to provide a Catch Up TV-style service that lets users view anything that has aired in the last month on the channels they’re subscribed to, although there’s no word on what will power this technology.

Intel’s participation in Comcast’s Reference Design Kit program is also referenced, although given Big Cable’s traditional reluctance regarding alternative delivery models, any sort of tie-in here seems like a long shot to us. A combo package of pay-TV channels and internet VOD has been tried before, although Sezmi’s antenna-connected solution failed to catch on and fizzled late last year. Like recently rekindled Apple HDTV rumors, the potential of Intel’s service may rely just as much on its success negotiating with content providers as any technology it’s cooked up. From existing tech like Face Unlock and Google Goggles to patent filings and Project Glass, it’s clear that Google sees augmented reality and image recognition playing a big part in our computing future. It makes sense, then, that Big G subsidiary Motorola has bought Viewdle — a Silicon Valley company that builds face, object, and gesture recognition technology for mobile devices. We don’t know how much MMI paid for Viewdle, but we do know, thanks to a statement obtained by the good folks at TechCrunch, that the two firms “have been collaborating for some time.” So, hopefully Android will reap the benefits (and fix those Face Unlock flaws) in the not-so-distant future.
