Archos FamilyPad Debuts In UK

Since Christmas is coming, you must be wondering yourself just what kind of gifts do you think you can get for the rest of the family. Well, I am quite sure that a tablet or new smartphone is high on most people’s lists, and a quarter of a year after the Archos FamilyPad hit the FCC, it will finally make its market debut – just in time for the frenzied holiday shopping season too, I might add. The Archos FamilyPad will sport a 13.3” display, making it the largest tablet out there in the market at the moment, which is ideal to have the family gather around it.

Sporting 10x multitouch support, the Archos FamilyPad is tipped to be the focal point of families in the living room, although I believe that Archos might need a few more releases in the same vein and some wicked marketing before such an idea will overtake the TV or video game console. The Archos FamilyPad’s display carries 1280×800 resolution, and will feature 8GB internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, HDMI output and a front and rear camera – both of them being 2-megapixel shooters. Running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the Archos FamilyPad will retail for £274.99 in the UK, as US residents might have to play the patience card for a little while longer.

DNP Archos's 133inch FamilyPad is designed for FamilyTime

Three months after we spied the Archos FamilyPad on the FCC, it’s finally making its debut just in time for the holiday shopping season. As its name suggests, the 13.3-inch tablet is designed for a whole family to gather around — though we doubt it would be very comfortable if your family has more than four people. With 10x multitouch support, Archos claims families can use it to watch movies, keep organized, share pictures and play digital board games; the company even pre-installed a few of the latter to get your family started. The FamilyPad doesn’t have the best of specs, with a 1,280×800 HD display, 8GB flash memory, a microSD card slot, a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, HDMI output and a front and rear camera that are 2-megapixels each. It does run Ice Cream Sandwich and would offer “a variety of email accounts for each family member.” Those in the UK can purchase it for £274.99 ($438) when it’s available in December, while US residents might have to wait a little longer. Maybe you can give your kids some ChildPads to play on their own instead; they might appreciate it more than enforced togetherness.

13.3″ Archos FamilyPad tablet spotted at the FCC

Tablets so far have come in a handful of sizes – 7”, 9.7” and 10.1”, although not too long ago Toshiba attempted to disrupt the market by introducing a 13.3” tablet, the Excite 13. Now if you thought that Toshiba was the only player in the market with a 13.3” tablet, you would be mistaken as thanks to an FCC filing, it seems that Archos has something similar planned as well. Spotted in an FCC filing is the Archos FamilyPad which sports a 13.3” display.

However while it might share the same screen size as the Toshiba Excite 13, the rest of its specs are probably less exciting. The FamilyPad comes with an AllWinner A10 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 8/16GB of internal storage, WiFi, an SD card slot for memory expansion, two USB ports and a front-facing camera. No word if and when the Archos FamilyPad will be making its debut stateside, but we will be keeping our eyes peeled nonetheless. So anyone else in the market for a 13.3” tablet, or would you rather get a laptop/ultrabook instead?

Archos has already been targeting kids with its Child Pad slate, and now it looks like it’s going after mom and pop, too. A recent FCC filing of a slate emblazoned with “Family Pad” shows a large tablet (13.3-inches according to the manual) that will apparently come in other — hopefully smaller — sizes. Likewise, there appears to be 8- and 16GB variants, 802.11n wireless, and an Allwinner A10 processor. The Android tablet also has a memory card slot for adding up to another 32GB, as well as a pair of USB ports, HDMI, and front- and rear-facing cameras. This choice of processor suggests it’ll be reasonably gentle on the pocket whenever it comes out, which considering it’s at the FCC, could be soon.
