Hasta La Gadget!

There’s no doubt that Samsung’s Omnia II is one of the most coveted Windows Mobile smartphones out at the moment — we mean, who can really resist a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 7.2Mbps HSPA, a 5 megapixel camera and 720 x 480 movie recording? For Americans, however, there seemed to be little hope that GSM fans would ever see a version catering specifically to their needs (read: dual-band 850 / 1,900MHz 3G “needs”)… until now. On this fine Friday, the cool cats over at the FCC have shown that there actually is a GT-i8000 headed to America with support for AT&T 3G bands, though obviously little else is known about when it’ll make its expected splash. Better hurry, Samsung — the competition’s heating up over here.

It’s about time, wouldn’t you agree? After finding that Orange would become Europe’s first carrier to sell LG’s luscious GD910 watch phone, every closet Dick Tracy fan in America began wondering when (and if) LG would make a similar announcement here on US soil. Regrettably, we’re still waiting for the official line from the company, but this will certainly suffice for now. The image you see above is being provided courtesy of a freshly released FCC filing, which means precisely one thing: this here watch phone is destined for America. Of course, we suppose LG could have just made the filing for kicks and giggles, but our optimistic imagination simply won’t let us believe such a tragedy could ever occur. Hang tight, Yanks — your dream device just got a lot closer to clearing customs.

Guess who’s back? Creative. Hard to believe, we know, but the company we’ve all but forgotten looks ready to make a comeback in the portable audio / video game. Creative Labs Zii and Zii EGG just made their first appearance at the FCC. Can’t say that we’re too enthused by the “EGG” moniker but we’re definitely liking the looks of that “HD Camera” module along the backside of these “MP4 players with touchscreens” and 802.11b/g WiFi. That “developer edition” is also a good sign that Creative is looking to make this a software platform a la the ol’ iPod touch only with Creative’s Zii system-on-chip architecture secret sauce. In fact, these devices could very well be running Android atop Creative’s ZMS-05 chipset as we saw back in February. Welcome back Creative, you’ve got until September or so before Apple adds a camera to its own iPod touch… best get to work.

No mention was made of a Hero with 3G that’d work on Rogers or AT&T back at its announcement a few days ago, but HTC has been getting awfully good at making phones that work properly around these parts — so we can’t say we’re entirely surprised to see a Hero approved for WCDMA on Bands II and V gracing the FCC today. For the record, Bands II and V are 1900 and 850MHz, respectively, which is exactly the combo AT&T subscribers would need to flip the switch on high-speed data. We’re not sure if this negates rumors that the Hero would be coming to Sprint, but if we can just get this version released and in our hands, you know… maybe our minds would be operating with a little more clarity.

We’re not sure what the LG M13 is, exactly, but we can tell you one very important thing about the mysterious device: it’s awesome. We know this because the FCC has revealed some limited documentation about the recent approval, which is where we find out that it’s a “Cellular / PCS CDMA / EvDO and 700MHz LTE Device.” Translated, that means it’ll be able to play both on CDMA networks — take Verizon’s, for example — and also on LTE spectrum deployed in the 700MHz band, which Big Red just so happens to have recently purchased a whole lot of. This wouldn’t be the first time LTE-compatible stuff from LG has garnered FCC love, but it would be the first time we’ve seen a device that supports both LTE and CDMA — and considering that Verizon will have both networks operational for years (if not decades) to come, that’s a pretty important feature. Any creative guesses as to what this might be, then? A modem, perhaps?
