April Fools Compilation

In the latest round of April fools, a number of high-profile companies have worked hard to make us smile at the office. We’ve selected our favorite gags of the day (with a tech twist obviously!) and while Google gets a commendation for being very prolific, others have done great April Fools gags too, here are our favorites, in no particular order:

Virgin Glass-Bottom Plane

April Fools Compilation

The title says it all, really, but Virgin has come up with an interesting (or terrifying) concept with this glass-bottom plane. Can you imagine what it would be see through that bottom while you are at 10,000ft in the air? Actually, the landing would probably be the  most interesting part of the trip — let us know which one you prefer in the comments. Can read the fake announcement from Richard Brandson. (more…)

Intel PixelSync Contributes To computer Graphics History

Intel PixelSync Contributes To computer Graphics HistoryAt GDC 2013, Intel has revealed some details of its 4th Gen Core Processors, including details about their upcoming graphics processors features (all Intel Core processor comes with a graphics processor or integrated GPU inside). Not surprisingly, DirectX 11.1 is supported, but what was not expected was that Intel actually extended upon the DX11 specifications to include two new features: Instant Access and PixelSync. Instant Access provides a more straightforward, more convenient and faster way to access the GPU memory, PixelSync does provide a more fundamental improvement in how computer graphics work and performs, especially when it comes to handling transparency. Chromebook Samsung series 3.

Just like set top boxes, which are dedicated devices for streaming video content, the Chromebook is a dedicated web browsing appliance. It is an inexpensive piece of hardware, running on a free Operating System, with free software and updates (OS, firmware and drivers), troubleshooting free, anti-virus and anti-malware proof and you cannot “mess it up”, even if you wanted to.

Now, assuming, somehow, it was “broken”, it could be restored to the factory settings with just one click, well, may be two. In case the device is misplaced, stolen or just died, there is no data loss, unless it was stored locally, no software re-installations, no reconfiguration. Put your hands on another Chromebook, login your gmail account and voila, everything should be where you left it off. Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? The truth is I am as eager as you are to find out! The following is my review: (more…)

HP Envy X2 Review

HP Envy X2 Review

Microsoft created its Windows 8 OS with touchscreen in mind, with a number of traditional PC users most likely groaning at the thought of reaching out to their monitor in order to open up a program. Mobile computers like laptops, ultrabooks and tablets seem to be making the best use of the new OS since their screen is within an easily reachable distance.

HP introduced its Envy X2 last August which is an 11.6” touch-screen slate PC that easily brings the portability of a tablet with the productivity of a light laptop when it’s connected to its keyboard dock. When we originally put our hands all over it, we walked away extremely impressed, but we knew we had to get this thing into our review lab to put it through all of our tests to see just how good it is. Plair hands-on redux: a clever wireless video streaming HDMI dongle (video)

Plair handson redux at Expand 2013 a clever wireless video streaming HDMI dongle

We didn’t really get to see the Plair in action when we last saw it at CES, but luckily, it’s here with us at Expand 2013! This time round we have a better understanding of what makes this $99, micro-USB-powered HDMI dongle so special: not only can you beam native video clips from your mobile device (through an iOS or Android app) or your desktop Chrome browser’s extension to it, but the Plair can also grab the video source from your current page in Chrome and then stream the clip independently — as in once the video’s started, you can shut your computer down and still keep the stream going on your TV! You can actually see this demonstrated in our video after the break, where we streamed an episode from NBC’s Saturday Night Live website through a WiFi network (but the Plair can also create its own hotspot for direct WiFi connection, which is handy for avoiding slow hotel networks).

In our opinion, the Plair is a neat little gadget for its price, but you’ll have to wait until early April for the next batch coming off the production line. Interested buyers will be able to order a Plair on its website around then.

Insert Coin finalist: Ziphius aquatic drone hands-on (video)

Joining the handful of Insert Coin finalists at Expand is Azorean’s cute Ziphius aquatic drone. While Fort Mason is located by the seaside, the folks actually brought their own little pool along to let their Raspberry Pi-powered robot splash around in; though it can happily operate in seawater as well and thus adding more use case possibilities — be it for entertainment (including autonomous ball-chasing, for instance) or for environmental monitoring. Through a direct WiFi connection we were able to use an Android tablet to control both the Ziphius’ surprisingly powerful motors and its camera’s vertical position, as well as watching a live video feed at the same time.

The final version of the drone will come with an interchangeable chassis to suit different purposes or simply for personalization, and internally it’ll be equipped with Raspberry Pi’s upcoming high quality camera module, which will enable even better streaming and onboard 1080p 30fps capture. According to CEO Edmundo Nobre, the Kickstarter campaign will launch before the end of the month, and he’s hoping to bring the Ziphius to the mass market with a price point at around $200 to $250. Not bad, huh? Check out our hands-on video after the break.

Apple Calls Galaxy S4 OS “Old”, Gets Overwhelmingly Bad Public Feedback

Apple Calls Galaxy S4 OS Old, Gets Overwhelmingly Bad Public Feedback

Yesterday, Apple’s Phil Schiller (Marketing Leader at Apple) told the Wall Street Journal that Android smartphones were ” free replacement for a feature phone”, and today, the company went to another trusted media -Reuters- to add a second layer of criticism: that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will launch with a “year old” update since it is rumored to launch with a version of Android which is not the absolute latest. “We are hearing this week that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is being rumored to ship with an OS that is nearly a year old,” he says. Update: the Galaxy S4 is officially using Android 4.2.2, which completely deflates Phil Schiller’s point… (more…)

The Engadget Interview: Vertu CEO Perry Oosting talks specs and rationale

Vertu CEO Perry Oosting talks about specs, TKTK

“Hi, I’m Richard Lai from Engadget. You guys probably hate us but…”

“No no, I don’t hate you,” Vertu’s 52-year-old President and CEO interjected with a charming smile. He then laid a hand on my shoulder and explained our in-joke to the other chuckling diners, “These guys, they read the specs and they only judge by the specs.”

Of course, it was just a light-hearted banter the night before our interview, but having been with the luxury phone maker since June 2009 as President, Perry Oosting obviously knew of everyone’s ongoing jokes about the rationale of his super expensive phones. Even before Vertu, the Dutchman would’ve faced a similar problem when he held senior positions at the likes of Bulgari, Prada, Gucci and Escada, except these brands have been around for a lot longer; and for us mere mortals, their existence is already widely accepted. Not so much for the luxury gadgets, though.
