LG Optimus G Pro Officially Has a 5.5-inch Display

LG Optimus G Pro Officially Has a 5.5 inch Display

Although the Japanese version of the LG Optimus G is already on the market, the world was eagerly awaiting for some certainty as for the International version, and the U.S version will most likely be derivatives of that one. First of all the LG Optimus G Pro is officially a “Phablet”, thanks to its huge 5.5″ 1080p (full HD) IPS Display. From a processor standpoint, the Optimus G Pro will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro just like its predecessor. There’s 2GB  of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (no microSD, sorry). There’s one more bit of good news: the battery will stand at 3140mAh and that should provide enough room for power users to play with.

We’ve been quite enthusiastic about the LG Optmus G, and so far, it seems that the Optimus G Pro improves where it was needed the most, namely the display quality (1080p) and the larger battery. The 5.5″ size is welcome for folks (like me) who like the comfort of a large display. This will raise the bar for the upcoming Nexus Phone…

As you may have seen, LG has also announced lower-end LG Optimus L Series II smartphones yesterday, with the LG L5II, L3II and L7II. All handsets should be on display at Mobile World Congress in a couple of weeks. [LG site, in Korean]

Canon EOS M Review

Canon EOS M ReviewCanon is the last “big” player to enter the compact camera system market by introducing this small EOS M camera. It is fair to say that a compact system with the EOS name was eagerly awaited with great expectations given that the EOS line of DSLR cameras from Canon have such a glorious name. The camera has arrived, and we have used it for some time.

Among the selling points from Canon: the Canon EOS M shoots 1080p movies and can keep the image in focus, thanks to its continuous tracking. It has stereo microphones. Canon touts its hybrid autofocus (AF) to be fast for both still photos and video. That sounds great, but we have to put it to the test in the real world.

Finally, the EOS M has an optional adapter to for Canon EOS lenses designed for DSLR cameras, instead of the Canon EF-M lens format which has been created to suit Canon’s compact EOS line. OK, that’s enough for the introduction. Let’s see how it is to use this Canon EOS M camera in the field. (more…)

Soonr Workplace: Collaboration app with document scan, HD video playback and Microsoft Office

I published about Soonr a while ago when the company was selected by Business 2.0 as one of the 25 Startups to Watch in 2007. Before the iPhone was launched in June 2007, mobile applications were not very common and I was impressed by the capabilities of Soonr , which, at the time, allowed users to remotely browse their files and folders on their desktop computer from their Smartphone even when the computer was offline.

Today, Soonr provides its Online File Sharing and Collaboration services to over 140,000 businesses and offers a wider range of capabilities. During MacWorld 2013, Soonr Workplace got additional features, including Smart File Locking, Document Scan, Full-resolution video playback on iPad, iWorks Rendering Support and QR Support. To see how it works, watch the video I shot at MacWorld 2013 with the demo by Martin Frid-Nielsen, CEO, Soonr.

HTC Droid DNA vs. J Butterfly vs. Butterfly: fight!

HTC Droid DNA vs J Butterfly vs Butterfly fly!

HTC made quite an impression when it launched the Droid DNA with Verizon a couple of months ago, and we’re happy to say that its Butterfly variants on the other side of the world — namely Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), India and China — have achieved similar success, with some areas struggling to keep up with the surprising demand. Still, if you’re in the market to pick up one of these 5-inch quad-core beauties, it’s worth noting the subtle physical and technical differences between them. At HTC’s Frequencies event this week, we had the rare chance to get all four (yes, four!) models side by side, so read on for our detailed comparison.

NVIDIA Shield Is About Shaping The Mobile Chip Battlefield

nvidia shield preview 01 640x426 NVIDIA Shield Is About Shaping The Mobile Chip Battlefield

NVIDIA has provided some insights about how the NVIDIA Shield portable gaming device came to be (read about our hands-on time with the Shield at CES). I recommend reading the article on their website, and if you want a quick primer: it’s a great story of an ambitious idea which was turned into reality by an initial group of hardcore engineers which subsequently got company-wide support to the finish line. I think that they tell their story very well (with a hint of corporate marketing), so there’s no point in parroting it here – it’s a very good read.

Most people see NVIDIA only as a chip or graphics cards manufacturer which is remote from building gamer consoles but in my view, the company always had a “platform building” DNA that the world sees only now. Note that although I worked at NVIDIA until 2007, this post only reflects my opinion, and I don’t have any current insider information, so your guess is as good as mine. (more…)

BlackBerry Z10 Review Sentiment

blackberry z10 white BlackBerry Z10 Review Sentiment

As the first wave of BlackBerry Z10 Reviews by media trusted by BlackBerry hit the web, and from our own hands-on experience with the developer unit, here are the 5 takeaways from today’s launch and the first appearance of the final version of the BlackBerry OS. On the menu: industrial design, battery life and more…

1/ BlackBerry 10 is a great OS

If one thing can save BlackBerry (the company), it’s a good software foundation for the future. Clearly, the previous operating system could not evolve much more, and switching to QNX is a sound move. Today’s demonstration was convincing and the initial support from high-profile developers is too. Now, Blackberry needs to convince the larger development community to get on board and they will need to show that money can be made with BlackBerry Apps. It’s as simple as that.

We find the Operating System user Interface to be sound and efficient, and we expect pretty much every review to agree with this. The Keyboard efficiency is impressive, and to date, this is probably the best virtual keyboard on the market. Others should take notice and improve their own. The iPhone keyboard in particular has not really evolved in years, and it is already behind the curve when compared to Android competitors. (more…)

The Consumerization of IT
People are accustomed to using their beautifully designed and easy-to-use productivity tools in their everyday life. As employees, they have the same expectation for their experience in their work environment. Enterprises are now embracing this change and allowing employees to bring their own devices to work (BYOD) and to adopt low-cost SAAS-based solutions, saving substantial costs in the IT department but rendering concerns around security and compliance.

The opportunity is for the companies who can couple simplicity, good design, ease-of-use, and speed with enterprise-level security and compliance. These enterprise products will benefit both the CIO and CMO in delivering a flawless experience for both the employee and the company. Smart startups that have met this challenge will be presenting at Under the Radar: The Consumerization of IT.
