Eyes-on with Samsung’s new 85-inch S9 UHDTV at CES (video)

Eyeson with Samsung's new 85inch S9 UHD TV at CES video

Right on the heels on Samsung’s CES press conference, we got up close and personal with Samsung’s just-announced work of art, the 85-inch S9 UHD TV. Its size alone is pretty spectacular, but Sammy clearly wanted to make this one a looker. The company calls stand a “timeless gallery” frame, and indeed the set would fit right in with some of the more conceptual pieces at the MoMA. Still, that easel-like design could be a bit limiting for some living rooms, so you can remove the S9 and wall-mount it — though the 2.2 channel audio is built into that frame. Unique design aside, this TV is all about the high-end specs. “Precision Black Pro” display tech is to thank for the high contrast ratio, and colors really do pop — even without Samsung’s grand display of fireworks. Powering all 85 inches of high-def visuals is a quad-core processor, which should also help to up-sample 1080p footage to make better use of that Ultra HD (4K) resolution. No word on pricing or availability yet, but it’s said to be available sometime in 2013, so start saving those pennies. In the mean-time, check out our walk-around video after the break.

ASUS Qube hands-on (video)

ASUS Qube eyeson video

One of ASUS‘ most significant announcements at CES this year is the Google TV-powered Qube. Just as the name suggests, the device comes in the shape of a cube, with an IR receiver on the front side, a USB port on the right, and a bunch more on the back: HDMI-in, HDMI-out, another USB port, RJ-45 and IR-out. Internally the Qube packs a Marvell Armada 1500 chipset with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of flash storage. Like the chassis, the Qube’s interface also features a rotating cube, but that’s pretty much the only thing special about it so far.

The Qube naturally comes with its very own remote control, and with the exception of the lack of a numpad it comes with all the standard buttons, and on the other side it has a QWERTY keyboard. It’s worth pointing out that there’s also a voice command button as well as motion-sensing, thus making the most out of Google TV ver.3. Not a fan of the remote control? Then you can simply download an app onto your Nexus 7 or any Android device to get the same functions.

In terms of availability, ASUS plans to launch the Qube in the US in around March for around $150. For the mean time, grab yourself a beverage and check out the demo video after the break.

ASUS Nexus 7 dock hands-on

ASUS Nexus 7 dock handson

Along with the Qube and the VivoTab Smart at CES, ASUS also quietly showed off its dock for the Nexus 7 at its remote suite outside CES. Judging by the tablet’s position in the above photo, you can tell that the fairly weighty dock makes use of the tablet’s pin connectors towards the bottom of its left side. Swing to the back and you’ll see a micro-USB port plus an audio-out socket. That’s actually pretty much it for the dock, and there’s no price or availability just yet for the US so we’ll keep our eyes open for more detail.

Nubia Z5 unveiled in China with quad-core chip, 5-inch 1080p display and 7.6mm thickness

Nubia Z5 unveiled as the world's thinnest 5inch 1080p phone, available in January

Much like many Chinese smartphone brands these days, ZTE sub-brand Nubia had prematurely given away the main selling points of its Z5 ahead of its Beijing launch today, but there were still some surprises. As you probably already know, here’s yet another five-inch 1080p Android phone featuring Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064, 2GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage, along with a 13-megapixel F2.2 main camera (with five-element optics by Konica Minolta, plus separate touch focus and touch exposure in the app) and a two-megapixel front-facing camera. For multimedia consumption, the Z5 supports WiFi Display and MHL output should you wish to beam content to a larger screen; whereas on the audio side you are spoiled with either Yamaha or Dolby Digital Plus. But wait, there’s more!

Intel Buys NVIDIA: A Closer Look At The Possibility [Rumor]

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang posing in front of a GPU-powered supercomputer

As Intel is looking for a new CEO, something surprising did happen recently: the company has hinted that it may bring in someone from the outside, which would be a first for Intel. So far I’ve heard names like Sanjay Jah, the former Motorola CEO (and ex-Qualcomm COO)  as potential replacement for Intel’s Paul Otellini who is retiring in May 2013. Tech site BSN has started a new Internet buzz by coming up with a totally different rumor: according to them, Intel is looking at buying NVIDIA, and would name Jen-Hsun Huang (NVIDIA’s CEO) as Intel’s new CEO. Now, *that* would be something that we would like to observe. This rumors is backed by pretty much nothing, but it is fun to discuss: so, how likely is it to happen? Let’s look at the pro and cons for Intel. (more…)

HTC 8X Review

The HTC 8X is probably the most readily available Windows Phone 8 smartphone in the USA, and so far, it did not seem to suffer from any shortage. This smartphone is available on the T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon networks in various colors: Red, Yellow, Blue and Black. These are the Windows Theme colors and so far, the public seems to be excited by the idea of getting a brightly colored handset.

On the market, The HTC 8X main competitor is the Nokia Lumia 920, which is similarly priced at AT&T. If you absolutely want to be on T-Mobile or Verizon, then the fight falls back to the lower-end Nokia 8xx models as the 920 is an AT&T exclusive for the time being.

The HTC 8X’s main advantage over the Nokia Lumia 920 is the slightly smaller size (if you like that) and the much lighter weight, which is for many (but not all) an undeniable advantage that cannot be ignored. However, the Lumia 920 has great advantages of its own, including the low-light camera and exclusive Nokia software. Which one is best for you? (more…)
