LG G Pro 2 Hands-On Review

The LG G Pro 2 launched last week in Korea and yesterday I was able to briefly play with it at the LG press conference. Just like the LG G flex, the display is amazing and, despite its large size (5.9-inch) the device feels surprisingly light. The manufacturer managed to keep the footprint small, thanks to a super thin 0.4 mm bezel! At 172 g, the new LG flagship is only 3g heavier than its smaller competitor the Samsung Galaxy Note which is equipped with a 5.7-inch display.

    Sony Xperia Z2 Hands-On

Sony Xperia Z2 Hands OnSince the launch of the Xperia Z,  Sony has been back in the mobile handset game, and today, I was impressed with the quality of the new Xperia Z2 that was unveiled at the press conference at MWC.

The key features of the latest Sony flagship are its gorgeous 5.2-inch Full HD Triluminos display and a 20.7 Megapixel camera featuring an Exmor RS sensor and Sony’s G lens.

Sony’s mobile camera sensor quality is quite well known, specifically for its good low light performance, in fact the Japanese manufacturer counts Apple among its customers. (more…)

    Sony XPERIA Z2 Smartphone

Sony XPERIA Z2 SmartphoneIt is fair to say that the Sony XPERIA phone is the handset that marked Sony’s come back into the mobile phone scene, and it is only logical that the XPERIA Z2 was rather anticipated by Sony’s followers, but also by the industry at large. At Mobile World Congress, Sony puts an end to the rumors, and reveals the official specifications and design of its new high-end Android smartphone.

    High-end specifications

The XPERIA Z2 is equipped with a Snapdragon 801 (with 3GB of RAM), a 5.2-inch Full HD display and a 3200 mAh battery. It is clear that sony has listened to the customer feedback, notably about the battery capacity and has addressed the most important features that users cared about. The XPERIA Z2 seems very much like a slightly faster and better version of the Z1 released late last year. (more…)

    ZTE Nubia 5 Review

    ZTE Nubia 5 Review

In the U.S., there are several very well-known companies manufacturing popular smartphones on a regular basis. Companies like Samsung, LG and Apple are synonymous with mobile as their devices have gained in popularity over the years. ZTE is a company not many those in the U.S. are too familiar with as the company primarily offers their devices to the overseas market, but that doesn’t mean what they offer isn’t as competitive.

ZTE released its Nubia 5 a few months ago and its specs can easily compete with most of what’s currently available in the U.S. as it features a 5-inch 1080p display, a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP main camera, 2MP front-facing camera and a 2300mAh battery. This is just the tip of the iceberg as there’s more to the Nubia 5 than its high-end specs, so without further ado, let’s get into our review of ZTE’s latest smartphone.

Broadcom Forging Ahead With 300 Mbps Cat6 LTE

Broadcom Forging Ahead With 300 Mbps Cat6 LTE

Broadcom has recently demonstrated that its smartphone modem can communicate with a “live” 300 Mbps LTE commercial network. Although demonstrations using a similar technology have been done in the past, Broadcom says that it is the first to do so on a “live” network (in Finland) which means that a cell tower used to serve actual wireless customers was upgraded and used for the demonstration. The test device itself was only yards away from the tower to achieve the best speeds, but this is not unusual for that kind of demonstration.

I recently met with Scott McGregor (Broadcom’s CEO) and for him, this milestone shows that Broadcom has basically caught up to Qualcomm over the past two years since both companies have now announced their Cat6 LTE support within a week from one another. At this point in time, these are the only two companies that I know of that have reached this stage of LTE support. (more…)

iPhone 6 Release Date, Specs & News Round-Up

iPhone 6 Release Date, Specs & News Round UpThe iPhone 6 is probably one of the most highly-anticipated smartphones for 2014, although we guess this can be said for every iPhone launch which is partly due to the rumor mill which hasn’t exactly been helpful in tempering expectations. Now we’re not sure if this year’s rumors are any more (or less) true, but we have decided to round up what we have heard so far for those who might be feeling a little overwhelmed with all the rumors that have been flying by our heads the past few months.

Detachable vs. Clamshell Ultrabooks: What Side Are You On? [Promoted]

Detachable vs. Clamshell Ultrabooks: What Side Are You On? [Promoted]Promoted story: this post is brought to you by Toshiba

After mobiles phones, laptops are probably the second most personal devices we own, and now they come in more shapes and forms than ever before. The introduction of touch-screens to laptops has ignited a wildfire of industrial design creativity, which is why a PC manufacturer like Toshiba has to wonder what early adopters like you and us think of the difference between new designs like the Portégé Detachable Ultrabook, or something more classic like the Kirabook or other laptops like it. Given that both are so different, this has to be an apple vs. pears comparison, but it’s fair to say that budget usually allows the purchase of only one laptop – so when it comes down to it, which type would you get? Android Apps On Windows Phone? A Curious Possibility

Android Apps On Windows Phone? A Curious PossibilityIt is well known that the main weakness of Windows Phone is not the OS code, or even the last-gen hardware – it is in fact the relative lack of apps. And to be fair, the situation is not so bad in an absolute sense, but nearly every Windows Phone users that I know bump into this at some point: there is always an app that you really want, which is not available on Windows Phone.

I think that Microsoft understands that well, and they are doing quite a bit of work to address the situation, but new rumors suggest that Microsoft is considering the unthinkable: run Android apps in Windows Phone. (more…)

    Samsung Galaxy Round Review

Samsung Galaxy Round ReviewWhen it was announced, the Samsung Galaxy Round has sparked a lot of interest and curiosity since it is Samsung’s first phone that comes with a slightly curved display. Interestingly, although the underlying AMOLED display is somewhat “flexible”, the phone itself is curved. There was a lot of preconceptions (if not misconceptions) about what a “curved” phone should look like, or whether it should exist at all.

Some said that it should “roll completely” (what’s the point of a stick-phone if it occupies the same volume?), while others didn’t see any value in a curve design, calling it a “gimmick”… well, if  “design” variations was a gimmick, maybe we should all wear the same shoes. After all, they all protect our feet, and that’s all we want right? Of course not… Let’s look at the Galaxy round as we would with any other phone: how does it feel? What does it do for you? How good is it in the real world? By the end of this review, you will have the answer to all these questions. (more…)

Nokia Normandy/ Nokia X Release Date, News & Specs Round-Up

Nokia Normandy/ Nokia X Release Date, News & Specs Round UpWindows running on a Mac? Windows Phone running on a Nokia handset? An Intel processor in an Apple machine? All of these did sound extremely improbable at one point in time in the past, but this does not mean that they are impossible. I guess those are the modern day technological equivalents of the four minute mile, and right now we have the Nokia Normandy, also known as the Nokia X, which is an upcoming smartphone that is also rumored to run on Android operating system, which would make it a surprising first for the Microsoft-acquired Finnish company, especially when they have been the staunchest supporter of the Microsoft Windows Phone platform for so long.
