Ubergizmo Giveaway: Five Nexus 7 Tablets To Win!

It’s an early Christmas at Ubergizmo, and we are joining forces with NVIDIA to give away five Nexus 7 tablets (16GB, WiFi). In our Nexus 7 Review, we called it the ‘best 7-inch tablet’, and 5 months after its arrival onto the scene, it remains a formidable value-proposition as it offers great hardware, a pure Android experience and quick access to the latest OS updates and features.

So, who wants one? :) … Read the rules in the full post to enter. (more…)

Netflix works pretty well and appears to be in 720p

Presented at CES 2012, the Samsung ES8000 Series has been introduced earlier this year to the US market. In this review, we are taking the 60-inch Samsung UN60ES8000 for a field-test to see how new features such as voice control, motion control and face recognition work in the real world. More importantly, we will cover the image quality and smartTV aspect of this series of HDTV as it promises that you will not only need an external “box” to stream top Internet content, but also that you won’t need to change television to upgrade to the latest internal hardware, thanks to the processor upgrade option. Finally, it’s hard not to mention the industrial design that is ultimately one of the most important criteria if the “television” qualities can be established. Let’s take a closer look… (more…)

Visualized: Qualcomm’s patent wall

Visualized Qualcomm's patent wall

Just like how a rock star would hang all of his or her vinyl records on the wall, Qualcomm has a dedicated “Patent Wall” at its San Diego headquarters to show off 1,395 of its patent files. But that’s just a fraction of the 13,000-something patents owned by the company, of course. Sadly, we weren’t allowed to take photos of Paul Jacobs’ pool of gold coins behind that wall.

Meizu MX2 packs 16GHz quadcore chip, 44inch display and Jelly Bean, due midDecember

Amidst the fierce competition in the Chinese mobile market, Meizu has managed to keep up with its annual cycle to unveil its latest flagship device, the MX2. Announced at the launch event in Beijing earlier today, the MX2 comes with a Samsung-made 1.6GHz, Cortex-A9 quad-core SoC dubbed “MX5S,” along with 2GB of RAM, a 30-percent faster GPU, a 4.4-inch 347ppi (1,280 x 800) gapless display with 3.15mm bezel and efficient “New Mode 2” technology (the description of which sounds like IGZO to us), an improved eight-megapixel BSI F/2.4 camera and a choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of built-in memory. There’s also a front-facing camera, dual-mic noise cancellation, MHL video output, S/PDIF audio output, a non-removable 1,800mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0 and HSPA+ radio at 2,100MHz (2G at 900/1800). As before, the white double injection-molded back cover can be taken off to access the SIM card slot, but there should also be various color options in the near future. Read on for more info, and do also check out the official introduction video after the break.

Update: We now have some hands-on photos courtesy of Stone Ip from Engadget Chinese. They’re in the second gallery below.

Nokia Lumia 920 Review

With widespread availability (except if you want to get an off-contract Lumia 920), we have purchased a retail unit of the Lumia 920 to write this complete review. This is the final hardware and it ships with the launch release of Windows Phone 8: this is what you may end up owning.

The Lumia 920 is Nokia’s shot at being the reference smartphone for Windows Phone 8, and as such Nokia has equipped it with what the company calls PureView which means that it’s supposed to have an awesome camera. For this new generation of Lumia, Nokia has kept the original Lumia style and manufacturing technology. We found it beautiful before, and overall Nokia has done a great job with the design again.

The display has been significantly improved, thanks to Windows Phone 8’s new support for higher resolutions. But Nokia is more than a smartphone manufacturer, it is also a map and software builder, so Nokia phone benefits from software that none other have. This sounds great, but how does it look in the real world? Lumia 920 critics are quick to point out that its size and weight are its weak points. In the full review, we will address every single of these questions. Are you ready?

Xiaomi Box taps the Chinese smart TV market on the cheap, flirts with AirPlay (hands-on)

Xiaomi Box taps the Chinese smart TV market on the cheap, we go handson

The Apple TV may not be officially available in China, but there are already plenty of cheap Android TV dongles and set-top boxes over there to keep the folks occupied. That said, many of them don’t offer a satisfying multimedia experience, so even for a latecomer like Xiaomi, there’s still space for competition. Having just launched the much anticipated Xiaomi Phone 2, the Chinese startup recently announced that it had acquired digital content provider Duokan for some time, and the first fruit is this conveniently named Xiaomi Box. Even with the bundled one-meter HDMI cable, the pebble’s priced at a competitive ¥399 (about $64) and we’ve been told it’ll be available in mid-December. Better yet, it claims to be compatible with AirPlay right out of the box! Read on to see if that’s the case with our pre-production unit.
