Kindle Fire HD Hands-On

Yesterday, at an event in Santa Monica CA, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the Kindle Fire HD. The device comes in two flavors, 7-inch and 8.9-inch, and they will retail for $199 and $299, respectively, with the former shipping from September 14th onwards while the latter will see a November 20th release date.

The most interesting is certainly the 8.9-inch 4G LTE version featuring 32GB of internal memory and  priced at $499 with a $49.99 per year data plan!

On paper, the specifications and pricing look awesome, the processor is powerful enough and runs a decent GPU for gaming purposes. As for the display size and resolution, they are great, with a thin form factor (8.8 mm for the 8.9-inch) and weight (20 ounces for the 8.9-inch) that make it more comfortable to carry than the iPad.

I played with the 7-inch version which is certainly a serious competitor to the Nexus 7. We could not play with the 8.9-inch model. Read the complete article to discover my first impressions.

Tonino Lamborghini L2800 tablet and TL700 phone rumble in Hong Kong, we go hands-on (video)

Tonino Lamborghini L2800 tablet and TL700 phone launched in Hong Kong, video

Looks like Russia isn’t the only place with an appetite for overly expensive gadgets. Following the original launch last month, two of the four latest Tonino Lamborghini devices have made their way over to Hong Kong. Pictured above is the L2800 tablet which has since been upgraded from Android 2.3 to 4.0.3, but the hardware remains the same: a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm chip, 9.7-inch 1,024 x 768 display, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and microSD expansion, along with 3G connectivity, two- and five-megapixel cameras front and back, four obviously redundant capacitive buttons, 7,500mAh battery and, sadly, a proprietary dock connector. All of this plus the nicely crafted titanium chassis weigh 850g, and it’ll cost you just HK$13,800 or about US$1,780. Hey, quit moaning — it’s a massive reduction from the US$2,320 price tag in Russia.

Motorola Photon Q Review

The Motorola Photon Q is the company’s QWERTY slider smartphone for the Sprint network. It is a cousin of Verizon’s Droid 4, works on Sprint’s LTE network and has worldwide roaming capabilities. As you may have suspected, this is a smartphone built for productivity and for global travelers.

It is great, you would ask, but you can get a Blackberry to get great text capability and a great keyboard. Maybe so, but if you are even looking at this review, this means that you already know the benefits of having an Android phone: better apps, better OS, better web experience.

Now the question is: how good is the Motorola Photon Q at all of this? That’s exactly what we’re going to try answering in this review. Ready? (more…)

Nokia Lumia 820, Lumia 920 PureView: What We “Know” [rumors compilation]

Well ahead of its launch event for the range of Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 devices, a number of leaks have afforded us a glimpse on the possible devices we may see at the event. The purported leaks have come from Evleaks and show images of two new Lumia devices – Nokia Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 PureView.

We expect Nokia to unveil both of them, officially, at its Sept 5 event. These will be the first Windows Phone 8 offerings from the company. 920 PureView, in particular, is expected to pack a powerful hardware and will hopefully be touted as the flagship device on the Windows Phone 8 lineup. It features a 4.5” display and the PureView camera technology. The leaked images show the device to be available in three colors – gray, red and yellow. (more…)

Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes Intro+Gameplay Video

Metal Gear Solid (MGS) fans have undoubtedly seen the first Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes images last week when the game was revealed in Tokyo for MGS’ 25th anniversary event. Obviously, you all wanted to see the video, which is a must-see for all gamers, so here it is: the official video trailer that shows both cinematic scenes and game play sequences rendered with the Konami’s Fox Engine. Not only the game engine looks great, but it is also designed to run on PS3 and Xbox 360 as well. Now the question is: how good will this look on current-gen consoles?

Motorola’s next phone allegedly full-screen = frameless

This past week was particularly rich in news, thanks to the IFA event in Germany, but next week will be equally interesting given that Motorola and Nokia are going to launch their high-end smartphone offering for 2012. Both events happen on Sept 5 and Ubergizmo will be there to provide full coverage, so mark your calendars (9am ET and 2pm ET)!

The stakes are high, and from what is leaking out ahead of the launch, Motorola will feature a phone that was described by Bloomberg as being a “full-screen” phone, which means that there is little to no frame at all around the display.

This would be consistent with Google’s view since Android 4.0 where the physical front buttons became superfluous. If you missed it, Google acquired Motorola Mobility for $12B, partially to help in the patent war with Apple, and the upcoming launch should be the first major handset launch since the acquisition. The new Motorola phone is going to launch on the Verizon network.

If true, a frameless design could provide quite a boost for Motorola, and bring fresh novelty in an extremely competitive space. The phone will go against the next iPhone, which seems to be yet another evolution of the current iPhone 4S, with a thinner and (very) slightly longer design. From what we can tell, Samsung does not plan to launch another major device now that the Galaxy Note 2 has been announced.

What’s your take? Is frameless hot or not? Drop a comment!

Sony XBR-84X900 4K LED TV eyes-on: Amazing

If you are a TV enthusiast, you have undoubtedly heard of the new Sony XBR-84X900 LED TV. If you haven’t, this new television from Sony was just announced at IFA and we’ve covered the launch as it was announced. It has a 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, which is exactly four times as many pixels as today’s 1080p standard.

Tradeshows are not always a great place to look at these TVs since the lighting is so over-the-top, if not outright weird. So instead, we headed for the Sony Store in Palo Alto, where we where the Sony XBR-84X900 is currently on display. Phil Molyneux, Sony Electronics USA’s COO was very proud to show us the capabilities of this TV set. Here’s a photo of him next to the television so that you can have a sense for how big 84″ is. Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Preview

As expected, Samsung has launched the Galaxy Note 2, which is even larger than the original Galaxy Note. Many didn’t think that this was possible to make it larger, but Samsung did, and they have pushed the concept of the Galaxy Note phone to the next level.

First, the design is beautiful, and although it comes in two colors, I have to admit that I like the pearl white version better. In many ways, it looks like the first Galaxy Note, but with some traits of the Galaxy S3 as well. The combination of both designs yields a winner here. Beyond the appearance, there are three things that have been improved by quite a bit. (more…)

If Google cannot protect Android device Makers, maybe Microsoft can

Windows Phone 8

A Silicon Valley jury has just proved that user interface elements, including some that can appear “basic”, like and have been proven to be invented before the iPhone, could possibly no longer be used in a commercial product without risking the (legal) wrath of Apple along with substantial financial damages. As you may know, Samsung has been slapped with a $1B damage decision in the Apple vs. Samsung case. This case may reverberate into the whole Android hardware eco-system.

Of course, there is going to be a Samsung appeal, and the final fine may fall down substantially. However, in a space where margins can be slim, the risk of legal claims hurting the bottom-line may prove to be too big of a burden for Android handset makers. While Samsung is strong enough to bear this type of shock, both from a financial point of view and from an intellectual property point of view (50% of the iPhone 4S’ components are from Samsung), most Android hardware makers may not be able to. Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 and LifeBook T902 convertibles show up with Windows 8, we go hands-on (video)

Fujitsu Quattro Q702 and Tercel T902 Windows 8 laptops handson

The annual Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival is usually just flooded with discounted computer products and booth babes, so we were pleasantly surprised when we spotted a couple of unreleased Windows 8, dual-digitizer devices at the Fujitsu booth. Pictured above is the Stylistic Q702 “Quattro,” an 11.6-inch tablet-cum-laptop that was announced last month. This particular unit sported an Intel Core i5-3427U chip (capped at 2.3GHz instead of 2.8GHz), a vibrant IPS panel, a fingerprint scanner, front and back cameras, 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD — twice the announced capacity, for some reason. Much like the ASUS Transformers, undocking the tablet was only a matter of pulling the latch on the hinge, but we found the latch to be rather stiff to operate. Hopefully this is just a prototype issue. Other than that, we just wish the final keyboard dock will somehow get a slight weight reduction: for the screen size, 1.88 pounds isn’t too bad for the tablet alone, but together with the heavy keyboard, the Q702 could become a nightmare for regular travelers.

The second prototype lurking at the back of the booth was the bulkier LifeBook T902 “Tercel,” a 13.3-inch convertible laptop that was unveiled alongside the Q702 last month. According to its label, this swivel-hinged machine packed a Core i7-3520M, 8GB of RAM, 500GB 7,200rpm hard drive, Blu-ray burner, LTE radio and a 72Wh (6,700mAh) battery. Oh, and there’s also a fingerprint scanner below the display. While the software failed to reverse the screen rotation after we flipped the screen back to laptop mode, it was in general just as responsive as the Q702, though the hardware felt more solid and ready. With this in mind plus the Windows 7 label and Wacom label below the keyboard, we wouldn’t be surprised if the T902 comes out before the Q702. Until then, feel free to check out our impromptu hands-on video of the Q702 after the break.
