Gionee Elife E7 boasts most sensitive 16MP camera, 2.5GHz Snapdragon 800

Gionee isn’t exactly a name that you’d come across in the Western market every day, but this time, the Chinese company has big global ambitions. The latest proof is its Elife E7, a 5.5-inch 1080p Android phone that boasts two titles: it’s the first known phone featuring the 2.5GHz flavor of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chip (MSM8974AC); plus it has the most sensitive 16-megapixel camera, courtesy of its Largan M8 lens (though the aperture is still unknown) and 1/2.3-inch sensor with large 1.34µm pixels. Compared to the competition, Gionee believes this particular OmniVision sensor has the best balance between resolution and pixel size, and the phone maker even went as far as claiming this already beats the 1.12µm, 16-megapixel counterpart on the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy S 5. Of course, we’ll believe it when we get to properly test the E7’s camera ourselves.

    Nokia Lumia 2520 Review

    Nokia Lumia 2520 Review

Back in October, Nokia announced its first Windows RT 8.1 tablet, the Lumia 2520, that would attempt to bring the very best the company has to offer from their line of impressive Windows Phone 8 smartphones to the Windows 8 tablet world. The Lumia 2520 is Nokia’s first foray into the 10.1-inch tablet market as it offers a 1080p IPS display featuring +Gorilla Glass 2 technology, a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, a 6.7MP main camera with a Carl Zeiss lens that is capable of capturing video at 1080p at 60fps and a rather large 8000mAh battery. The Lumia 2520 also supports 4G LTE, which means if you have your own data plan for the tablet, you can use it while you’re on the go through your wireless carrier.

The Lumia 2520 reminded us of the Surface 2 when we first saw it as it looks to borrow some inspiration from Microsoft’s tablet, although Nokia certainly keeps the overall design and look of the tablet in line with its Lumia smartphones. With that said, let’s take a look and see just how the Lumia 2520 fairs as Nokia’s first 10.1-inch Windows RT 8.1 tablet. (more…)

MediaTek launches world’s first true octa-core mobile chip, first devices due end of year

Qualcomm’s nightmare has finally come true. Earlier today, MediaTek officially introduced the world’s first true octa-core mobile processor, MT6592, and the first devices to feature it are expected to arrive as soon as end of year. This 28nm chip packs eight low-power Cortex-A7 cores, and courtesy of the Heterogeneous Multi-Processing use model on top of ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, all eight cores can operate simultaneously — at up to between 1.7GHz and 2GHz, depending on the bin.

MediaTek pointed that Chrome can already make use of all eight cores, and likewise with some map apps, video players plus multi-window function. According to the company’s figures, the MT6592 manages to beat what appears to be the quad-core Snapdragon 800 in benchmarks, power consumption (as low as 40 percent) and temperature. Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro Review

Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro Review Lenovo introduced its original Yoga back in late 2012, which we were impressed with its ability to create an ultrabook that is able to have multiple functions, such as its ability to be used as a tablet or a stand. Since then, Lenovo re-introduced its Yoga as the Yoga 2 Pro, which improved on many of the ultrabooks internal specs, such as including Intel’s new 4th-generation Haswell processor, offering a QHD+ 3200 x 1800 display and some other fancy bells and whistles to make this appeal to fans of the original Yoga. We were able to go hands on with the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro just a few months ago, and after our short time with the tablet, we were left pretty impressed with some of the company’s improvements to the Yoga. With that said, let’s just see how impressed we’re left with the Yoga 2 Pro after we throw it to our hungry review wolves. I’m not sure what that meant. Let’s just get on with your review without the use of wolves, shall we? (more…)

    LG G Pad 8.3 Review

LG G Pad 8.3 ReviewAfter a rather successful re-entry in the high-end smartphone market, LG feels “ready” for the very challenging tablet market which is expected to grow by 30% every year as far as predictions go (2016). LG has studied people’s usage pattern and believe that form factors of 7” to 9” will represent more than half the tablet market by then, so 8.3” would be an ideal size to use.

LG’s data points also suggest that tablets are overwhelmingly used at home and where the studies really hit the nail in the head is when they present the contrast between consumers’ expectations (having a small “computer” in the PC sense) and reality: that they don’t carry tablets at all times and that it is not really fit to replace the computer. The conclusion that LG drew is that tablets have to co-exist with other devices, and that they need to have an ideal speed to size/weigh ratio. That’s how the LG G Pad 8.3 was born.

Now the question is whether or not it fulfills its goal of being the ideal tablet for what people “actually do” when they own tablets vs. what they wish they could do. Let’s take a closer look to see how the G Pad 8.3 performs in the real world.  (more…)

    LG G Flex: Hands-On

LG G Flex: Hands OnIf you thought that everyone had fired their last salvo of 2013 when it comes to high-end smartphones, think again: if you follow Ubergizmo, you knew that the LG G Flex was coming, but now we had a chance to play with one and there are several things that may surprise you: first of all, this is a large display phone with a 6” diagonal. However, it remains relatively small compared to the Lumia 1520 and the HTC One Max. Let’s take a closer look:
