2014 KIA Sorento test drive: luxury inside and out

With the new 2014 KIA Sorento there’s more to it than meets the eye. At first glance you’d think the 2014 model is the same as its predecessor, but after a closer inspection you’ll notice plenty of improvements. They’ve added a touch of class and luxury inside and out, updated the entire interior with a contemporary and “with the times” design, and even added an AWD option. Read on for our full thoughts and plenty of pictures from our KIA Sorento first drive.

main

With eye-catching styling, more chrome and less plastic, and a price point that surely will give you plenty of bang for your buck the new and improved 2014 KIA Sorento delivers quite the package. In case you missed it, this week we had the opportunity to enjoy some time with KIA down in Scottsdale, AZ, for their KIA First Drive event, and below is plenty of thoughts from their new Sorento.

Design

As far as styling and design at first glance you won’t notice too many differences, but most of the changes come under the skin and hood. However, KIA did manage to give the Sorento a “mid-life” facelift or change-up. While it’s mostly unchanged you’ll get a beautiful European-inspired design like the original with a few key differences. They’ve completely improved and redesigned both the front and rear fascia.

20130129_123311

While the sides and most of the body remains the same, it’s the front and rear bumpers that have been completely changed and redesigned. The pumper has been tweaked and improved, they’ve cut down on the cheap looking plastics and replaced them all with Chrome, and it now comes with trims including HID (High-Intensity) headlights and taillights, with LED daytime running light options too. The black plastics around the wheel frames have been removed to really give it a classy crossover look and feel.

With a new AWD and 19-inch alloy wheels option the KIA Sorento just keeps getting better and better. While their base model fits the same pricing strategy as the previous model, their new SX-L can push you all the way into $40k territory thanks to all the additional options, luxury, or bells and whistles. Some of those options include: AWD, Chrome tailpipe, power-folding side mirrors (heated), chrome roof rail racks, and more regarding the interior which we’ll cover below. They’ve really stepped up their game to offer everything from start to finish. The backup camera and detection comes standard, but the optional side blind-spot protection (with chime, pictured below) can also be had and was quite useful.

20130129_110256

Overall there really isn’t much to say regarding the design for 2014 aside from the changes to the bumper and interior, which we’ll talk more on below. The HID light options, daytime running lights, and slight taillight changes surely gives the 2014 model a different look, but most won’t notice them over the previous model. The Sorento has been popular and a hot seller in the US, and this fancier model to ring in the new year will only build on KIA’s success.

Interior and options

We mentioned the exterior didn’t have too many changes, but under the hood and skin is where KIA put forth tons of effort. The inside has everything you’d ever want, and need. KIA actually went as far as to say 80% of the interior was either changed or completely redesigned, and it certainly shows. From leather everything should you choose, panorama sunroof and more they’ve brought the heat to the Sorento. This is where price meets luxury. To continue on with the optional trims here’s some more additional choices. Integrated navigation and Google Maps to the 8-inch UVO infotainment system, an Infinity 10-speaker surround sound kit, full panorama sunroof with automatic power-shade and more. We then can’t forget about the power liftgate with adjustable height settings, 4-way power seats (even for second row) heated and cooled seats, ventilated seats (2nd row too), and finally a 3rd-row 50/50 split-folding seats choice. Did we mention the driver seat has memory foam, memory for position and even will adjust all the mirrors to the driver. Pretty neat right?

Some noteworthy upgrades is the addition of 3rd row seating getting a few extra inches, 10 speaker surround, AWD, and is just the right size (and price) for families. As far as the center console goes we have a redesigned and more comfortable layout, and the 8-inch TFT UVO system is dramatically improved. We’ll talk more on that below. They’ve added an optional 7-inch full digital display for the gauge cluster too. Something many will be happy to see.

Everything you’d expect to see from a fully loaded vehicle is present here. All the steering wheel controls are present and wonderful, that includes full controls for the entire infotainment system, and even the optional digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel. Then you obviously get Bluetooth, satellite radio options and everything that UVO has to offer.

KIA promises extra space for both the second and third row seating, although that was minimal. The optional heated seats for the second row was nice, but be careful as a child might kick that floor mounted button and quickly complain of the heat. In the end we were very impressed with the contemporary and elegant interior. It finally has the pristine condition and refinement the previous model was lacking. It isn’t all praise however. We still didn’t like the cheap plastic feeling doors (where your arm and elbow rests) and they could have improved on second and third row seating space a bit more. The panoramic sunroof does give passengers a more open and comfortable feeling. If KIA can continue to remove the cheap plastics with each generation this will surely be a top contender soon.

UVO Infotainment Center

The base LX model comes with a 4.3-inch display and backup camera, but after that any other model KIA’s impressive 8-inch TFT UVO 2.0 Infotainment system really comes to life. If you can manage, this is certainly worth the small bump in monthly payments. Being all about tech and gadgets here, this was a huge priority for us. We are happy to confirm the 8-inch display was one of the best we’ve seen to date in this price point, had extremely light glare issues, and the viewing angles were excellent. Being able to see everything clearly, even with the sun glaring through the panorama sunroof right on the display, it was still easy to read and made controlling it a breeze — and safe.

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 10.38.02 AM

Again just like the KIA Forte, see our coverage here, being able to instantly sync our iPhone, Android phone, and even a Blackberry for audio streaming over Bluetooth was incredibly easy. No fumbling through settings or reading of manuals required. The average soccer mom might not get it as quick as we did, but it certainly is easier than most. KIA made sure to focus on quality of the technology inside their cars for 2014. They didn’t just add in electronics to add them. It’s technology we actually want and need.

“It’s not just about providing technology in their cars, it’s delivering technology that makes sense.” — KIA VP of Marketing

Being able to pass off navigation directions to the 7-inch digital speedo and gauge cluster was one of my favorite features. This left the 8-inch infotainment system free to stream audio and album artwork, or even enjoy a video while the cars in park. Using Bluetooth or the wired USB 2.0 option album artwork was displayed, and streaming Pandora radio was never easier. We mentioned the dash was redesigned, and this is to blend the 8-inch screen with regular controls for a seamless experience. Being able to quickly change from media, radio, navigation, maps, and more all with dedicated buttons under the 8-inch screen made daily use easy and simple to understand. While we love on-screen controls, having everything be on-screen can be distracting for drivers so we applaud KIA in this regard. We all want our smartphones to be integrated into our vehicle and the Sorento does that in a simple, effective, and safe way.

Engine & Performance

Starting with a underwhelming 2.4-liter GDI dual CVVT 4-cylinder engine on the base LX model, everything else comes in a standard 3.3-liter GDI V6 option pushing 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. This went up a decent 14 hp compared to the previous 3.5L V6. Options include a front, or all-wheel drive. The new 2014 Sorento is also offered with FlexSteer technology like the Forte. Using FlexSteer the driver can choose between Comfort, Normal and Sport tuning for the Sorento’s electric steering.

20130129_121241

The new Torque Vectoring Cornering Control technology was neat, allowing the car to direct power to the rear wheels for additional help during icy or slippery wet conditions. This is something you’ll want to make sure is included in your purchase. Having briefly drove the 2012 model, it’s safe to say the refinement to the entire chassis, stiffer platform and better shocks – not to mention FlexSteer – you’ll certainly enjoy driving this around town or to the kids little league football game.

Our tour throughout the Scottsdale, AZ, desert really showcased the improved and beefed up shock absorbers. Taking the corners were tight and accurate, although we’re certainly no experts in this field. Overall on the road for a mid-sized crossover the Sorento was surprisingly keen and comfortable. They’ve also placed a huge amount of effort on inside car noise, and that seemed minimal given our speeds in excess of 60 MPH.

Wrap-Up

At first you wouldn’t look at the new 2014 model and think much has changed, but with around 80% of the vehicle seeing changes from top to bottom this really is an all-new and improved Sorento. With keyless entry and start coming standard, backup cameras, 8-inch infotainment systems and an improved V6 offering the Sorento should continue right where it left off in terms of popularity in America.

20130129_105327

The base LX model will hit the streets priced around $24,100 and $25.7k for the V6, then reaching $35,000 for the SX, and the top spot comes in at $38k for the Sorento SX-Limited series. The new and improved faster, cleaner, meaner, and luxurious 2014 Sorento should arrive on dealer showrooms and grace buyers garages sometime in the next month.

iOS 6.1 jailbreak arriving Sunday, here’s how to prepare

An official iOS 6.1 untethered jailbreak is just around the corner. Come Super Bowl Sunday, iOS users will once again be able to jailbreak the latest firmware in order to open up a world of customization on their iOS devices. However, we haven’t seen an untethered jailbreak since Apple released iOS 5.1.1 back in May 2012, so it’s definitely been awhile since avid jailbreakers have had anything to do. With that said, we’ve decided to refresh your brain and help get you on the right track towards a successful jailbreak before it officially releases on Sunday. Here are a few things you should do before you dive in.

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 11.46.34 AM

First off, make sure your iOS device is compatible with the iOS 6.1 jailbreak before you go any further. By this point, you might already know, but if not, a majority of iOS devices will be compatible. The ones that won’t be supported are the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, first- through third-generation iPod Touch, first-generation iPad, and the third-generation Apple TV.

If you’re still running iOS 5.1 and are jailbroken, it’s a good idea to make sure all of your Cydia tweaks are compatible with iOS 6.1 before you upgrade. Open up the Cydia app and start listing out the tweaks that you use, skimming through each tweak’s description to see if it’s compatible with iOS 6.1. Most of the time, the developer will mention some sort of warning if it’s not compatible.

cydia

Once you know which tweaks will and won’t work, decide at that point whether or not it’s worth it to upgrade, and be sure to keep in mind if iOS 6’s new features are also worth it. If any of the new features introduced in iOS 6 aren’t personally pleasing to you, it might be a good idea to just stick with iOS 5.1 anyway if you have an older iOS device.

slashgear-0001

If you’ve made it this far, then we’re assuming you’re ready to upgrade to iOS 6.1 and jailbreak your device. Go ahead and update through iTunes — DO NOT update OTA. One of the dev team members confirmed that the OTA iOS 6.1 update will have some issues with jailbreaking. Once you’re updated, you’ll then want to make sure you have an up-to-date backup using iCloud or iTunes. Not only will this backup save your butt when the jailbreak goes wrong, but it’ll also be useful when you need to restore apps and settings back to your device after you jailbreak. You’ll also want a backup of all your Cydia packages if you’re currently jailbroken, for which OpenBackup is perfect for this. Make sure you backup these Cydia tweaks before you upgrade to iOS 6.1, because you’ll lose your jailbreak once you update.

slashgear-0000

Once the iOS 6.1 jailbreak hits, you’ll then want to decide whether to do a clean jailbreak install, or jailbreak your device while keeping all your apps and settings intact. A fresh install will be quicker, and it’s a great way to start with a clean slate if you have a ton of clutter, but you can also use those backups to restore apps, settings, and Cydia tweaks. On the other hand, jailbreaking with your apps and settings intact takes longer, but you won’t need to restore any backups if everything goes smoothly. Be sure to decide which route you want to go before you start the process.

The Evad3rs dev team plans to release the iOS 6.1 untethered jailbreak sometime on Sunday. We’re not sure what time exactly the jailbreak will become available, but we’ll make an announcement when the time comes. You can head to the dev team’s website now and read through the FAQ and other notices they have posted. Hopefully, we’ll see the jailbreak earlier in the day before the Super Bowl, that way we can enjoy the game with our brand-new jailbroken devices, but we’ll simply have to wait and see. However, thanks to your preparations, you’ll be ready to go right away.

2014 KIA Forte test drive: luxury features in a compact sedan

The all-new redesigned 2014 KIA Forte made its debut at the LA Auto Show, and this week we were lucky enough to get up close and personal with the new driving machine for the KIA First Drive event. With tons of new features not seen before in the compact Sedan segment, new trim options, a sleek design and new FlexSteer handling modes this car surely brings handling and luxury prowess to the price point. Read on for details on their UVO infotainment system and more from our first hand experience below.

20130129_144608

With a revamped design and powertrain, new trim and engine options, the improved UVO Infotainment system and much much more the 2014 Kia Forte is poised to take on the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, and even the Toyota Corolla. The base LX model is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 148 horsepower and aims to bring fuel-efficiency direct to consumers. Then their EX model now features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated around 173 horsepower. There is plenty more to the new Forte than just that so lets take a look.

Design

With the 2014 Forte you’ll get a beautiful European-inspired design which was developed at the KIA Design Center in California, and you can obviously see pieces of their elegant Optima shining through the cracks. It’s lower to the ground than the original, slightly wider with a brand new powertrain, and is a dramatic departure from the previous model. KIA hopes to stun this particular market with a completely new level of sophistication and from our initial impressions they’ve done just that.

20130129_150341

At first glance you’ll quickly notice the elegant lines, smooth corners, and edgy LED infused headlights and taillights. Using a wrap-around design to keep the front clean and simple (not to mention aerodynamic) you can quickly see all the effort the California design crew put into the 2014 Forte. Offering an all-new chassis that is lower, wider and longer than the previous generation, driving and handling certainly was improved and stiff — in a good way. Electric power steering replaces hydraulics, but that’s where their new FlexSteer technology comes into play. Quickly tap the FlexSteer option located right on the steering wheel and you’ll be able to drive casually, or grip and rip the road and curves. Using Electronic power steering the weight will instantly change and driving styles are Normal, Casual, and Sport. We preferred the Normal setting to be honest, but can see the appeal.

Screen Shot 2013-01-30 at 10.47.15 AM

While the front has a unique design that almost looks like bug eyes, it’s still easy on the eyes and looks quite sharp. As mentioned above you can certainly see the design cues from the Optima — a car we can all agree is gorgeous. They’ve added in new 17-inch sport wheels to the EX offering, and all of this starts at just $16,000 in Q1 of 2013. Enjoy the gallery below of this stunning little sporty Sedan.

Interior

When we mentioned a new level of prowess and sophistication to this size and price class, a lot of that stems from the interior. KIA wanted to offer everything that we love from higher-priced cars, even for their Forte. They pulled out all the stops, didn’t hold back, and treated the Forte to the same elegance as others in the recent past. We’ll talk more on the UVO infotainment system below, but for now will focus on the interior as a whole.

Screen Shot 2013-01-30 at 10.35.37 AM

Even the entry-level LX model enjoys all the features and functions we’ve come to love in our cars. The Steering-wheel controls become your cockpit and controls nearly everything. From audio controls, their digital dash options (including navigation right between the speedometers) and more. Then you obviously get Bluetooth, satellite radio options, power windows and seats, and even powered mirrors. Both the mirrors and the seats are heated too, although not in the base model. On the EX you’ll enjoy both heated, and cooled seats. That was nice and comfortable while driving around in the Scottsdale desert, and surely will help all summer long.

Increasing to the EX trim (around $18k and up) brings you Kia’s improved and also revamped UVO infotainment system with backup camera, keyless entry and keyless start, and the same cooling features for the seats to the glovebox. Did we mention they brought their awesome leather interior with seamless designs and elegance to the Forte too?

screenshot-back

Some of the additional options include 17-inch sport rims over the 16′s, HID headlights, power sunroof, ventilated seats, dual climate control, heated rear seats (bottom) and even a heated steering wheel. KIA’s added illuminating door handles with proximity sensors too. That was neat. Another option is their 4.2-inch TFT display inside the meter cluster as mentioned above. That was a nice change. Having navigation in the meter cluster allowed the larger 7-inch display to keep playing tunes and showing album artwork for the rest of the passengers.

The only complaint I’d have for the interior would be the 10 degree angle on the 7-inch LCD display and UVO infotainment system. While this is angled to bring an easier experience to the driver, those in the passenger seat don’t get the best view. While it was a minor issue the angle also brought some epic sun glare direct to the passengers eyes at times. Something we could certainly do without. More on the infotainment system below.

Overall the new and improved trim options, leather interior and leather wrapped steering wheel, and all the other details mentioned above certainly makes the KIA Forte a real contender for the price. Getting some of these awesome (and needed) features all for around $18,000 sounds pretty nice if you ask us. The dash plastics of old have been replaced with an elegant and simple carbon fiber-esque look, and the rest was wrapped in premium leather for that luxury feel.

Engine and Performance

As we mentioned above the 2014 Forte now comes in two trims. One for the budget-minded who also wants luxury and fuel-efficiency, as well as the higher end EX for the sporty and high-end vibe. The base LX model is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 148 horsepower geared for fuel-efficiency and ease of use. Then their EX model now features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated around 173 horsepower. We enjoyed the fully loaded EX complete with all the bells and whistles. There’s also an optional Eco Package, which adds in “Idle, Stop & Go” (ISG) or Kia’s version of stop/start automatic engine control. Release the break at a stoplight and the engine quickly starts up again and you’re running without even noticing.

Screen Shot 2013-01-30 at 12.56.37 PM

We averaged an upwards of 37 MPG on the curved highway roads of the Scottsdale desert at times, but flying around corners and cranking up that 2.0-liter 173 horsepower engine quickly lowered our results. Gripping the corners was actually better than expected, and the FlexSteer option proved its worth by quickly tapping the steering wheel button transporting the car into “sport mode”. The new powertrain seemed sufficient given the price, but we’re no experts here. The entire car felt tight, stiff, and low to the ground and handling was stellar around turns.

The previous generation was criticized for its sluggish performance, but with the 2014 Forte EX you certainly won’t have that issue. While the speedo went up to 170 (which means nothing), sadly we weren’t able to test those limits. Again we want to mention luxury, because KIA wants to offer a near-luxury experience with this ride. The in-car noise from the road was rather quiet even at high RPMs and flying through the desert, and we were quite pleased with overall cabin noise. Something you’d expect from a luxury vehicle is nicely present with the Forte.

UVO Infotainment Center

Being tech and gadget lovers here at SlashGear, this was one of our favorite parts. Having an awesome 7-inch TFT touchscreen for all the controls you’d ever want (and need) all even in the entry-level model — we were extremely happy to try it out. KIA has introduced a second-gen UVO infotainment system powered by Microsoft, but sadly it doesn’t work with Windows Phone, or Android. Well it does, but their accompanying app and 10 year/100,000 miles free UVO services doesn’t. An Android version is in the works, but for now it only supports iOS.

20130129_143936

However, that doesn’t mean all smartphones don’t work. The UVO infotainment system easily paired with our iPhone, Android Phone, and even a blackberry for hands-free calling, streaming music and Pandora radio, and much more. Using the wired USB 2.0 port we were able to enjoy Album artwork from iTunes, as well as while playing Google Music on Android. Bluetooth pairing was simple on all devices, and really shows their attention to detail and the future. Call logs instantly populate on the display and our iTunes Playlists neatly appear too.

The UVO system uses an extremely simple user interface. Some are too confusing and try to be too fancy, that wasn’t the case here. With dedicated Media, Maps, Navigation and other hard buttons below the display for ease of use it allowed the actual screen to be simple and clutter free. Navigation was a breeze and as we mentioned earlier this year, KIA has partnered with Google Maps. You can send the map from your PC or smartphone right to the car with ease before a trip. Making the “get in and go” term even more useful for roadtrips. Pair that Galaxy S III to the car and you’ll be enjoying tunes on the 7-inch display, while following navigation on the optional 4.2-inch TFT meter cluster display we mentioned above.

“It’s not just about providing technology in their cars, it’s delivering technology that makes sense.” — KIA VP of Marketing

The above quote is pretty much the easiest way to sum up the interior design and UVO infotainment system of the new KIA Forte. They didn’t just throw in technology and steering wheel controls to do so, they put technology in their cars that works great, makes sense, and is easy to use. The fact that I didn’t have a single hiccup pairing multiple devices, or needed to read a single manual really made it earn bonus points in my book. Hopefully their accompanying app will get Android support in the future. It’s worth noting that KIA plans to bring full Siri support for iOS users to their UVO system in an update later this year.

Wrap-Up

Taking the all-new 2014 KIA Forte through the old Copper mining towns of Arizona and through the winding roads of the Tonto National Forest (forest full of Cactus) we certainly were impressed overall with the Forte. KIA certainly deserves bonus points from potential buyers for the balance of price, performance, technology and specifications it has managed to blend into the new Forte. The new and improved model for 2014 will undoubtedly outpace its predecessor, and quite likely the competition too.

20130129_150541

At the end of the day KIA has designed a beautiful car that’s loaded with goodies all for a great price. We get to enjoy a great audio system that is deeply integrated into our mobile lives, spacious interior for a “compact sedan” and luxury options you’d expect on a higher priced vehicle. Add in the new trim options and powerful 2.0-liter engine and KIA has a winner here. Only time will tell how it stacks up against the competition, but expect to see the all-new 2014 KIA Forte hit the roads next month.

BlackBerry Z10 Accessories hands-on: Bluetooth Speaker, Charger, holsters galore

This week the BlackBerry Z10 has been introduced as the first all-touch hero for BlackBerry 10, and along with it come a couple of lovely accessories we’ve gotten to see up close – speakers, batteries, and all! The BlackBerry Z10 is a smartphone that’s meant to represent BlackBerry 10 as both a business and a personal smartphone, this set of accessories therefor acting as extensions of that goal with both audio conferencing and all-day battery life in mind for you, the modern professional.

27786451_2R4ctv-18

BlackBerry Mini Stereo Speaker

The Bluetooth speaker you’re seeing here is not made to be hinged entirely on the success of the Z10, as it connects with Bluetooth to any device you’ve got handy. Being able to work with BlackBerry software for conference calls with its own microphone input and loudspeaker output will be fabulous for your future teleconference needs. This beast will be costing you MSRP $100 USD and has a unique shape made to clip on to the many belts in your life – seatbelt, messenger bag belt, or to simply sit on your desk quietly.

BlackBerry Z10 Battery Charger Bundle

The Battery Charger Bundle is a machine that’s made to be as sleek as possible in surrounding the Z10 unit specifically. You’ll be working with a spare battery that’s made for the Z10 which you can charge while you’re on the go, switching this and your primary battery out in the middle of the day or whenever you have the need to do so. With this simple accessory you’ll never again be without battery life. The Battery Charger Bundle will run you a mere $50 USD MSRP and will be available right around the same time as the Z10 hits stores across the USA and abroad.

Pocket, Transform Shall, Flip Shell, and Holster cases

The main case you’re seeing here is the Flip Shell, a fabulous horizontally flipping back cover for the Z10 that’ll have you sitting up with ease. The Holster and Pocket cases you’ll be seeing soon have magnets that turn the display off on the Z10 when they’re closed (or you slip the device inside, that is), and the whole lot will cost you between $30 and $40 USD each. The Shells will cost $35 USD each and the whole bunch will be hitting shelves right around the same time as the Z10 itself – can’t wait!

BlackBerry Z10 hands-on

This week we’re having an up close and personal look at the BlackBerry Z10, the very first all-touch hero for the new operating system known as BlackBerry 10. This machine is the first of two smartphones to use the operating system, the other being the touchscreen/QWERTY keyboard combination device BlackBerry Q10, both of these devices being prepped for 4G LTE action inside the USA and abroad. The BlackBerry Z10 is made to bring on the most impressive display ever offered by BlackBerry (formerly known as RIM) with 4.2-inches of LCD at 1280 x 768 pixel resolution (that’s 355 pixels per inch, if you’d like to know).

firstz10

This machine works with 2GB of RAM under the hood and a lovely 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor to keep you running powerfully into the night. The battery inside this device is 1800mAh strong and is removable and replaceable so you’ll be able to purchase extras for long no-power trips. Internal storage adds up to 16GB while you’ve also got a microSD storage slot for up to 32GB cards at a time.

The front-facing camera on this device is 2 megapixels strong and made for video chat while the back has an 8 megapixel shooter with singe LED flash. Bluetooth 4.0 is included inside as is wi-fi and NFC. The full unit weighs in at 4.8 ounces, that being a bit more than the iPhone 5 (4 ounces) and less than most of the main competitors in the field.

secondback

As you’ll be able to see in the photos here and the hands-on video above, the BlackBerry 10 operating system is based on gestures rather than home-buttons where each of the major mobile OS brands in the world rely on at least one central unit. Instead of said button, the BlackBerry Z10 has a rather pure-looking front facade with several physical buttons around its edges.

27786451_2R4ctv-8

This machine feels light to the touch but but not so light its uncomfortable, its touchscreen is as responsive (if not more responsive) than the leading touch-sensitive smartphones across the market today, and the software appears swift. We’ll be reviewing this device in full rather soon – until then, have a peek at the hands-on photos (and video immediately if not soon) and let us know if you’ll be picking up the Z10 in the near future!

BlackBerry Q10 hands-on

Today at BlackBerry‘s launch event in New York City, we saw the company officially unveil their new BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 smartphones running their new BlackBerry 10 operating system. The Q10 is the company’s latest smartphone with a physical QWERTY keyboard (obviously), and we ended up getting our hands on the new device to see what makes this thing tick.

20130130_164929-L

While we certainly love the full touchscreen of the BlackBerry Z10, those who prefer the more traditional physical keyboards of BlackBerry devices will definitely want to check out the Q10. However, it’s hybrid device of sorts, sporting both a touch interface and a physical QWERTY keyboard for those that want a little of both worlds.

The Q10 has a 3.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution 720×720, and it’s slightly larger than the Bold 9930 that its replacing. Plus, it sports a higher pixel density of 328 ppi The screen looks to be pretty vibrant, and saturation and contrast levels look superb. The back of the device as the camera and LED flash in the upper-right corner, and the blackplate has a nice carbon fiber look and texture to it that we find quite pleasant.

20130130_165203-L

Other than that, there’s volume buttons on the right side, as well as the necessary ports on the left side. The keyboard lights up as well with white LEDs that definitely give the Q10 a lot of attitude. While the 3.1-inch display may be incredibly small on paper, it really works on this device, and we can’t say that many people will have a problem with it.

2014 KIA Sorento and Forte First Drive

To kick off 2013 Kia Motors has already hit the ground running announcing three new vehicles to grip and rip the road. Those being the all new 2014 KIA Optima and Forte back at the LA Auto Show, followed by the new Forenza in Detroit. While they have plenty more to come this year, today SlashGear will be enjoying an exclusive first hand look (and test drive) with the first two. Today we’re proud to bring you live coverage from the Kia First Drive event in Scottsdale, AZ, for the all new Sorento and Forte.

20130129_094744

Kia has been on the forefront of design and elegance ever since they launched their extremely popular and redesigned Optima, and you can’t forget the unique yet edgy Kia Soul (see our review) and now we’re getting a look at their newest offerings. The all new just announced vehicles mentioned above have been completely redesigned for the new year, and we’ll be getting up close and personal with both. Today SlashGear will be taking part in the official Kia First Drive for these vehicles. Be sure to check back later today for our hands-on coverage while we take both rides for a spin through the desert and red rock mountains of Scottsdale, Arizona.

20130129_121710

Now the Kia Sorento might not look new at first glance, but for 2014 they’ve redesigned the front and rear facia, and then the important parts come under the skin and hood. The interior has been completely redesigned with Kia stating over 80% has been changed, tweaked, redesigned, or improved. Add in plenty of luxury amenities, a new 7-inch TFT gauge cluster, followed by their awesome 8-inch UVO infotainment system they’ve really set the bar. Being tech lovers here at SlashGear we’ll be sure to get up close with their new 8-inch UVO entertainment system, complete with Google Maps, and much much more.

You can see more from our announcement posts from earlier this year, but the new V6 offering, not to mention AWD options and more, KIA has really improved their offering for 2014 – so stay tuned after we take a quick drive with this baby today.

20130129_150341

Then we have the Kia Forte. With a radical new look, edgy yet aerodynamic lines, and a smooth Sedan design the Kia Forte for 2014 looks to take on the road full stride. Kia aimed to make this the best option available in its segment, while being elegant and sporty, and with the Forte they certainly deliver just that. With a new 2.0 4-cylinder engine pushing 173 horsepower and all the features and UVO infotainment that’s kept KIA users happy over the past year, the all new Kia Forte looks pretty impressive. We’ll be giving both of these vehicles a nice test drive and checking out the fresh interior later today.

Stay tuned right here to SlashGear for all of our live coverage, additional details, tons of pictures and much much more.

GeForce Experience Open Beta hands-on: optimization for all!

This week the teams behind the NVIDIA GeForce Experience have unleashed the Open Beta version of the software, available for download by not just the select few (40,000 users, to be fair), but the greater public – you can grab it now! This Open Beta allows you access to the one and only GeForce Experience, a system where the teams of professionals and undeniably powerfully-minded graphics know-it-alls of NVIDIA’s GeForce ranks have for you sets of optimizations for the games you play all the time. In short: your PC games are about to get a whole lot more awesome.

P1050158-580x326

This release has a limited number of games for which you’ll be able to get next-level optimization on your own GeForce-toting gaming PC. This release pumps up the availability of optimization beyond what the closed beta offered, with both Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad CPU support now ready for action. NVIDIA also added 2560 x 1440 display resolution support this time around – that having not been part of the closed beta release either.

With the GeForce Experience Open Beta you’ll see improved game detection logic as well as a collection of 41 games ready to look and work as magnificent as they’ve ever been on your machine. Having added FarCry 3, Mechwarrior Online, and the battle action heavy Hawken for this release, GeForce Experience is now able to work with 41 total titles. The rest are as follows:

Assassin’s Creed 3, Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Borderlands 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Counter-Strike:GO, CrossFire: Rival Factions, Crysis 2, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Diablo III, Dirt 3, DOTA 2, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, F1 2012, Fable III, Fallout New Vegas, Far Cry 3, FIFA 12, FIFA 13, Football Manager 2013, Hitman Absolution, League of Legends, Left 4 Dead 2, Mass Effect 3, Max Payne 3, Mechwarrior Online, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Planetside 2, Portal 2, Shogun 2: Total War, Star Wars The Old Republic, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, Team Fortress 2, The Secret World, The Sims 3, The Sims Medieval, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, World Of Tanks, and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria.

batman1

The actual app and usage therein is beyond simple. Once you’ve got it downloaded and open, you hit the scan button to see if there are any games on your machine that are part of the current list the GeForce Experience works with. The machine we’ve used here is an Alienware M17x R4 (see our full review here), and on it we’ve got none other than Batman: Arkham City (see our full review here) which the GeForce Experience software recognizes easily.

batman33

From there it’s just a button click or two more before we’ve got full NVIDIA-approved optimization of our settings, based entirely on the hardware/software combination we’ve got and ready for the best-case-scenario outcome when we kick out the gaming jams.

And that’s it! The simplicity of this app is part of the experience, the GeForce Experience being one that’s meant to be beyond simple. This environment makes certain everyone takes the time to optimize their machines with as easy a process as possible so that NVIDIA’s GeForce graphics can do their work as well as possible – and everything looks and handles hot!

This release includes upgrades in performance for client startup, game scan, billboard display, and nothing less than straight up communication with NVIDIA as well. If you’re all about getting some fantastic support for your games straight from NIVIDA, it’s time you headed over to the GeForce Experience Beta download page and had at it. This release works with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista, and is just 9.16 MB in file size – make it yours!

Bonus! Have a peek at the two videos below direct from NVIDIA – the first was filmed at the CES 2013 event we attended (see the timeline below for more info) with the bossman talking about the release iteration of GeForce Experience. The other video shows the app again in simple terms with fancy graphics flying everywhere – hot stuff!

Samsung ATIV Odyssey Hands-on and Unboxing

This afternoon we’ve gotten our hands on the Samsung ATIV Odyssey for the first time off the showroom floor, and this Windows Phone 8 combination with Samsung hardware prowess is looking like a winner right out of the box. This machine is going to be available to you starting today from Verizon complete with 4G LTE and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core 1.5GHz processor under a lovely 4-inch WVGA display. Will this new Samsung hero for the Windows Phone 8 universe be enough to take out the Nokia Lumia 822 and HTC Windows Phone 8X competition?

IMG_7676

This machine is smooth to the touch, has a hard plastic back and sides, and makes little effort to differentiate itself (on the outside) from the Samsung Focus 1 and 2 as far as basic aesthetics go. When it comes to the actual largeness of the display, the brightness, the color, and the innards of this device as well, you’ll find that the ATIV Odyssey is a whole new show. In addition to working with a microSD card slot with the ability to hold 64GB cards, you’ll find this device more than ready to move forward with Microsoft’s newest mobile operating system as well.

IMG_7669

With a 2,100 mAh battery under the back panel of this machine we’re expecting some rather excellent up-time across the day. We’ve also got a 5 megapixel camera on the back, a 1.2 megapixel camera on the front, and Qualcomm’s support for image processing inside that Snapdragon – so we’re expecting some lovely photo and video results in the very near future. This machine comes with 1GB of RAM to handle the most powerful apps available for Windows Phone today, and the full package seems to be, at the moment, a rather solid package for the Microsoft-loving masses.

The gallery you’re having a peek at here includes a small set of photos taken with the camera on this phone. Note that the photos taken of the biker are taken through a window, so they are a bit more hazy than they would be had they been taking without said window outside. We’ll have more photos and demo video in the final review, coming up soon!

This beast will be available to you starting on January 24th, 2013 for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a sign-up with an agreement for two years of service with Verizon.
