FedEx Non-chalant About Drone Deliveries

FedEx Non chalant About Drone DeliveriesDrone deliveries could be the next big thing when it comes to courier services. Just ask Amazon with their Amazon Prime Air program, as well as UPS and DHL who are looking into the possible integration with their existing services. How about FedEx who has long claimed to deliver to the world on time? It seems that FedEx has dabbled in the world of delivery drones, but they are none too thrilled to introduce the concept into the market.

FedEx CEO Frederick Smith, who spoke with Wall Street analysts during their quarterly earnings call, laughed when approached concerning the topic of delivery drones, and shared that their Chief Information Officer was looking into the situation. Robert B. Carter, FedEx’s Chief Information Officer, is a quadrotor enthusiast, and his most recent drone research results pointed to a drone that can “operate about eight minutes and carry about four Budweiser beers,” which hopefully, was said in jest rather than seriousness. Do you think that delivery drones will one day be the ideal way of getting packages arrive in front of your doorstep? Are there any existing services that have been totally computerized and automated at the moment, that you miss the human touch?

Dear UPS, This Is Not How You Ship a Gadget

So I was on vacation last week, and came back to the usual mountain of 700+ emails and piles of junk from PR companies Katamaried all over my desk. There was also this.

Just a Reminder That FedEx Doesn’t Give a Crap About Your Packages

It can be FedEx. It can be UPS. It can be any shipping service, really. They all promise to get your packages to where you want them to go but there’s no guarantee they’ll treat your packages with any sort of tender, love or care. Most likely, they’ll be thrown around, banged around and destroyed in the process. Just look at this FedEx employee have fun tossing FedEx packages into her truck. I can see the appeal of chucking boxes but doesn’t this just create chaos and add more work later?

FedEx Now Accepts Signatures For Deliveries Through Mobile App Update

Getting a package delivered to your home can be quite the experience as we often feel like a kid on Christmas Day wondering what wonders was delivered to us today. But having the actual delivery person leave a package at your front door while you’re in the shower can be tricky, and has probably left you enraged, especially when your entire day revolves around a particular package. FedEx knows your pain, and as a result, has updated its mobile app to make the experience of receiving your packages from them a little bit better.

The FexEx Mobile app received an update today that now makes it possible for you to sign for your packages, reroute a package to another address or provide delivery instructions to the driver. The new functionality is a part FedEx’s new Delivery Manager feature, which is similar to UPS’ “UPS My Choice” service. And just like UPS My Choice, you’ll need to sign up for FedEx’s Delivery Manager feature, although it’s a completely free service to use, as long as you don’t consider time to equal money.

Shipshape: Tracking 40 Years of FedEx Tech

FedEx’s 40-year history is about far more than an unimaginable number of overnight deliveries. It’s a case study in creating a service, then pushing technology forward to ensure that service actually works on a large scale. When it absolutely, positively …

A Dumb Truck Makes Me Feel Like We’re Living In The Future. What About You?

Nothing seems very futuristic to me. Not my phone, not my tablet, not my computer, not my TV, not my watch. None of it. We don’t have flying cars and we have hoverboards that don’t hover. What sort of world are we living in? Google’s Glass is very futuristic but we’re still a long ways away from it actually working the way they want us to think it’s going to work. And that’s fine. But there must be some things we’ve all seen that make us feel as if we’re living in the future or that look futuristic, right? More »

FedEx makes shipping packages to Facebook friends easier with new ‘Ship to Friends’ app

FedEx makes shipping packages to Facebook friends easier with new 'Ship to Friends' app

What’s better than saving some precious and valuable time, right? Well, if you’re a power Facebook resident and FedEx is your carrier of choice, then you’ll be happy to hear all about Ship to Friends. With this new Facebook app, the company previously known as Federal Express will make it easier for you to send your friends packages without ever having to virtually step out of Zuck’s social network. Essentially, this means you’ll be able to simply select a user from your Friends list, add the necessary shipping info and, finally, choose the delivery speed (i.e. Premium Choice or Best Deal) and pay for the service — naturally, however, you’ll still have to get the package ready and drop it off at the nearest FedEx shop. Unfortunately, Ship to Friends is only available to Stateside folks for shipments within the US, and FedEx made no mention of when, or if, it plans to start offering its new handy service elsewhere.

FedEx planning surge volume event on the 21-24 September, coincides with rumored iPhone release date

Apple logoMany believe that the 21st of September could be when Apple will release the iPhone 5, but unfortunately that date cannot be confirmed yet. Hopefully Apple’s 12th of September announcement will reveal those details. However the folks at MacRumors have learnt that FedEx is planning a surge volume event on the 21st to the 24th of September which appears to coincide with Apple’s iPhone release date. Of course given that FedEx deals with thousands of companies, not just Apple, it would be slightly arrogant of us to presume that this might have anything to do with the iPhone.

However as MacRumors have pointed out, FedEx is Apple’s choice of shipping partner for US deliveries, sometimes turning to alternatives such as USPS during periods of heavy demand, so perhaps this speculation might not be too far off the mark. Either way with less than a week to go to the big day, we guess we won’t have long to wait to see if all these iPhone rumors and speculations come true, so stay tuned!

Dropbox now lets you print documents at FedEx Office retail stores, online too

Dropbox now lets you print documents at FedEx Office retail stores, online too

The cloud locker behemoth that is Dropbox has taken to Twitter to announce it’s now allowing users to “easily” print documents at FedEx Office stores, both retail and online. But just how “easy” is it, really? Well, the physical deal’s fairly simple: head over to the nearest FedEx Office shop and self-serve yourself to a friendly three-step method, which includes picking Dropbox as the service of choice (there’s also Box and Google Docs), entering the appropriate credentials and, naturally, selecting whatever doc you’re looking to print out. Unfortunately, both companies failed to mention how much the handy service will cost, but we can’t imagine it’d be much different than the fees you’re accustomed to now.

FedEx website allows direct printing from Box, Google Drive, and Dropbox

If you happen to have some documents stashed in the online cloud known as Box, Google Drive and Dropbox, here is some news for you that you might want to consider taking advantage of the next time you need to print something urgently – FedEx has just expanded their cloud operations recently, where you are now able to print documents right from Google Drive, Dropbox, and Box, directly from FedEx’s copiers, with the other route (to proverbial Rome) being the clever use of the web interface. The expanded options will enable you to perform a log in to your cloud storage accounts, where you can subsequently choose and pick the kind of documents that you want to print without having to go through the hassle of transferring documents between apps – and act that is certainly not fun doing when it comes to compact, mobile devices.

Known as FedEx Office Print & Go and FedEx Office Print Online, the newly introduced integration with cloud-based document storage services Box, Dropbox and Google Drive, which includes Google Docs, will basically pave open the way for on-demand printing of files that are stashed online, and you have over 1,800 FedEx Office stores around the US to help you get your printing done, especially when it is urgent.
