Final Fantasy III Headed For PC (Rumor)

Final Fantasy III Headed For PC (Rumor)Square Enix has had quite a fair number of single player RPGs in the past that were epics, and out of sheer necessity at that point in time simply because the infrastructure back then did not really manage to support multiplayer RPGs in the same way that we know of today. Having said that, some of those titles happen to be classics today, such as Final Fantasy III. In fact, it has been almost too long since we have seen Square Enix show a remote amount of interest in delivering single-player RPGs to the PC platform. Apparently, the German ratings board has just published its grade for the PC port of Final Fantasy III, which means that there is a very real possibility of this once rare RPG (as it has already been released on other handheld platforms such as the Nintendo DS, iOS devices and Sony PSP) appear on Steam alongside the likes of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII.

Final Fantasy III happened to be the first title in the series that actually defined ‘jobs’ in the game properly, where thieves could use “Steal” while Dragoons started to make use of “Jump”. The main characters comprise of a quartet of orphans, and with a PC release, hopefully they will gain some named recognition.

Do bear in mind this remains a rumor until mentioned otherwise via an official statement or press release by the folks over at Square Enix. Still, it is nice to be able to dream, isn’t it?

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn Allows PS3 Users To Upgrade For Free To PS4

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn Allows PS3 Users To Upgrade For Free To PS4Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, a title that has seen 1.5 million registered users within a short time of its launch, is now live on Early Access for the Sony PS4 ahead of its April 14 launch (got to love how they make sure that the launch date, too, has the number 14 in it). Interestingly enough, Square Enix has announced that current PS3 users are able to start to upgrade their game to the PS4 platform.

Just how does this actually work? Those who basically own the PS3 version of the game will not be required to pick up another copy for PS4, but do bear in mind that this is a one way ticket with no chance of turning back – once you have upgraded to the PS4 system, you are unable to access the PS3 version of the game any more.

During the upgrade process, expect the entire slew of data, ranging from characters to in-game items, to be carried forward to the PS4 version of the game, where you do so by registering the PS3 title to the Final Fantasy 14 service account prior to upgrading via Mog Station. You have until the end of this year to enjoy this upgrade system for free, but remember that time flies by quickly if we do not set a personal deadline for ourselves.

FF14′s Producer Explains Why They Chose The Subscription Model

FF14s Producer Explains Why They Chose The Subscription ModelBack in the day when one wanted to play an MMORPG, they’d be faced with a subscription fee. This fee meant that gamers had to fork out money every month if they wish to continue playing the game. However in the recent years, more developers have turned towards the free-to-play model.

This means that the game will be free to play without a monthly subscription, but will make money by selling in-game items, like costumes, weapons, and so on. Is it inevitable that this is where MMORPGs will be headed into the future? According to Final Fantasy’s producer, maybe not. (more…)

Original Final Fantasy XIV’s Downfall Was Due To Overly Designed Flowerpots (Amongst Other Things)

Original Final Fantasy XIVs Downfall Was Due To Overly Designed Flowerpots (Amongst Other Things)When Square Enix first announced that they’d be attempting a Final Fantasy MMORPG, safe to say many gamers were thrilled by that news. The game was launched to much anticipation and hype, only to fall flat on its face shortly after, leading to Square Enix to relaunch it several years later as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

So what was it that led to the original Final Fantasy XIV doing so badly? Well turns out Square Enix was magnanimous enough to share their thoughts on the failed game during a presentation at GDC, and according to the developers, overly detailed flowerpots was one the problems and was actually a symptom of a much larger problem. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII DeviantART Contest: Current Fashion

Before its Diablo III art contest, DeviantART also held a competition for another major video game – Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. The contest called for the art community’s members to show their own take on the heroine Lightning. The entries were judged by none other than Square Enix’ artist, designer and director Tetsuya Nomura.

The contest was held last month, from February 11 to February 20. Out of the 4,655 submissions, Nomura – known for his character designs for Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, X and XIII and the Kingdom Hearts series – chose three grand prize winners.

Below is Nicolas Barge’s winning piece, of which Nomura said, “At first glance it looks like a CG, and it has a level of quality that makes it look like it was captured as a screenshot.  While there were many heroic costumes for Lightning, I was drawn to the femininity of this costume and her hairstyle.”

Nomura was also impressed by Randis Albion’s piece, saying, “It’s wonderful as an illustration, but in addition to that, the artist drew in both the front and back views, so I felt the artist’s clear intent when they created this piece. The red and blue color scheme was very beautiful, too.”

Marga Donaire’s submission is one of my favorites among all of the entries, and it sounded like Nomura felt the same way too: “With one look I was hooked. The costume itself is sophisticated, and it’s also very well done as an illustration. The background that reminded me of the Japanese flag (Hinomaru) matched well with the piece and was beautiful.  As an artist, when I look at different works of art, I think to myself “If it were up to me, I would do it differently,” but that thought didn’t cross my mind once when I saw this picture.”

As if earning praise from such an accomplished artist wasn’t enough, Nicolas, Randis and Marga also won an original sketch from Tetsuya Nomura, a custom Xbox 360 and controller, $1000, a keychain, a shirt, and copies of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. They were also featured on the front page of deviantART. Congrats guys! Switch to your browser costume and head to deviantART to check out all of the entries.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Could Be A Possibility

Square Enix must surely have been approached a fair number of times in the past, where they were asked about the possibility of remaking Final Fantasy VII – an original which many believed could never be surpassed in terms of the game’s greatness. Well, a new round of fresh rumors concerning a Final Fantasy VII remake has begun yet again, and this time around, the rumor’s source has been traced to NeoGAF member Verendus. Verendus claims to be an industry insider who has had a fair amount of hits in the past, where in an interview with Final Fantasy VII director Yoshinori Kitase, Kitase mentioned, “… you must believe me when I say it would take a lot to happen,” when posed with the eternal question of a Final Fantasy VII remake.

Future Final Fantasy Titles Could Arrive For PC

Future Final Fantasy Titles Could Arrive For PCWe’re sure there are Final Fantasy gamers out there who own consoles and have played many of the Final Fantasy titles in the past. Unfortunately for the most part, Final Fantasy titles have typically been limited to console releases, like the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy of games, along with the upcoming Final Fantasy 15 which will see a release on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 only. Well the good news is that perhaps future Final Fantasy titles, after FF15 presumably, will make its way onto the PC as well. This is according to Square Enix who has expressed their interest in bringing future Final Fantasy titles onto the PC.

If they have the interest, why haven’t they done it? Save for Final Fantasy 11 and Final Fantasy 14, the game’s producer Yoshinori Kitase explained it by saying, “As far as the technology is concerned, it would have been possible for us to make a PC version, but we decided against it for two reasons: we looked at the market situation and we didn’t think it would be a good idea, and also it would have involved lots of complex issues like security. So we decided not to do it this time around.” Kitase also adds, “So in terms of our hope of being able to deliver our games to every single country in the world and to as many gamers as possible, yes, we would definitely be interested in pursuing that route in the future.”
