Final Fantasy VI Fan Mod Features Heroes from Different FF Games: Better than Dissidia?

Before the silly X-2 and the XIII trilogy, the Final Fantasy franchise was known for rebooting itself with each iteration. Each game had a different battle system than the one that came before it and featured different characters as well. This decision lent the series a rich universe and opened our eyes on the possibilities of turn-based combat, but it also meant that our favorite characters would be left out when the next game came along. Which is why I’m very excited about this fan made mod of Final Fantasy VI (Final Fantasy III to the West), which brings together heroes and villains from the different Final Fantasy games.

Spanish is the first language of the unsung hero who is making this mod, so pardon me if I don’t get some of the details right. The modder calls the game Final Fantasy El Origen (Final Fantasy: The Origin), and it will include 14 playable characters from various FF games. It will have its own story and new skills for the characters. The game is based on the SNES version of Final Fantasy VI, which the modder chose because of the wide availability of SNES emulators, meaning a lot of people will be able to play the mod when it’s finished.

AUROOOONNNN Sorry. Aside from the playable heroes, other characters will also make cameos in the game. Check out the gameplay below:

Head to the mod’s website for more pictures and information. The modder also uploaded a trailer on YouTube, which has more information for those who can understand Spanish. I hope the modder succeeds in finishing the game. And I hope he includes a scene where Sabin teaches everyone how to suplex a train.

Final Fantasy VII Finally Gets Remade… In LittleBigPlanet 2

Still waiting for a PS3 port of Final Fantasy VII? Wait some more. Because this is not it. It’s the next best thing though: a remake of the entire game on LittleBigPlanet 2, that includes “all conversations, sound tracks, characters, bosses, and enemies.”

final fantasy vii littlebigplanet 2 remake

The geeky feat was made by one Jamie Colliver, who spent a total of 6 months making the 20 levels needed to remake the PlayStation classic. Jamie even managed to mimic the materia and limit break system. He didn’t have to mimic the costumes though, thanks to the official Final Fantasy VII costume pack. Below is the first of 6 videos showing Colliver playing through the levels.

Bravo. The rest of the videos are on Jamie’s YouTube page. Someone give him an Elgato Game Capture or something so we can see the levels the way they were meant to be seen. Meanwhile those of you who have LBP 2 can look at and play the levels for yourselves. Just look for Jamie’s PSN ID “BRRPPPPPPPPPPPPP” (that’s 13 P’s).

Square Enix Final Fantasy Dating Game is but a prank

I know that it is not April Fool’s Day just yet, but this does not mean we should get on with our lives in a humdrum manner, does it? Square Enix shows the world that they do have a sense of humor, having unveiled an elaborate prank known as the Final Fantasy Dating Game. This particular faux dating game was set in the world of Final Fantasy Type 0, where you can check out a rather elaborate presentation of it in a video that had since been blocked due to copyright grounds. To put it in a nutshell, you play the role of Khalia Chival XXVI (descendant of Khalia Chival VI), who is a young Agito candidate as well as the first ever female student at a magic academy that is teeming with drop dead gorgeous.

Relying on the series’ trademark Active Time Battle (ATB) system in order to run the dating simulation that targets the female audience, you get new “AT” systems which range from “Active Time Talk” to “Active Time Lesson” and, most importantly, “Active Time Kiss.” What do you think of such a title, if there were to be enough fans clamor for a real world release? Will Square Enix relent?

Final Fantasy Dimensions tipped for end of August release

Final Fantasy Dimensions is an upcoming RPG title for the Android-powered platform, where it has been slapped with an end of August release date – at least this is what Siliconera claims. Originally released in episodes for feature phones in Japan, Final Fantasy Dimensions has received a stunning (relatively speaking here) graphical overhaul, and news of news – it is not only available on the Android platform, but iOS-powered devices, too, will be able to get a hold of it this coming August 31st. There is no word on whether the quoted August 31st date will apply to both platforms of just for iOS, and does it have anything to do with the western launch window or otherwise, but one thing’s for sure – soon is the right answer that you are looking for.

Solitary Final Fantasy 2 NES copy goes for $50k on eBay

How does it feel to be one of a kind? I guess you can pose that question to the owner of the Final Fantasy 2 NES cartridge, which is deemed to be the only one of its kind in the US, considering how Square never did release it Stateside all those years ago when 8-bit gaming was all the rage. Just how much is the owner asking for this extremely rare copy of the game? First of all, you will need to have at least $50,000 in your bank account, considering how that is the sticker price that the owner has slapped on the cartridge on eBay. It is a mad, mad world out there, don’t you think so? The seller claims that it is the only one in existence – dare you take up the challenge? Read on about the history of Final Fantasy 2 NES right after the jump if you are a trivia buff. (more…)

OUYA partners with Square Enix, names Final Fantasy III as launch title

We’ve been saying for a while now that a large deal of the success of Kickstarter blockbuster OUYA will hinge on the console’s game selection. News just got a fair bit brighter on that front — particularly for RPG fans. The company announced via its Kickstarter page (as per usual) that it has partnered with Square Enix. The first fruits of that burgeoning relationship will be Final Fantasy III, making the game a launch title for the console. The company is promising that the title will be “updated to exploit OUYA’s high-definition resolution in glorious graphic detail” — and, as is OUYA’s M.O., players will be getting a free demo of the game. Oh, and for those keeping track, the product’s Kickstarter page is currently at a mind-boggling $5,820,345 with eight days to go.

Square Enix brings original Final Fantasy game to Android

You’ve probably played Final Fantasy before on your NES and might have some wonderful memories about it. If you’re getting a little nostalgic now, then an Android device will bring you back in time. Japanese video game developer Square Enix is now bringing the original Final Fantasy game to the Android platform. Square Enix has tweaked the graphics of the time to fit in your Android devices, so expect a slightly modernized version of the game.

Other than the minute changes to its gamplay, the game is still very much retro with the original story and characters included. Unlike Final Fantasy III, the original Final Fantasy game that was first released in Japan in 1987 is significantly cheaper at $6.99. You can get the game via Google Play. The size of the application is 46.39MB. Installation via Google Play requires approximately 240MB of available memory.

Final Fantasy XIV relaunch known as ‘A Realm Reborn’

Square Enix used to be the golden eyed boy of the video game market, but it seems that it might finally have run out of steam where the Final Fantasy series is concerned. Word on the street has it that Final Fantasy XIV will be relaunched, where it will be known as ‘A Realm Reborn’ – cue dramatic music played over an organ here. This will be the second version of Square Enix’s struggling massive multiplayer online title that is slated for a release in due time. This particular game, A Realm Reborn, will continue where its predecessor left off – the MMO known as Final Fantasy XIV Online, where it will arrive on both the Sony PS3 and PC platforms.

Square Enix claims that A Realm Reborn has been “rebuilt from the ground up”, where it will deliver a stunning new world as well as engaging storyline. Hopefully it will live up to its expectations – I do think that this will not be a financial flop as there are more than enough die hard Final Fantasy fans around to prop up the sales figures of this game, but will it be another nail in the series’ coffin, or will it bring back the glory days where Final Fantasy is the golden standard for RPGs? Only time will tell.
