Hulu’s board reportedly looking into selling the service

The news isn’t surprising to anyone who has been following the Hulu business saga, but word has it that Disney and News Corp. are reaching out to potential buyers to see what kind of interest there is out there for acquiring the company. The information comes from two sources who are said to be familiar with the matter, and follows soon after it was announced that Andy Forssell will be serving as acting CEO.

hulu

According to the sources, the company’s board still has not made a decision about whether the popular video streaming service will be sold, or if other steps will be taken instead. As we reported on March 1, Disney and News Corp., which own the majority of the company, can’t agree on how the service should be monetized. That information came from sources who likewise claimed the two were considering selling Hulu.

Reportedly, News Corp. is leaning towards using subscriptions as the primary way of funding the service, such as the already available Hulu Plus monthly subscription that costs $8 USD. This differs from how Disney thinks it should be run, however, with the latter company maintaining that Hulu should utilize an advertisement-based business mode, relying on ads, which are displayed on videos regardless of whether users have a monthly subscription.

Thus far, it is said that both the majority holders have approached Dick Clark Productions, Hollywood Reporter, and Guggenheim Partners LLC, and all of them are said to have shown interest in the possibility. Beyond that, nothing else is known, and nothing official has been stated. When asked, Hulu declined commenting on the rumor.

Google drops Nik plugin collection to $149

Google is now offering the Nik Collection for the super-discounted price of $149, a big drop from the previous $499 price tag. The Collection by Google bundle includes all of the Nik desktop plugins. In addition, the company is also offering some other perks and convenience features to sweeten the deal, including a single-installer for all supported software.

Nik Collection

The Nik Collection by Google is comprised of the following plugins: Viveza 2, Dfine 2.0, HDR Efex Pro 2, Color Efect Pro 4 Complete Edition, Sharpener Pro 3.0, and Silver Efex Pro 2. The plugins can be used with Apple Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements, among others.

The folks over at DPReview spoke to Google’s Product Manager Josh Haftel, who is quoted as having said, “We definitely plan to continue developing and evolving the software. This is our first release and by bringing this under the Google brand, we hope to show our commitment not only to Nik users, but to the photography community at large.” He also stated that the Nik Collection’s only difference over the previous versions is the Google brand and one-to-control-them-all installer.

The deal gets a little sweeter for those who have already previously invested in one or more of the Nik plugins, with Google offering free downloads to previous customers. Those who bought one or more of the plugins within the last half decade can get the Nik Collection for free, while those who bought one or more plugins after February 22, 2013, having spent more than $149, will get a refund for the difference.

Yahoo buys Summly news app for $30m

Yahoo has just purchased the mobile news reader app, Summly, in an attempt to make Yahoo a more mobile-centric service. Sources have told All Things D that Yahoo paid $30 million to buy out the iOS app. They paid 90% in cash, and the other 10% in stock. They have also enlisted Nick D’Aloisio, the 17-year old who developed the app, to work with the company for at least 18 months.

Yahoo buys Summly news app for 30m

Summly is a news reading app that takes a news article and summarizes its main points in only 400 characters. That way users can quickly decide whether or not they want to read the article. While the Summly app was getting popular, Yahoo doesn’t plan on continuing it. The company plans on shutting down the app and using the app’s technology and coding for its own products.

While the Summly app technology would be beneficial for Yahoo’s products, its believed that Yahoo’s real acquisition is Nick D’Aloisio. Sources told All Things D that Yahoo plans on using D’Aloisio to represent its brand in front of both the media and consumers. The company hopes that D’Aloisio’s presence will help make Yahoo seem like a place that “loves both entrepreneurs and mobile experiences, which in turn will presumably attract others like him”.

D’Aloisio is excited about starting his new chapter with Yahoo. Being only 17-years old and having his first entrepreneurial project being bought out for $30 million is a dream come true. He believes that being acquired by Yahoo was a perfect fit for both the company and his app. He stated, “Yahoo has an inspirational goal to make people’s daily routines entertaining and meaningful, and mobile will be a central part of that vision. For us, it’s the perfect fit.” Hopefully D’Aloisio’s venture with Yahoo goes much better than Michael Katz venture with Yahoo.

Google Play gift cards may be available in Canada soon

Whether to give as a gift for the Android fan on your shopping list or to offer as a show of fondness for the geek in your life, Google Play gift cards are a straight-forward way to fund your friends’ and family’s app library – if they’re located in the US or UK, that is. These gift cards have been notoriously unavailable in most locations, but that will be changing for Canadians soon.

Google Play

The gift cards only recently became available in the United Kingdom, previously only being available to Android users in the United States. Canada will soon be added to the list of locations where the cards can be purchased and used, however, according to some signs Canadian users are seeing.

It started off with some tips that users in Canada were starting to see an option for redeeming the Google gift cards in the Play Store. Those tips were further validated when Blank’s Universe, a Canadian website, confirmed that it sees an option for redeeming gift cards, posting a couple screenshots as proof.

This means the back-end service to redeem the cards is being rolled out, though there are currently no retailers in the country offering the gift cards. Google hasn’t made any official announcements about the expansion, but the company will probably have something to say on the matter in the near future – possibly in the next few weeks. In the meantime, you can keep an eye on whether the gift cards become available in your here.

Yahoo considering Dailymotion video service acquisition, says sources

Yahoo is considering acquiring video website Dailymotion, says sources. Such an acquisition would give Yahoo a popular piece of online video real estate, but nothing is guaranteed. The alleged acquisition is still in talks, and nothing may come of it. Dailymotion is owned by France Telecom-Orange, a telecommunications company.

daily motion

According to the sources, Yahoo is looking at buying 75-percent of the video service, which is estimated to be worth about $300 million and would prove to be the largest purchase made under CEO Mayer’s reign. Dailymotion has been through quite a bit in the business world lately, having been acquired by Orange in a two-part deal, the last of which was sealed this past January.

Dailymotion’s Managing Director Roland Hamilton was a tad coy when responding to questions about the acquisition, telling Reuters: “We are unable to confirm, deny, or comment on speculation regarding potential talks between Yahoo and Orange at this time.” Yahoo and Orange, meanwhile, straight out declined commenting.

If the plan goes through, Yahoo will hold the majority of a video company currently ranked as the 12th online video property in the world, with YouTube (obviously) being #1. Reports Reuters, Dailymotion has had approximately 2 billion videos, and averages 116 million unique visitors every month. We’ll keep you updated as more information on the alleged acquisition, so stay tuned!

Adobe rakes in $1.008b of revenue in Q1 2013

Adobe has reported its quarterly earnings for Q1 2013 that ended on March 1. The company has made $1.008 billion during the past three months, exceeding its own expectations of $750 million to $1 billion for the quarter. The company also announced that it has passed 500,000 Creative Cloud paid subscribers, while free users are past the two-million mark.

adobe

Compared to last year, the company’s revenue dropped slightly this quarter compared to Q1 2012, which showed a $1.045 billion revenue during the three months. However, the company’s paid subscriptions to Creative Cloud could boost the company’s financial results in the long term, but it may take a few quarters for that boost to occur.

The company’s user base for Creative Cloud is quickly gaining steam, since the service passed the 1 million user mark back in December, and already that number is over double. It was quite the year for Adobe, with the launch of Creative Cloud and a new version of Creative Suite, dubbed CS6, which includes a ton of software for designers and developers.

As for Adobe’s income for the quarter, operating income chimed in at $98.2 million, and net income was $65.1 million on a GAAP basis. On a non-GAAP basis, operating income was $240.7 million while net income was $177.9 million. Not a bad quarter for the company, even considering its revenue is down just slightly from last year.

Two men hacked Subway to steal gift cards totaling $40,000

Two men were charged for an elaborate hacking scheme. They have been identified as Shahin Abdollahi, whose alias was Sean Holdt, and Jeffrey Thomas Wilkinson. The two men hacked over 13 point-of-sale (POS) computers at a variety of Subways located in Massachusetts, Wyoming, and California. This isn’t the first time Subway’s been hacked. Last September, the franchise’s credit card terminals were hacked at over 150 of its locations. It suffered $10 million in losses and 146,000 accounts were compromised.

Untitled

Abdollahi and Wilkinson went through an elaborate scheme to execute their plans. Abdollahi operated his own POS business, called “POS Doctor”. There he sold POS computers to various Subways, and he preloaded his LogMeIn (remote desktop tool) information into those machines. In order to get a better understanding of how Subway and their POS systems worked, he operated a few of his own Subway franchises in Southern California.

After learning how Subway operates and how they use their POS system, he and Wilkinson then remotely accessed Subway’s POS systems to create fake gift cards totaling up to $40,000. They took the fake gift cards and sold them either on eBay, or Craigslist. According to the reports, Abdollahi’s hacked systems were sold to a variety of other businesses besides Subway as well.

The two men were charged with computer intrusion and wire fraud. It seems like they did an awful lot of scheming and prep work just to create fake gift cards. Abdollahi went through alot of hassle of owning his own POS company and a few Subways just to get this plan into motion. It’s speculated that Subway was just the testing grounds for an even bigger scheme the two had planned.

Facebook study shows friends are a great network for job opportunities

Those of you who are currently unemployed, or are looking to venture onto another job, apparently the best place to start looking is straight from your Facebook’s friends list. Facebook’s Moira Burke and Robert Kraut performed a study to determine whether your friends really are your best network in finding a new job, or if it’s better to network with a group of distant acquaintances.

Facebook study shows friends are a good network for job opportunity 2

Burke and Kraut surveyed about 3,000 Facebook users. They were asked about their stress levels, support from friends/family, and about any major event that had happened in their life. The survey was repeated every month for 3 months, and in that time period, about 169 of the users lost their jobs. After observing the behavior of the 3,000 users, Burke and Kraut were able to discover some common patterns in behavior.

Facebook study shows friends are a good network for job opportunity

Their studies showed that people who talked to other people who they have a strong tie with, like a friend or family member, were 33.2% more likely to find a job within 3 months, and were twice as likely to find a new job compared to the average user. Those who talked to people who they have weak ties with, like a friend’s roommate, or a friend’s family member, were only 6.5% likely to find a new job within 3 months, and were less than half as likely to find a new job compared to the average user.

Facebook study shows friends are a good network for job opportunity 1

Facebook’s study showed that original theories provided by Sociologists were incorrect. Sociologists believed that by talking to “Weak Ties”, you’ll be more likely to find a new job, because those are people who you have nothing in common with. They work at different companies, think differently, and have a network of people you don’t know. They believed that your “Strong Ties” tend to be in the same network of people as you, think similarly as you, and have similar tendencies.

Facebook’s study also showed that Strong Ties are great supporters. They can offer you advice, ease your worries, and do you favors. However, if you have recently lost your job, talking to Strong Ties may actually be detrimental to you. The study showed that users who talked to their friends after losing a job would actually see an increase in their stress levels. Burke says that this is because Strong Ties usually push users to a quicker recovery, offer unhelpful advice, and unintentionally threaten users with their success. So the takeaway from all of this is to use your Strong Ties to find you a new job, and stay away from them if you’ve recently become unemployed.

Keck Telescopes to seek funding on 20th anniversary

The W.M. Keck Observatory, which has the two largest optical and infrared telescopes in the world, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this week. Its twin Keck telescopes have been instrumental to finding exoplanets, exploring the universe, and observing galaxies. They are highly coveted telescopes, with scientists, who are working on research projects, only being able to use the telescope two days out of the entire year.

W.M. Keck Observatory to seek funding on 20th anniversary

However, despite its immense popularity, the W.M. Keck Observatory will be seeing some financial set backs this year, and in anticipation of that, the Keck foundation will be working hard to secure donations from philanthropists. The observatory receives about 1/4th of its money from the U.S. National Science Foundation. However, because of so many federal budget cuts, that number could be reduced immensely.

While the observatory will still have a set $11.5 million from the University of California, and the California Institute of Technology, it still relies on government funding to pull through. Philanthropists usually give about $5 million a year to the Keck Observatory, bringing its finances to roughly about $23 million a year, however it needs philanthropists to give even more this year. The Keck Foundation hopes that since it’s the observatory’s 20th anniversary, people will be more generous with their checkbooks.

The Keck telescopes have done a lot for the field of astronomy, from “co-discovering the methane on Mars to charting the acceleration of the universe.” The telescopes will be facing tough competition within the next decade, so it needs more financing than ever to compete. The observatory plans on putting in a new laser system for its Keck II telescope in 2015, as well as launch a cosmic web imager within the next 5 years.

NVIDIA passed on PS4 due to financial disagreement

When the PlayStation 4 was announced last month, you might have noticed that the console’s processing power was all AMD, with the 8-core Jaguar CPU and Radeon graphics. Since NVIDIA was the chip maker behind the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, what happened with the PS4? It turns out that NVIDIA wasn’t willing to do business with Sony “at the price those guys were willing to pay.”

sony-playstation

Senior Vice President of Content and Technology at NVIDIA Tony Tamasi told GameSpot that the company “came to the conclusion” that they “didn’t want to do the business at the price those guys were willing to pay,” referring to Sony and the amount of money they were willing to dish out to NVIDIA to allow the console maker to use their chips.

AMD ended up getting a deal with Sony to use its chips in the PlayStation 4, and it’s rumored that the next-generation Xbox will also be running AMD components, but it seems NVIDIA isn’t phased by all that. Tamasi says that the company is “building a whole bunch of stuff,” including Project SHIELD that we took a look at during CES back in January.

Overall, NVIDIA looks at the console business as an “opportunity cost.” Essentially, NVIDIA had to weigh the pros and cons of developing their own products versus implementing their technology into other products. In the end, the company decided not to pursue the PS4 and instead focus on their own products.
