Flickr gets major redesign with grid UI, users get 1TB of free storage (video)

A formal celebration of Yahoo’s acquisition of Tumblr wasn’t what the internet outfit had up its sleeve for this evening’s festivities. Instead, the company unveiled an update to Flickr at the NYC event with a host of new features that includes a retooled grid UI built out of images and up to 1TB of free storage for users. Yahoo is saying that the advertised storage space is enough room to stash 537,731 “full-resolution” photos per user. On the desktop side, Photostreams and Sets are cleaned up in proper grid fashion as well and a share button rests up top for easy sharing to Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, email and, of course, Tumblr. Single photos will now be displayed full screen — the size options and white background have been nixed for the extra real estate.

The redesign is also coming to mobile devices on iOS and Android. In fact, the Android update should be available in the Play store as early as tonight. Flickr Pro is no longer available for purchase as many of the features have been tacked on to the free account. However, it appears that current paid subscribers won’t encounter any immediate changes. For those that require more space, there’s a paid “doubler” option that will up the storage limit to 2TB for $500 per year and an ad-free route is priced at $50 for 12 months. Take a look at the “Biggr” photos in the video walk through on the other side of the break.

Yahoo rumors ahead of Monday’s event include $1.1 billion Tumblr buy, Flickr updates

Yahoo rumors ahead of Monday's event include $11 billion Tumblr buy, Flickr updates

Earlier today, Yahoo sent press invites to a “product-related” event in New York City Monday afternoon and there are already two separate rumors about the company’s plans. The first, from Bloomberg, concerns the event specifically and cites a “person familiar with the matter” reporting we’ll hear about new updates for Yahoo’s once-mighty Flickr photo service. The second is from AllThingsD which has upgraded rumors of a Tumblr purchase from possible to possibly imminent, saying the company’s board will meet Sunday to decide whether it will make a $1.1 billion all-cash offer for the site. Since new CEO Marissa Mayer took over Yahoo has made a number of acquisitions with a focus on improving its homepage, content and app offerings including Flickr. That announcement is also penciled in for the 20th, but whatever actually goes down you can be sure we’ll have the details as they’re unveiled around 4PM ET.

Anonymous Hacks North Korean Social Networks As Part Of ‘Operation Free Korea’

Anonymous Hacks North Korean Social Networks As Part Of Operation Free Korea
We’re not sure if you’ve been keeping tabs on world news lately outside of reading about the latest Internet trends, but there’s some serious stuff going on in North Korea these days. Nearly everyone is watching to see what Kim Jong-un will do, while also preparing for the worst-case scenario at the same time. But infamous hacker group Anonymous has taken the initiative to launch a cyber attack at North Korea’s social network accounts.

Not only has Anonymous claim to be responsible for the hacking of North Korea’s Twitter and Flickr account, they’ve also forced North Korean news agency Uriminzokkiri to go offline and claim they have accessed 15,000 usernames and passwords from a university database. Anonymous has used the hacked accounts to relay their “Operation Free Korea” message to call for Kim Jong-un’s resignation as the leader of North Korea to be replaced with a democratic government, as well as to give the people of North Korea uncensored Internet access.

Flickr Rolls Out Hashtag Support For iOS App

Flickr Rolls Out Hashtag Support For iOS App

Ever since Instagram had a falling out with its users 3 months ago, Flickr has been trying its absolute best to acquire those users, first by updating its iOS application to give it a more Instagram-like feel, then by giving away 3 months of premium service. The service is quite comparable to Instagram, although searching for a specific topic can be rather difficult. Today, Flickr will be making it easier to search through its users’ library to images now that its iOS application has hashtag support.

Hashtag support on Flickr is pretty much identical to other social networks where such tags are used: throw in a hashtag in your image’s description and people can search for that image and others like it simply by throwing in the relevant hashtag. Flickr is joining in on the hashtag fun as well by allowing its users to participate in a weekly photo challenge called #FlickrFriday. (more…)

Flickr app gets updated for iOS

If you’re an iPhone user who uses the Flickr app frequently, the app was updated over the weekend. The update for the iOS version of the app brings an important new official feature that a lot of users will be appreciative of. With the new updates the app officially adds hashtag support.

In the latest version of the application, users can add hashtags to the photo titles or descriptions, and can run a search query to find all photos that use that same hashtag term. Some users have been adding hashtags to the photos for a long time, but the latest version the app is the first time Flickr is officially supporting them.

The new version of the app is 2.11.820 and is a 20.5 MB download. The application is available in multiple languages including English, Chinese, French, Spanish, German, and many more. The app is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. However, as many users have complained there is no iPad native version of the application.

The new app is optimized for the iPhone 5. Along with the addition of hashtag support, the new app also features fixes for various bugs some users may have experienced. To celebrate the official support for hashtags, Flickr also notes that each week users of the app can participate in the weekly photo challenge by adding the tag #FlickrFriday to pics.

Incredimail launches for iPad with a photo inbox and built-in browser

Incredimail launches for iPad with a photo inbox and builtin browser

Many of us whose parents discovered the internet in the past decade are all too familiar with Incredimail, mostly through the excessively cute stationery that would come attached to virtually every message. It’s time to shake some of those old preconceptions now that an iPad version is here. The tablet port has stationery for anyone who craves it, but it’s more focused on becoming a one-stop shop for everything associated with communication: it centers on a unified inbox for IMAP-based email accounts (POP3 soon) that shows quick peeks of both mail and any included links. Users won’t have to leave the app at all for a few common non-messaging tasks. There’s both an integrated web browser as well as a photo inbox that currently shows Facebook images, with plans to support Flickr, Instagram and Picasa in the long run. Those on Android devices or the iPhone will have to wait for their eventual turns at Incredimail, but everyone using Apple’s tablet can give it a whirl today, for free — even if they have no intentions of sending messages that could be confused with greeting cards.

Everpix’s Image Analysis Will Find All of Your Cat Photos Automatically (Eventually)

Everpix is an online photo storage system that’s trying very hard to be the Flickr that everybody wants. Its latest crack is at this is an “Explore” feature which uses image analysis to sort all of the photos in your collection into content categories like, “animals”, “city”, and “nature”. It works decently, and it’ll only get smarter over time. More »

Flickr updates iPhone app with friend mentions and more

Flickr has released an update for its iPhone app, bringing with it a handful of new features and some improvements that make the service altogether more fun to use. After updating, users will find that they can now mention friends directly from the app rather than having to use the desktop, in addition to some other improvements. User can grab it now from the App Store.

With the updated app, iPhone users can now create more social interaction with photographs thanks to the ability to mention friends via the app itself. This is simple enough, using the rather conventional mention method of “@person,” which will pull up a list of contacts. From that list, a contact can be selected, and a description or a comment provided. That friend will likewise receive a notification letting them know they’ve been tagged.

Another useful feature that has been added is the ability for a user to download his or her own images from their Flickr account to their iPhone. The downloaded images will be added to the handset’s camera roll, where they can then be uploaded elsewhere or shared in a message. The images are automatically downloaded in their highest resolution; the setting to accomplish this can be found under the “Sharing” menu.

Last but not least is the improvement in speed, which provides substantially faster uploads over the previous version. This is accomplished using two methods: “magic” in photo optimization has been implemented, and users can now add titles and descriptions while the upload process is happening, eliminating the need to wait and making the overall process faster.
